Final Wednesday of the month. It’s a pretty easy, predictable setup – PR week and tagging. Traditionally at NP_PHL we do warm up, light, one mile jog. Then we put our racers on the line and they sprint their hearts out, trying to improve on their previous times. We tag shirts and generally get everyone in and out of the workout rather quickly. Today was a slight departure from the norm (read SPICE). When Suzanne is away, Dan will, well, possibly single-handedly bring down November Project Philadelphia…I joke.
Franklin Field Fridays are Open for Business… (PHL)
It is only appropriate that our first Friday morning workout began with a torrential downpour. If it were 60, partly cloudy and comfortable, the world just wouldn’t be right. After much anticipation we finally threw down our first Franklin Field Friday workout and it did not disappoint. Due to slick bleachers, we used the smaller concrete steps and worked in some other modified maneuvers to ensure everyone got a proper burn and earned their weekend…
DECKS ON DECKS ON DECKS (PHL)
We had an intense, sometimes awkward, but always fun, upper deck workout today. We aren’t talking about that frat all-star upper deck move where you can literally ruin a semester, bathroom and friendship simultaneously…we are talking about a sweaty-community-building-lovefest.
With a blanket of fog settling over the city, we kicked it back old school by breaking out 11…yes, 11 decks of cards. We had 11 groups of 11-13 people flipping cards doing push-ups and sit-ups. Two pieces of spice accompanied the workout. An Ace was a long hug with a person whom you’ve never met. Along with the hug, people also learned on another’s names and hometowns. Pulling a Joker sent the team to a centrally located basket to pull a card. Cards contained anything from: stair climbs, ledge jumps, wheel barrows, etc.
Philadelphia…Welcome to the Century Club (PHL)
This morning’s workout was LARGE. We are talking 100 bodies large. That’s right – November Project Philadelphia popped their 100-members-at-one-workout cherry…and it was glorious. It was sweaty, there were hugs and elbow touching, members of the Boston and New York Tribes joined and it was basically one hardworking, fun loving, party.
Riding the Roller Coaster (PHL)
Another exhilarating Wednesday morning is in the books here in Philadelphia. This morning’s workout brought together newbies, NP PHL veterans and one soul from the Boston mothership. Temperatures were just right for some intense hill repeats behind the PMA, or affectionately known as (and recently dubbed by yours truly) “Riding the Roller Coaster.” Members scaled the steep, long incline just off the Schuylkill River Trail for ~25 minutes, did burpees and then rode the Roller Coaster two more times for good measure. Positivity was in the air this AM. Hugs, encouragement, high fives and ass slaps abounded.
Pairs on Stairs Part Deux (PHL)
When Mother Nature gives you that first, oh so comfortably warm Wednesday morning of the year…you wake up, grab life by the balls and meet November Project Philadelphia on the Art Museum Steps. This morning, Mother Nature was kind in throwing us a bone of sorts – and in typical fashion we took that bone and had a lot of fun. Now that I am sufficiently lost in my metaphorical web of grabbing balls and throwing bones, I will stop to explain precisely what went down at the PMA (Philadelphia Museum of Art) this morning…
Reluctantly crouched at the starting line… (PHL)
Just kidding, they weren’t reluctant at all — however that Cake song is epic. Today we raced. Mother nature and her frigid air once again threw us a curve ball, so we stood over the plate, as we always do and fought it off.
Our group consisted of newbies, NP_PHL regulars and even a dude from the Mothership in town for business. We tagged shirts, raced, hugged and generally had a great fucking time. People were fast today…I mean, photography was challenging due to the pace at which these people were racing. We are super proud of every single one of you.
Travel 140 miles for Rocky Relays? Fuck Yeah! (PHL)
You are going to want to read this blog post in its entirety. Not because I’m some sort of wordsmith, but because it contains important, life changing information, naturally. You’ve been warned.
Today was fucking inspiring. Like Al Pacino, Any Given Sunday locker room speech inspiring (though slightly less dramatic and without LL Cool J’s funny little glasses). Crisp air and cold steps did not deter our members from fighting back that urge to hit the snooze button one last time…in fact little could stop our members from getting to the Art Museum. We had a nice showing and a handful of newbies. Some particularly bad ass members of our sister Tribe in DC traveled nearly 140 miles up I-95 to take part in this Wednesday’s workout. Say what? YES, Casey, Matt, Chris & Donna you are fucking awesome. If there was NP Extra Credit, you would get it in spades. Beers on us next go around.
Circle Work at Secret Location (PHL)
And our super secret location was (drum roll)…a random slab of circular asphalt on the banks of the Schuylkill River. Ok, so it wasn’t glamorous but this location offered the perfect place for some interactive, core burning workouts. For those not from these parts, this location is also a common entrance point for one of the city’s major running trails, therefore, recruiting was a natural byproduct of our efforts. Some passerbys were more inquisitive than others, but our #grassrootsgear and deep, guttural (sometimes well placed, other times not) Fuck Yas were a dead giveaway.
