A Peek Under The Hood

November Project Members embrace at Pre-Boston-Marathon workout

In the past few weeks, we’ve made an announcement about adding new sponsors to the global November Project family. We also stated that November Project will start accepting donations as we are now a non-profit organization. Since then we have received requests for more details regarding how we will allocate the funds donated. Hopefully, the following breakdown will help answer those questions: read more

Brooks x November Project = Awesome

Today we’re proud to announce Brooks as the official footwear and apparel sponsor of November Project. Brooks has been woven into the fabric of NP Seattle since the early days. From the CEO down to the newest hires, they celebrate the culture of bettering the world through running and movement. Based on these shared core values, it didn’t take us long to get excited about the potential of our combined reach. The Brooks influence will be multifaceted, including financial support, access to new footwear and apparel, resources for our leadership training and the annual November Project Summit, entries into Brooks-sponsored running events, and activations on a local and global level. We’re ramping up to do some very cool things together and couldn’t be more excited. read more

2018: The Recap (IND)

The man can’t make a bounce short, but he sure can concisely recap the year. Bulleted and galleried below is what 2018 brought to NP Indy and what NP Indy brought to the city:

  • Numbers!: Numbers this year were greater than we’ve ever seen and more sustained than ever before. It was nice seeing such strong interest and commitment to Fridays this year too. Pat on the back to all.
  • Newbies: Related to numbers, Shaw and I have never before had to come up with so many ridiculous and oftentimes uncomfortable or purposely cheesy newbie questions to kick off workouts; Awesome work new faces!
  • Bounces & Workouts: 2018 saw the return of some annual classics (The Gobble is a personal favorite bounce, the lumberjacker is a notable recurring workout, and Wrestlemania was insanely fun) and the introduction of so many ridiculous fresh drops. As a point of pride, we here in the Indy tribe throw out a fresh bounce nearly every workout and oftentimes offer up a never-before-seen workout each and every workout that isn’t called race day.
  • Plog City: We teamed up with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (and Indianapolis Cultural Trail for one) for 4 plogs this summer. That’s where you pick up litter while you jog…and you end up at a brewery for a good time with friends. Along with some being able to give back to the community we love so much and give us some civic pride, the events got us some decent publicity, i.e. our lovely Indy Star article and ridiculous video.
  • Community Presence: Our “official” plogging events weren’t the only way the November Project Indy tribe flexed our “civic pride” muscles. With tribe members connecting their passions and networks, November Project faces and tags could be seen volunteering at countless organizations as events around the city. From Special Olympics to the Indianapolis Symphony, the Wheeler Mission to the White River Clean-up, the NP Indy tribe donated time, money, expertise, manpower, all year round. You all are proof that November Project spans way more than just fitness but is a true community development organization. One thing that each and every person should be proud of. But, not to be forgotten, we are not sure there was a race within a 50 mile radius of Indianapolis that didn’t have a least one NP tag or buff in the race photos. #worldtakeover.
  • Spots: We continued the history tour started in ’17 for a few workouts before tapering off and simply embracing new spots around the city without putting people to sleep pre-workout: Bicentennial Plaza, Lugar Plaza, Cummins Plaza, Tarkington Park-za, IUPUI, new WRSP spots, and plenty more. We’ll continue to highlight new and interesting spots around the city in 2019.
  • Helping Hands: We’re very lucky to have the support of so many in this tribe. Worth personally recognizing though are those who consistently lend their sleep hours and fun hours to help us organize events, take pics, tag tops, and nudge us with reminders about bdays, race deals, socials, etc. Thanks for all you helpers do, and we appreciate your understanding re heightened NP brand standards; Thank you especially to Sarah, Tom, Jaden, Amanda, guest leader yogis and Chelsea and Andy, and Jessie + Ed. The pics are stellar, the tags fresh, the trivia quirky, the home homey, the leads goofy, and the altruistic love for helping others, well that’s purely praiseworthy.
  • Positivity Award: 2018 saw some much deserved recognition of some of the most standout tribe members. We don’t hand this thing out nearly as much as other tribes, and we do that on purpose. To us, it’s a very special award meant to symbolize very special recognition of positive (of course) and inspirational individuals. Congrats again to our 2018 recipients! Looking forward to dishing out some more much deserved love this coming year. Oh and we added the bonus that each recipient gets to decide the next workout theme.
  • Race Day 2.0: 2018 brought some adversity. With our go-to Wednesday spot under repair and our beloved (and be-hated) stairs blocked off, we were forced to amend race day. But as fortune and good planning would have it, this race day 2.0 is incredibly comparable in terms of how much it sucks. Sure the legs aren’t stairs climbing, but the lungs sure are a-puffin’!
  • Guest Blogs: Our introductions to the heartbreaking and heart-filling stories of folks like Teresa Hazel and Tim Howard helped showcase just how much more than a workout NP has become. This Tribe inspires us to keep trying and trying to inspire you back. We’re big fans of the lot of ya and appreciate the courageousness exhibited by those who dare to share with and positively embolden others!
  • Themes/Costumes: We all know this bullet point is essentially reserved for Andy Rusiniak. The man KILLS the costume scene on themed workout days. Keep that fun factor shimmering!
  • No Coast: We hosted the annual No Coast Summit for midwestern tribes this year. How cool was that??!! Thanks for helping highlight Indy for our guests, Tribe. Out of towners are still talking us up!
  • World’s Largest: We don’t quite have the numbers of, say, Boston, but they don’t quite have the workout venue of, say, the INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY. Using the valuable connections of folks like Antwione Haywood and Blake Roebuck, we were able to get into and host a workout at the world’s largest sports venue. Pretty. Darn. Cool. And pairing that with No Coast weekend; I mean, come on. Thanks for the ongoing support and #justshowup attitude, midwest neighbors, especially you Chi-town!
  • Love: This year may be the first on record where NP Indy has played match-maker. We’ve long eyed the crowd looking for sparks and signs, and this year we found ’em! I’m just gonna leave it at that and let you look around and see what you see for yourself; That’ll help distract you from the pain of the workout if nothing else (that, and I don’t want to author a jinx into this blog).
  • Dogs: More dogs this year. Dakota doesn’t like the bounce.
  • Homecoming: This was another super fun time. The week-long fun and fitness fest was a fun and festive fway to welcome fall.
  • Tags: New ones, old ones, clean ones, dirty ones, homecoming ones, cold weather ones, No Coast ones. Brad and Stew make ’em, Tom and I strip ’em. We call the latter “stripping parties”. All are welcome.
  • Tools: Jaden’s camera works much better than our camera. Nevertheless, we’re stoked that Rachel was so kind as to donate her camera to our cause. Between the choice in cameras and a working speaker courtesy of the Tribe last winter, we’ve got the tools of the trade on lock!
  • Departures: New rule for 2019. No one–that is, not a single person (for you smartasses, not a married person either)–is allowed to move. We miss our dear friends who moved on to other pastures, the greenness of them being up for debate.
  • Andrew Peterson: From the personal marathon feat to the ESPN coverage to the mayoral proclamation to the World Games announcement, this man really made our year. Like his aunt said to me, he’s the most famous person I know. I agree. And I’ll add to that, he’s the most humble and deserving famous person I know. We love you Andrew, love what you represent, and love that you and Craig are happy to include us in your story!! This goes for Andrew and all NP Indy Tribesfolks: Keep working hard into and throughout the new year.

Stairs Again?? and Homecoming Week!! (IND)

The Issue: A majority of the stairs of our beloved Indiana War Memorial have been closed for months as they renovate and repair the memorial. While we have a love/hate relationship with those stairs, we’ve longed for that “stair workout” that has become a staple of our Wednesday mornings.

The Solution: When you don’t have a lot of stairs to run a few times, you find the few stairs you have and run those a shit load of times!! So…that’s what we did!! It was hard, it kicked our asses, and it made us question why we ever said we missed them in the first place. But, in the end, it is all of those things that we have come to love about those steps. Today we did “mini stair runs” which was just repeated runs (Starting at 10 or 9 depending on which workout you attended) of each set of stairs on each landing, followed by 3 reps of an exercise on each landing. After a lap, you reduce the amount of stair runs and increase the number of reps. In the end…it’s a lot of stair running, which, let’s be honest, we all needed. read more

    Race Day 2.0, 2.0 (IND)

    July 25, 2018

    RACE DAY

The new race day is back with a vengeance! This puppy is no joke (even for puppies like Hamiltonand Penny). We’re talking 26 minutes on the clock, running laps around the block. During those laps you’re stopping on the platforms (after slapping gold doors) to knock out 20 sit-ups, 20 push-ups, 20 mountain climbers, and 10 burpees.

    We’re bringing back the tracker.

The tracker, found here, was popularized years ago and is used by you to track your monthly race day time (formerly) to see your improvement. It fell by the wayside for about a year, but it’s been resurrected. With the new race day being a set time rather than a set number of reps and laps to complete, the tracker will now be used to track race day distance covered/reps completed rather than time.

Log your new race day numbers in the tracker as follows: Whole number (integer if you ran the block in reverse) for each full lap completed, decimal for each rep completed on an incomplete lap. Examples:

  • In July, Jenny completed 3 full laps and 16 reps of sit-ups. Jenny’s July race day number is 3.16  …[3 full laps + .16 sit-ups]
  • In June, Rashard completed 4 full laps and 7 reps of burpees (so close; you’ll get 5 next month, Rashard!). Rashard’s June race day number is 4.67  …[4 full laps + .20 sit-ups, .20 push-ups, .20 mountain climbers, and .7 burpees]

Big Ole’ Weekend Coming UP! (IND)

    Today:

No #stairsforbreakfast this morning as they were blocked off (and apparently will continue to be as they put a new roof on the War Memorial) so we took it to the streets…well, sidewalks anyway.  A rainbow running pattern (around the block) and then 6 exercise stations each corresponding to a color of the Pride rainbow. A good way to kick off Pride weekend in Indy!!

    Friday’s Motor Speedway Deets:

(Turn 2 of the IMS – the site of our NEXT WORKOUT)

We will be working out in Turn 2 – the Southeast Vista to be exact.  You will want to enter off of 16th street like you are going to the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course. Once you turn in the entrance to the golf course, turn left and park in the spots next to Gate 4.  You should see us with a table and some signs.  Please don’t park right next to the golf course clubhouse as that is for the golfers.

When you get there, you will need to sign the IMS waiver.  We will be stationed in front of the gate so that nobody can enter the gate until they have signed a waiver.  We cannot distribute them ahead of time as they are all individually numbered.

Get there at 6am to get your waiver signed and all that.  The workout will begin PROMPTLY at 6:30am.

    No Coast Deets:

While the actual events are going to remain secret – the plan for the day is set.  The official #nocoast event will begin at noon (12pm) right outside of the Indiana State Museum. If you want to pay to park you can park below the Indiana State Museum (our meeting spot is above the lot) or try to find parking on Washington St. Otherwise, just walk, run, ride, fly, uber, or teleport there. Either way, give yourself plenty of time as downtown will be beaming with pride (seriously though, downtown will be crowded so give yourself time to figure it out).

(See this green? Yea, meet here at NOON on Saturday)

This is a November Project event so assume some activity/sweating will be involved but we won’t be “working out” the entire time.  It won’t be a 4 hour NP workout, it will be fun…but wear running shoes is all I’m saying. Also – bring a phone if you can…I’m sure most people will do that anyway.

The activities will wrap up around 4pm. At which time you will be able to go shower, maybe grab a bite to eat and chill before the after party.

After Party – We have secured a “private” room at Sun King Brewery starting at 6pm!! The “premier” brewery in Indy and the OG when it comes to microbreweries! We assured them we could fill the room, so we HIGHLY encourage anybody and everybody to come to the party.  Can’t make it to #nocoast during the day?  No problem you and all your friends are still invited to party down at Sun King.  There is a small “deli” there but I would advise eating before or after the event as it isn’t exactly a meal. The finger food they do have is Goose the Market, however, which is FIRE. So we highly recommend it if you are feeling a bit peckish.  We have the room from 6pm until about 9pm and will likely have plenty of momentum to continue to explore the Indy scene after that!

We have no official plan yet for those who will be here Friday night, but we will get something together and find a good spot to all rendezvous!! It will likely be downtown so STAY TUNED.

    Finale:

Next Wednesday we will be shooting our annual Yearbook Photos!! We only do this once a year and you don’t want to miss out, so show up.  The theme is simple: November Project – so wear an NP tag and NP gear.  All the photos from all the tribes from around the world will be dropped on June 28th!!

    (#combineready)

    It’s gonna be a great weekend, y’all!! I can’t wait!

    Love NP? Gimme Some Skin!

    Notes From the Editor:

Amy DK  is a longstanding member of November Project Chicago. Beginning her journey just over two years ago, Amy has never missed an opportunity to show how much the entire November Project community means to her. She loves us SO MUCH that she has donated one of her organs to recruit more people. Yes, she is that BAD-ASS! Now it’s our turn to show our gratitude for this wonder-full woman. Amy, you are amy-azing. You are so much more than amy-eer mortal. You literally can’t do amything wrong. Don’t think we have amy more puns? When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s Amyore! Ok, ok, we’re done. With no further ado, Amy take it away!

Where to start, where to start?  I have tried to write this post a handful of times in my head and cried too many [happy and sad] tears in the process of writing.  This tribe brings out all of the feels inside me, so just going to take a deep breath and go for it!

May 27, 2016 – Third Row, 6th from right, my first November Project Workout!

So to start at the beginning: Hey y’all!  For those that do not know me yet, I’m Amy!  For those of you who do know me: yes I may possibly bring back the glitter shirt for pride month, stay tuned.

Any-who, last week was my two year NP-iversary and as many of you may have seen via the social medias I decided to commemorate with a tattoo that speaks to my spirit [read on to see it].  AKA I mixed together my love of spontaneous travel, NP, story-telling and “jumbled-ideas-that-turn-into-fabulous-outcomes”. From the feedback I have received from NP-ers, my new tattoo is “bad-ass”, “amazing” and has gotten a lot of “fuck yeah! s”.  From feedback I have received by non-NP-ers, they told me I need to hold myself to the quote and some have even been intrigued enough to #justshowup after I use my tattoo as a reason to talk about NP and attempt to recruit them.

To back it up just a bit for those who have not seen, last week I began one of my leg sleeve tattoos starting with all eight city tags I have received from various, random world travel, the date of my first workout and my favorite NP bounce:

    I am FAST

    I am FIT

    I am STRONG

    I am THE SHIT

I admittedly do not currently own any shorts, so the potential of seeing said tattoo at a workout near you may take a hot second until I find some quality running shorts!  Also I am in the process of planning my next trip and am hoping to bring back some fresh new city tags which will be added to my new tattoo collection!

All of that being said, I am hoping to share a few bits of myself some of you may not know, so I am not merely known as “the girl with the November Project tattoo”.   I like lists because I am a Virgo and life can get a bit messy without a good list.

I moved to Chicago June 1st 2015, which I never thought I would make it even a year here.  Finding my tribe (aka my family away from my family) has kept me here and made me proud of living in this city.

Six months after I moved to Chicago, my best friend who I lived with all throughout college and then lived down the street from me here in Chicago unexpectedly passed away abroad.  Consequentially six months after this happened I went to my first November Project workout. You all have shown, and keep showing me, that you can’t push others away forever. Instead you need to keep going, find your tribe, hug them close and love them hard. read more
