1 year later Nick Rod wears the Layo pants

In honor of our one year anniversary Dan Layo and I (Nick Rod) decided to finally tell you all that we’ve been conducting a long distance love affair for the better part of this year.  NP_BAL & NP PHILaHILAHEY were birthed a year ago but more importantly, a year ago Dan and I fell deeply, deeply in love. I know this is a lot to handle, but roll with it. In honor of that moment we decided to switch blogs. So I’m writing for Philly…exsqueeze me, baking powder? read more

Notting Hill

Hills have always been a challenge for us to conquer. I know… Notting Hill is actually a Julia Roberts / Hugh Grant film, but it was still a challenge for me to sit through, so the sentiment remains the same. We see something bigger than ourselves, and being the competitive creatures that we inherently are, we must get on top of it. Maybe we do it for the view, maybe it’s to prove that we’re bad asses, but one way or another, we see a hill and it must be beat into submission. read more

Why November Project makes you cooler than people who sleep: Baltimore

This morning stirred up a bunch of emotions for me. And not like, weepy emotions, just the good kind where you start to think about where we all came from, why I think people in neon are cool, why burpees never start to feel good and how come black spray paint seems to be more permanent than white. We may never get answers to these questions so it’s best we leave them alone read more

Hills: “It’s what’s for breakfast”- Baltimore

Hills: An essential part of any breakfast

Hills: Just like your mamma used to make em’

Hills: Still gluten free

Hills: The bottom tier of the food pyramid

Hills: You’ve got some in your moustache

Hills: Bring your bib!

BOOM! NOM NOM NOM NOM

I don’t know what’s going on. All of a sudden 40+ people on a Friday is more regular than a high fiber diet. ALMOST as regular as Sam The Man Pantalones rocking a leotard to every NP workout like nothing could be more normal. We admire the consistency and dedication to making people smile…because you’re an ice-cube of a human if you don’t smile when a grown man runs by you in a leotard. read more

1 year later-Baltimore

Thursday at around 1pm I received a text message from a tall, bald Serbian man named Bojan who may or may not have co-founded November Project. Here is what the text said:

” Happy 1 year my dude.”

Since that text I have been rewinding this past year in my mind, watching 175 people running stairs, doing burpees and hugging each other like they are related. Then I watch 100 people running in the rain, 75 people doing hoisties, 50 people on P.R day, 25 people dressed in ridiculous costumes, 10 people sprinting past the Fed Hill Cannon  until finally I arrive at 3 people standing at the top of the hill asking each other what the hell they were doing there. That day was November 13’th, 2013, the very first day November Project Baltimore was anything more than an idea. To the two people who were standing at the top of that hill with me, know that you mean the world to me. To the hundreds of people that have continued to run those steps and hug like they mean it…I am forever grateful for your willingness to work towards making the world just a little bit better and our city just a little bit happier. read more

The photo contest: BALTIMIZZORE

” I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable, I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.”- Walt Whitman

I have heard that if you quote Whitman before noon it’s the equivalent of 1000 mind burpees. I do mind burpees while sitting in my  office chair to keep my mind’s core sculpted and lean.  I’m quite sure Whitman would have had something badass to say about today’s foggy morning. There is something utterly majestic and mind blowing about watching 150 people emerge from the fog ready to sweat. Gio’s photography from this morning captured it. The tribe is epic…and a little scary. read more

Be a Banana and do some dips- Baltimore

Today was awesome for one really big reason that I am going to attempt to explain right now….RIGHT NOW!

I looked around this morning as faces emerged from the dark corners of Patterson Park  and chuckled to myself. There was a banana, a skeleton, an unbelievably attractive bumble bee with a beard, a tiger, some nerds, a dog in a spiderman costume…all sorts of shit and it made me laugh. Actually, I guess it was more of a giggle. I wasn’t rolling on the floor or anything but I would venture to say I chortled. read more

Welcome to the future- Baltimore

Some days the tribe  completely runs itself and Pat and I are relegated to tagging shirts, getting a mild paint buzz and  trying to decide  if we could beat Ben’s P.R time on a bicycle. We also briefly discussed Christina’s tights and whether we could pull them off. The consensus was no but it wasn’t unanimous. read more

Bmore Don’t Quit- Baltimore

The ghosts of NP
The ghosts of NP

I thought about doing it. I thought about getting on here and giving the old guilt lecture, how the tribe clearly felt guilty for  being about as weatherproof as a tissue paper prom dress. And then BOOM!…40+ people show up to eat hills and we forget about the whole damn thing. Yeah, sometimes it rains and sometimes we sleep in and sometimes we eat too much falafel  and can’t get ourselves out of bed but guess what?! NP don’t quit. Be proud of that. read more
