“If It’s Not Raining, We’re Not Training”

So it rained today, and it kind of rained a lot. Most of you woke up, heard the rain, went back to bed, and then woke up again because all the rushing water made you need to pee. Which I’m sure was frustrating, but at least you got a jumpstart on checking your instagram feed for the day. So while you were sitting there (yeah, sitting, who has time to aim at 6:15am?!) chuckling to yourself about the most recent @FuckJerry post, you could have been openly peeing your pants in public like the rest of us. If there’s one silver lining about heavy rain, it’s peeing your pants in public. And if peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis! read more

(Guest blog by Clayton)

Out in SF, we basically leap at any opportunity to let someone else take the reins. Last year we let Jorge take over a Monday workout that yielded an absurd amount of expletives, even by NP standards. Earlier this month we let our favorite resident Jewish friends (Ben and Josh) lead a Hanukah themed workout, and just last week we shirked blog-writing responsibilities by passing the torch to Gil; because why the heck not!? We’ve been writing terrible blogs for over 2.5 years now, and we’re quite sure the SF tribe is sick of hearing us ramble about nothing. So with my trip to NYC coming up (my old home city) I figured I would throw the offer on the table to play substitute leader for the day and give #PAULLEAK and John a well-deserved day off. read more

Originality is Overrated

Here in San Francisco we pride ourselves on originality, and I’m not just talking about at November Project. The other day I was biking through the Castro and I saw a dude who would have otherwise been 100% naked if not for a snap-back hat and something that made his, erm, “manhood”, look like a tiny disco ball. Then I realized I was looking at my reflection in a storefront window. Then I realized it was a store that exclusively sold nipple clamps… so that was interesting, but at least I got all my Christmas shopping done!! read more

Potrero Hill is a residential neighborhood in San Francisco, California. It is known for its views of the San Francisco Bay and city skyline, its close proximity to many destination spots, its sunny weather, and for having two freeways and a Caltrain station. Vermont Street is a north-south street in the Potrero Hill district of San Francisco, one of a series of streets in the Potrero Hill district named after American battleships. Between 20th and 22nd Street, near McKinley Square, the street has seven sharp turns. This has led the street to be dubbed the crookedest in the world in competition with the better-known Lombard Street (Vermont, while steeper than Lombard, has fewer turns). In an episode of Fact or Fiction on the Travel Channel, Jayms Ramirez measured the sinuosity of Lombard and Vermont streets and found that Vermont is indeed more crooked (with a sinuosity of 1.56 versus 1.2 for Lombard Street). Sinuosity, sinuosity index, or sinuosity coefficient of a continuously differentiable curve having at least one inflection point is the ratio of the curvilinear length (along the curve) and the Euclidean distance (straight line) between the end points of the curve. This dimensionless quantity can also be rephrased as the “actual path length” divided by the “shortest path length” of a curve. The value ranges from 1 (case of straight line) to infinity (case of a closed loop, where the shortest path length is zero) or for an infinitely-long actual path. Vermont Street is featured in a chase scene in the Clint Eastwood movie Magnum Force (1973). Clinton “Clint” Eastwood Jr. (born May 31, 1930) is an American actor, film director, producer, musician, and political figure. He rose to international fame with his role as the

Clayton Rides the Struggle Bus

Last night was Clayton’s company’s holiday party, which means he had 8 old fashions, 2 beers, 17 tiny plates of hors devours and a slice and a half of pizza at 1:30 in the morning (JUST NOW REMEMBERED I HAVE ANOTHER SLICE OF PIZZA IN THE FRIDGE! WHOOP!). It also means that despite best efforts, he was only in the bottom quartile in terms of drunkenness… (my company goes HAM). Nothing better than watching a bunch of 23 year old finance bro’s get drunk (drank? drinken?) under the table by a bunch of moms. read more

Return of PBR Wednesday

It was 40 degrees and damp in San Francisco this morning. Also it was PR Wednesday. Also it’s the day before thanksgiving and half of you are gone all week. Consequently we kind of expected only four people to show up this morning (namely, Mark Noviski, Ali Fauci, Jason Levy, and Gil). To our surprise however, we absolutely crushed the 4 person mark! (Including co-leaders)… KUDOS friends for showing up and throwing down despite the brisk and wet conditions. Some brief WISCONSIN notes: read more

Shorts, shorts, shorts shorts shorts short, EVERYBODY!

WISCONSIN NOTES:

> Ryan Moses, a previously regular NP attendee who is now more like a ‘semi-regular/haven’t seen the dude in a few months’ type of attendee, showed up to give away some SWAG. Specifically, Myles Apparel SWAG. Which, until this moment I assumed was spelled “Miles Apparel.” Also, if you don’t know, SWAG means sweet shorts + water bottles + stinky clothes bags + bottle openers (I was going to try and make that an acronym, but gave up); all things I wanted and all things I did not get to keep. Ryan threw down at both the #EARLYGANG and #LATEGANG today. Respect. read more

I think my favorite moments at November Project are those right as after I’ve left the workout. I realize that sounds kind of bad, like, “the best thing about November Project is when November Project is over…” but that’s not what I mean. What I mean is that there’s this really wonderful, pleasant, calming sense of accomplishment I get after we’ve put on a great workout. We’ve just watched the sun come up from the top of a giant hill, seen all our friends at ungodly hours of the morning, put on a great workout, got LOUD and ran FAST, and now I get to appreciate that job well done while whizzing down Folsom street heading home in the early daylight. I get a quiet chance to reflect on the craziness of the last 60 minutes, and I usually just smile to myself and think, what the fuck am I doing, haha (but in the best way possible.) It’s 6:45am, most people in this city haven’t even thought of waking up yet. It’s kind of like a “man, we’re all totally crazy, and I love it” sort of feeling. Anyways, that feeling was pretty strong today. Just an awesome morning. read more

Don’t Sweat It

This morning after #EARLYGANG and before #LATEGANG (read: tween-time), I was laying out the labels for the 6:30 group and this young couple came my way. Normally I wouldn’t pay attention to non np-ers that early in the morning, but they caught my eye because they were both wearing hooded sweatshirts and sweatpants repping their respective alma maters, which were Stanford and Yale. So picture a dude in a full cardinal red sweat suit holding hands with a girl in a full navy blue sweat suit, with STANFORD and YALE written pretty much everywhere. I guess its not that weird, but like, it did kind of seem like they were screaming LOOK HOW SMART WE ARE ALSO WE’RE A COUPLE SMARTEST COUPLE EVER OMG. Which made me immediately resent them because apparently I hate both love and higher education and am filled with spite (I blame McCloskey). But anyways, they walked right by me as I placed the “burpees” label, and Mr. Stanford goes: “aw, honey, want to do burpees?” And Mrs. Mr. Stanford (fmrl Ms. Yale) politely laughs and says, “oh, hehe, no thank you.” So I’m all like, “Come on guys! It’s only 10! You can do it.” And they were just like, “um… no, weird stranger in the park wearing spandex.” (They didn’t say that last part). So I go along my way, questioning my ability to make people workout while not working out myself — which, you know, is my calling, and I place a few more labels, and then round the corner a couple minutes later to lay the final label, and there they are again! Walking right by me as I lay down another label. And she goes “STOP TRYING TO MAKE US WORKOUT.” And I’m like “THEN DON’T WEAR A FULL SWEAT SUIT IN MY PARK! THIS IS MY PARK. MINE!” … read more

Haunted Hills

This morning was pretty, preeettty, preeeettttty good. Not only because a whole bunch of you showed up on a dark street corner at half-past early as all hell, in costume, to crush hills, but also because its the third time I’ve gotten to do that with you. Today marked two years that I’ve been working out with you crazy kids, and two years since I picked up and left New York. I can honestly say that I haven’t looked back. Getting to know you folks over the past two years has been amazing, but whats been even better has been getting to watch you all get to know each other. If you ignore the workouts, the PRs, the calories burned, the sunrises witnessed, and the goals achieved, it’s all been so very very worth it if only for the the connections, friendships and relationships made. The 5 minutes before each workout starts where I get to stand aside and watch you all enjoy each other, and meet each other, is without question the best part of my day. So thank you to everyone for making the last two years so fucking awesome. read more
