Sprinting Into 2017 (SF)

I know we are still 2 weeks away from the New Year, but with yesterday’s Christmas Relays marking the end of the 2016 racing season, we figured it’s never too early to start planning for 2017. And since people are always asking us “What’s Next?” I thought I would share some personal goals of mine, as well as goals I have for the tribe. read more

Showing Up For Showing Up

dsc_0303

Most people know by now I have a deep love for running people into the ground. The harder the workout, the happier I am. So in that twisted light, when my husband comes up to me at the end of the workout and says “I think I’m going to throw up” I celebrate. It’s fucked up. But I would totally hold his hair back, so there’s that. read more

Zero Complaint Mondays (SF)

There are a few things every single NP leader across the world really can’t stand:

  • People who tell us our workouts aren’t that hard (run faster…then the workout will be harder)
  • People who tell us our workouts are too hard (ease up…no one is really paying attention anyways)
  • People who just moved here from another NP city and don’t stop bragging about how their old tribe was faster/funnier/bigger/louder/quieter/prettier (every city is different)
  • People who complain..about anything. We roll our eyes at all of it.

Running home from today’s workout I realized that none of these people come to Monday workouts. Mondays are small and sometimes it really feels like we are a secret little club that meets in the dark. People are tired on Monday, but no one really complains about it (except me). When you think about it, it is a special breed of human that gets up before dawn on a Monday. They are the people who look at the upcoming week with a sliver of optimism. They are the ones who enter work with a smile, coffee in hand even though they don’t really need it. They are the ones who set small goals and celebrate when they achieve them. They also set the big goals, but let’s be honest, everyone sets the big goals. It’s the people who know how to relish in the victory of hurdling short obstacles who find greater joy in the day to day. These are the people who make up the core of Monday workouts and they are the people who you absolutely want to start your week with. Because if you surround yourself with them…maybe you will be become one yourself one day. read more

New Study Reveals That With Marriage Comes Stupidity (SF)

Naive? Ignorant? Not sure those fit. Stupid? Blind? Yeah, those words work better for this morning.

For those who missed this morning’s workout, it started as it always does, in a layer of fog and pitch black creepiness. We all stood around whispering, holding hands, introducing ourselves to one another with way too much proximity. As the workout began, the sun did not budge. It slept in this morning. So we continued on, cautiously negotiating the stairs with care not to bust our ass. Since technically I am supposed to take photos and the lighting was shit (for a phone camera) I decided instead to take close ups. read more

For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow (SF)

This morning we gave the positivity award to our favorite frenchman, Jean-Michel Boujon! As he said in his speech, it only took 3 years for him to get recognition for his positivity, so keep your head up and you too may get the PA one day! In all seriousness, JMB has been a pillar of NPSF and the crush-the-workout-yet-laugh-at-everything vibe we have had since day 1. Many people come back each week just to get a JMB hug and joke, two things that instantly start your day on the right foot. read more

Guest Blog From An Anonymous Blogger Named Mairin (SF)

Hi friends. I originally planned to write this post anonymously because sometimes I am a little mouse. But then I changed my mind and decided to own the fact that I’m writing it. So anyways, hi! I’ve been around for a while. If you don’t know me, that’s not totally shocking – I’m quiet. So pale I glow in the dark. Sometimes I bring baked goods to NP. I have a tattoo that was 100% a case a collegiate tattoo envy, but I still like it. Not remotely the point of this post. I’m also a raging, recovering (???) perfectionist. Perhaps that’s more in line with the point. read more

NPSF PBR Wednesday

Due to an unexpectedly busy day, there was a delay in writing the blog post today. Kenny Wong, resident model, stepped up to the plate. Here is his account of how the workout went down this morning:DSC_3674
What a glorious day for NPSF as the new and the old including our ripped leader Zip PR’d. However, the CR by Simon Schmidt is still solid and will probably never be touched. Not even if you played LaCrosse for Ireland or if you’re some self-proclaimed B-list ultramarathoner. If/when the record is broken, NPSF will gladly buy everyone a round of PBRs and throw in North Face shirts. With 100 different variations of burpees at the workouts, we hope that no one hurts their back when they kick their feet back to plank. But if you do, we’re glad you signed the waiver. Someday we’ll have some sort of workshop on proper forms. Now it’s time for one of our own to recount their PR experience this morning “Laura and Paddy told everyone to get down on the ground and do burpees — they all got down on the ground. I refused, I was like I didn’t come here to workout, I came here to socialize so — I’m not getting down on the ground. And then the Levy brother pulled out the camera and put it to my forehead and he said, ‘Get down,’ so I put my hands up, did some burpees and I was like ‘whatever.’
Friday Hills will be at Glen Canyon so get excited, get stoked to shred the gnarrrs on the trail folks.

My Love Letter To Shannon Rowbury (SF)

No one likes to get 4th place, especially in the Olympics. Last night in the women’s 1500 meter, our home girl Shannon Rowbury took home the 4th place finish in one of the most bizarre 1500 finals I’ve ever witnessed. The pedestrian pace the first half mile left the second half of the race to be a dead sprint with limbs flying everywhere. The end result left us with the first Olympic medal awarded to any US woman in the 1500 meter distance…ever. Jenny Simpson is the girl next door, the most genuine and supportive teammate, and was the fastest on the track last night to get the bronze, and that’s all great. How could you not be happy for Jenny? She’s the cutest. read more

Olympic Basketball…Was That Basketball? (SF)

I have rephrased this paragraph a few times to avoid offending people, but I think because I am not calling anyone out specifically I can call you all out as a tribe. You are terrible at basketball.

When the three of us were planning the basketball portion of the workout, we envisioned so many people making shots that there would be a line out the door. I believe one of the questions that came up was “Well, what if someone makes more than 10 shots? Should we make them run a lap?” Now knowing what I know about the SF tribe, I can’t help but laugh incredibly hard at that question. read more

Yoga To The (NP) People – SF

OOOOOHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!

Inspired by our recent support from Lululemon, Jessica Midden led us through another perfectly serene flow to lengthen those tight calves and hamstrings from the SF Marathon yesterday. Thank you once again to Jess who is not only the cutest human you have ever met, but also a really talented teacher. read more
