The Unsung Heroes (SF)

Behind every great leader is an even better listener. Whether it be a friend, a roommate, a friendly roommate, a significant other, or an underpaid bartender, these are the unsung heroes of the November Project world.

Any NP supporter knows that when a leader becomes excited about a workout or an event or a stupid idea involving pinatas, you just have to sit back and listen. Because for the next 24 hours, it is all they will talk about. It is redundant, it is far too energetic, and it borders on psychotic-maybe-they-are-trying-to-relive-kindergarten syndrome. You all are God damn soldiers and I’m here to thank you. read more

Home Run Derby

Breakdown of what you missed this morning:

We played a little game of baseball. With every lap of the bases you complete, you scored a run. Add up the runs, win the game. Simple enough, right? Of course not. Our first mistake was assigning the First Base Coach position to Paddy O’Leary, one of the only people at the workout who has probably never picked up a bat. If you got the signal from Paddy, you were allowed to ‘steal a base’ and skip to the next one. Unfortunately, no one knew when to steal a base because he was making signs like this at them: read more

How My Body Healed When I Took Off My Watch (SF)

Hi. My name is Laura Green and I am addicted to chasing the runner I used to be.

To be clear, I am not chasing the runner I was when I peaked in my running career. I ran some of my fastest times on the track when I was 16 years old so TRUST ME, I don’t have any interest in lacing up my spikes and returning to repeat 400’s, when the chunks of vomit in between reps would get caked on my braces. For the most part, I couldn’t be more pleased that the spankies era is over. read more

A Menagerie for the Whole Family (SF)

A blog by Mark Noviski.

Today I had the pleasure of guest leading my first November Project workout ever. I knew people would be disappointed if I didn’t do something absolutely ridiculous, so I came up with a workout called Menagerie. The objective of the workout was to get in teams of 4 and go hunting for exotic creatures all throughout Fort Mason. Everyone runs to a station, draws a card, and does the designated workout for the number of reps on the card. Then they bring it back to their home base to build up their team’s menagerie. The goal is to get as many full sets (one card of each suit) as possible. A full set has a Komodo Dragon, a Siberian Tiger, a Pink Flamingo, and a Mystical Mermaid. Simple enough, right? read more

The Fabric Of Our Tribe (SF)

Ah, good ole Corona Heights. Never know what you will get up there and today she spit up a half assed sunrise with a sprinkle of orange glow at 6:29 AM. But we didn’t let the sunrise disappointment and blood quenching mosquitos ruin our party. We were going to shower in champagne before work no matter what the scene. Because this is Corona Heights. read more

Once A Year (SF)

I keep rewriting this intro sentence because even after two years I still don’t know how to segue into a Sam story. Due to the cyclical nature of November Project, many people at the workout this morning did not know Sam. Sam; our perma-smile, backwards hat wearing, nut butter enthusiast, who changed the chemistry of a workout by just simply showing up with her bee-bop sidekick, Sasha. The world suffered a huge loss two years ago when Samantha Dweck was killed in a tragic kayaking accident. And while time moves on, the ones who loved her most don’t miss her any less. read more

Under My Umbrella ella ella eh eh eh (SF)

As the start of the workout I made the mistake of thinking “oh! Maybe it won’t rain!” Appropriate for the day, I feel the only response to that is WRONG! WRONG!

As the rain poured down, the tribe trekked into the pitch black presidio to run muddy hills and climb over trees. If there was ever a day we needed those waivers, it was definitely today. On the other side of the hill we had the concrete monsters pounding away, with the Rogowski parents taking home the gold for ALWAYS being camera ready. Unfortunately, the photographer was NEVER ready so when Caity’s mom said “Take a picture of me climbing on his back!…Now take a picture of both of us on Caity’s back!” they came out like this. DSC_1512 read more

“NPSF!…NPSF!…NPFS!…NRSDTACDFED!” (SF)

Listen, Monday’s are really hard. Every Sunday, Paddy, Josh and I start a text thread to plan out the week. 9.98/10 I will be the first one to respond with “I’LL LEAD ANYTHING OTHER THAN MONDAY.” Like a defiant middle schooler, I slide out of bed on Monday mornings, crawl to the bathroom and splash water on my face until I convince myself to not return to bed. Some mornings I am so lazy I sit on the toilet (with the lid down, thank you very much) and wash my face and brush my teeth while sitting down. It’s the most pathetic display of “being a morning person” that you have ever seen. read more

Since When Did Paddy Become The Most Reliable Leader? (SF)

You know 2017 is going to be a weird year when at 6:29 AM Paddy is the only leader at the start of the workout.

This morning both Josh and I missed our alarms, which resulted in a full on panic attack wake up call when I realized it was 6:26 and I was still curled up in bed. Remember in middle school when you missed the bus and your parents would shamefully drive you in to school and scold you the entire way about how they were now going to be late for work? I was determined to get there by 6:29 to avoid the Paddy scolding that would inevitably happen for the rest of my existence. Luckily, it was too dark for people to notice the deep pillow lines on my face and retainer still in my mouth (just kidding, I would never go out in public with that thing) and I seemed to get away with it scot free. But where was Josh? read more

Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, and Mitch (SF)

Ever wonder how Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, and the gang got the nod for the whole round-the-world-trip thing? Ever wonder what reindeer games are? Those who attended today’s NPSF workout found out!

img_7789 After a jolly bounce, teams of eight reindeer-in-training raced around the North Pole AKA Alta Plaza perimeter. They did so via a Reindeer Runs AKA Indian runs sans racism. However, Santa and/or the Grinch (a bit unclear) AKA speedster Katy Kunkle raced around the park to catch reindeer teams and give them gifts of burpees and other exercises. Santa was pretty good at sneaking and catching reindeer, despite being totally covered in Christmas lights (watching brightly-lit Katy creep in the trees was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. You rock, Katy). The reindeer teams who successfully completed the most Reindeer Run laps while evading Santa were rewarded with re-re-re-gifted Hawaiian chocolates, straight from the North Pole.

A big #earlygang also crushed a musical workout and might have Reliant K and Weezer Christmas songs stuck in their head all day. Sorry, gang! Many thanks to you wonderful folks for embracing this silly workout, and sorry for forgetting to take pictures until about 7:09. And as always, big thanks to leadership for all you do Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and in-between. Y’all are good people! Friday hills are at the Lyon St. steps. Meet at the top, at Broadway and Lyon. Happy Holidays, family! 20161221_071321
