A Culture Shift Reminder

There’s this joke that has been following me around for 7 years which goes something like this: “Have you met Laura? She leads (led) the November Project San Francisco tribe and helps Brogan and Bojan continue to grow this thing. Oh, and she hates November Project.”

I’ve tried to embrace the role of the Chief Cynical Officer, who usually comes up with reasons things won’t work before I see the possibility that they might. Blame it on the fact that I grew up in NY, or that I have been surrounded by men my entire life (brothers and friends) who have hardened me up. On my way to becoming a loud, sarcastic human, I have also learned how to wear an invisible protective barrier, something that even I forget I am wearing most of the time.

5 Of The Best Years (SF)

ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

How am I supposed to sum up 5 years of memories in a blog post?

(Goes to get coffee. Returns to computer)

I already cried in front of you once today, so do I have to get all melodramatic again?

(Goes to get donuts. Returns to computer. Eats said donuts while staring at blank screen)

Okay, this is what I am going to do. Instead of talking about the power of community (a word that gets used too often in my opinion, much like adventure. Getting married is not an adventure, people. Domestic partnership is arguably the exact opposite of adventurous. Going to Dolores Park after nightfall is exponentially more adventurous than settling down with your partner. Okay, that’s a blog post I have been meaning to write but will put off for another day…) I will write about a few of my favorite memories with the NPSF tribe, especially the royal fuck ups we have had along the way. Trust me, there were plenty. It’s kind of like when you get into your 20’s and your parents finally come clean with all the times they accidentally dropped you in the pool, or left you in the car, or forgot to pick you up from school, and we all laugh about it now. Like those, these are all the times we almost killed you.

The Time Clayton And I Started Two Different Workouts:

One Friday morning we decided to run hills at Lafayette Park. The first pin dropped was at the southeast corner of the park, but I later changed my mind and wanted to meet in the middle of the park. Thinking I communicated this well to Dan (I didn’t) I headed to Lafayette that morning with my speaker bag and headlamp. Right at 6:30 I was a little surprised that there were only about 20 people ready to tackle hills. Little did I know, about 200 meters away Dan had collected his own small group and was wondering the same thing. So we did what we thought was right…we started the workout. Each group did their own newbie intro, warm up, bounce, and workout description, all while wondering where the other leader was. Like clockwork, both groups started running hill repeats at 6:35 AM just to bump into the other crew on the path. I believe Clayton and I had the same reaction of “I thought you slept in! Why did you start over there? I am right! You are wrong!” Okay maybe that last part is made up because we honestly just laughed it off and continued on with the hot mess of a hill workout. Never again did I post two different pins…

The “We Missed You” Post That Got National Backlash:

The We Missed You post is a Boston original, one often filled with sarcasm, dry humor, and a touch of insult. When I started writing these, I really went hard. I came from a family who tells one other they look a “rough” first thing in the morning without thinking twice, so this was second nature to me. When I wrote a rather harsh We Missed You for my dear friend Kinley, her and I both had a good laugh about it. But then I started getting messages…

Telling me I am an awful person for writing this. Telling me they wanted to come to NP but then changed their mind because I seem mean. The joke was completely lost on anyone outside the NP world (and probably some in it) and I realized that I had to soften or people would start dropping like flies. So yes, it taught me a lesson, but I still find the post funny as hell.

“Each member of the tribe brings something different to the group. They all add their own personal flare to make this such a diverse, interesting collection of humans. But you? Eh. You bring very little to the table.” I’m such a bitch.

The Time We Made Katy Kunkle Walk Down The Aisle Escorted By Kenny Wong And Gil

One of my favorite parts of NP are the stunts you can pull along the way, one little thing to make the workout memorable, even if the workout isn’t too memorable itself. Katy Kunkle is the definition of sweet. She is soft spoken, kind, and fast as hell. When we heard she was leaving for a few weeks to go get married in Oregon, we knew we had to do something to send her off. So, naturally, we had a wedding for her. It was complete with a wedding hat (is that a thing??), veil, and insane fake ring, she walked down the aisle as we tossed rice at her face. I knew it would make her uncomfortable (which always makes me laugh) but it got even more awkward when Kenny Wong and Gil insisted on being the ones to “give her away.” It was hard to watch. I loved every second. Mission accomplished.

The Very First Chaos Lap Gone Wrong

Very early on, Clayton came up with an idea to add into any workout where things needed to “shake up.” If at any moment throughout the workout either Dan or I screamed “CHAOS LAAAAAAP!!” you stopped what you were doing, ran out of Alamo Square, ran a full lap around the park and entered the way you left. The premise of this concept emerged after the police drove through one workout and gave us a friendly yet stern warning about our crew. So the first time we tried it out was mid-winter in the pitch black of Alamo. Clayton screamed out “CHAOS LAAAAP!” and people took off sprinting around trees, through bushes and over benches to exit the park. They adopted our vision flawlessly. But a few minutes later, as people began to trickle back in from the run, we noticed a handful of people missing. Minutes passed. Then many minutes. Then the workout was ending and we sent people out on a search. Since it was so dark, and newbies unfamiliar with the park, a few people had gotten turned around and were lost trying to make their way back to the center. Clayton and I are still laughing. Chaos Lap gone wrong.

The Day Zumba Changed My Life

After making such a fuss over NPSF always have hard workouts and always challenging the tribe, hosting a zumba workout was a little hard for me to accept. Okay fine, we will do it on a Monday so we don’t lose street cred. And then you fuckers all showed up…in your neon spandex…ready to dance. Watching Paddy shake his little booty in those floral spandex turned my black heart to mush. I could have have watched the videos of the tribe (okay, mostly just Paddy) dancing for hours on end, led by the fearless Louise and Weston, who instructed with such enthusiasm and swagger. Zumba 2.0 should happen soon. Make sure Paddy is in the front row.

The Time(s) You All Ran Into Oncoming Traffic

This is probably the thing I am most concerned about as I step down. You all blindly and willingly run into oncoming traffic if I am not there to stop you. Not sure if it’s the morning hours, the dark streets, or the feeling of invincibility, but the amount of times you have all run into the street without looking both ways is baffling. To go along with this we have box jumps landing on shins, hands in broken glass, sprained ankles on level ground, ambulances for legit injuries while the leaders are away (still sorry about that Lil!), broken toes, jammed fingers, balls thrown directly at people’s faces, missed stairs with inevitable falls, and countless other injuries. Hey tribe! Pull it together! Also, sign the waiver.

I could rattle off so many more fuck ups but I would rather go out with a shred of respect still intact.

SF, you have been my home for many years and will always be my first true love. November Project has been my most prideful venture and something I will continue to fall back on for support, love, insulting banter, and a hearty laugh. It is an ever evolving movement led by all of you, the tribes. Just know that wherever life leads you, it will always be there for you to return to when you need it most.

Like I said this morning, it has been a damn privilege leading with Clayton, Paddy, and Zip. Getting up three times a week for almost 5 years is a whole lot easier when you are co-leading with two of your best friends.

But don’t give us more credit than we deserve, as this tribe and this whole NP movement is incredible because of all of YOU. So don’t stop. Invite new friends to workouts, approach the newbies quietly standing on the outside of the circle, and keep chugging forward because this crazy workout “community” positively changes the social climates of cities and we could all use some more positivity. Be kind to one another, continue to make fun of Paddy daily, and get out there and adventure with this community. You are all amazing. Peace out. read more

I Have 5 Workouts Left- Can I See Your Face? (SF)

So it’s been nearly 5 years of NPSF and I now have 5 workouts left before I head east. Time sure does fly when you are having the time of your life. I’ll save the sappy blog post for my last day, but for now I ask you this…can I please see you before I leave?

Over the last 5 years, NPSF has been a revolving door of fantastic humans from all ends of the earth, some who I have gotten to know better than others. You may have only been to a few workouts, or maybe you have been to every Wednesday since Alamo Square (JMB), it honestly doesn’t matter to me. I want to see ALL OF YOU. The last few weeks have been dark and wet, a recipe for San Franciscan’s to surely sleep in late and start work at noon. I get it, this city has the most flexible work schedule in the whole damn country (except for San Diego, where they just simply don’t work). But I am asking, pleading, and borderline begging (please girl, I don’t beg) you to make it out to one of the next 5 workouts, or better yet, all of them! Bonus points if I haven’t seen you in years and want to just jump into one last workout. It would mean more to me than any of you realize.

Come give me a hug!

Laura

P.S. We’ve got a tight score coming into the last Friday! 246 Team Zip (yellow). 218 Team Paddy (blue). 243 Team Ali (red).

The 5 Year Recruits (SF)

“When is that workout group again? The one Laura leads? Oh, 6:30 on Wednesdays. I’ll get there soon.”

This is the conversation Connor has been having with his friends Peter, Andrew and Mike for 5 years. They would see each other at work, at bars, on bike rides, and everywhere in between, but never at Alta Plaza at 6:30 on Wednesdays. Connor would give up but then one of them would ask, “Oh, when is that workout again? Oh, 4 steps from my apartment? Right, right. I’ll come soon! I promise!” This has gone on for years. YEARS. A few months ago when it came up in conversation I remember saying “It’s okay Andrew, I know you’re never coming.”

You see, I have given up on my friends. For most of us, the ones closest to us are the ones who couldn’t be less interested in this morning workout group we go to. Which is fine. It’s great actually. It creates a brand new community of fresh faces and helps us create subdivisions of our life: work friends; NP friends; OG friends; black out drinking friends etc. etc.  So when OG friends came out for the very first NP workouts to “support their friend” and never showed up again, I didn’t take it personally, because I was creating a new space with new faces.

So when this morning I looked into the crowd and there were Connor’s 5 year recruits, I was shocked. WILL WE GET THEM TO ANOTHER WORKOUT?! Only time will tell. But I will say, our NP dog contingent is looking awfully good these days. Let’s just keep recruiting cute dogs? Wonderful.

P.S. Turns out you truly can shoot your eye out with a nerf gun. Dear Alice, I am SO SORRY I almost blinded you for life this morning. I will not be randomly shooting those things off in the future. Turns out the biathlon is not in my future. Or maybe it is?

Friday:  Hills in Chinatown for Year of the Dog New Year’s Celebration. Perfect time to recruit dogs! 6:28 AM at California and Grant https://goo.gl/maps/ANjtv451TFC2

Three Cheers For Haute Toddy! (SF)

A few years back our friend Orrin came up to visit from the city of Angels and said he was here to see his friend Tod and convince him to come to NP. It took a little while, but Tod started coming to the 5:30 crew when Clayton was head honcho. Much like Jide, I was so intimidated to first approach Tod because of how beautiful he is. Am I not allowed to say that because I’m married? Fuck it. Jide and Tod are my first and truest NP crushes.* The one’s that got away, I suppose (if only you could hear how loud I am laughing at this right now).

Anyways, over the years Tod has become such an integral part of the mushy gushy part of this tribe that it is a devastating blow to lose him to the pacific northwest. He is the guy always working his ass off from start to end,  greets you with the most endearing smile this side of the Mississippi, and genuinely makes up what this whole November Project thing is all about. Simply put, he’s both badass and kind.

So DJ Haute Toddy, know that you will be dearly missed in San Francisco (especially during Pride week when we could really use your high kicks at the front of the parade). Your dance moves and energy are always welcome back in the city by the bay!

XOXO,

NPSF

*This is Laura writing, by the way. Although Jide and Tod might be Zip and Paddy’s NP crushes as well. I just have never asked them.

GFY, Jorge! (SF)

The fall of 2013 will always be the highlight of my SF days. The small but mighty San Francisco tribe was now growing steadily, with word getting out and friendships blossoming at each Alamo Square workout. When you look back at group photos from that year, you can visibly see the progression of shy, stiff poses to full embraces and mid laugh captures. At that time in NPSF’s short life, we were newborns. Every week we learned something new, experienced something novel, and grew a little bit closer. That original crew will always be my safety net, as we grew up together, navigating this adult world with each other’s enthusiastic support.

Jorge Moreno threw himself 100% into the NP scene, committing himself to every single activity, both physical and social. For example, the theme of the Halloween workout was “Animal Kingdom” and he rolled up in an all black outfit and before the workout started, managed to duck tape stripes around his entire body to look like a zebra. He was the VERY FIRST positivity award recipient, something that we didn’t even do the first 5 months because I thought it was too “campy.” But when he later told me how much the award meant to him and that he kept it on his desk at work, I realized campy is sometimes a great thing.

He was one of the OG Bike Gang members, taking the Bart over in the early wee hours and starting the workout before 6 just to maximize his pre work hours. And let’s not forget, he was also the co-host of Jorge and Zip’s Bike Gang reports, which were selfie video recordings that were 10 minutes too long and full of superlatives such as the “Hips Don’t Lie” award. I never watched them.

And now, Jorge is leaving us for the expansive (44th) state of Wyoming to pursue new career opportunities in the great outdoors. The guy who didn’t own one piece of camping equipment when he moved here is now leading large groups of humans through the mountains. Shit is WILD.

I definitely rambled my way through this blog post, but the point is this: The return (and departure) of Jorge from SF, and the beginnings of East Bay Fitness, \  brings me back to a time of unbridled joy, excitement and enthusiasm from the 2013-14 tribe. And I want it back. So Jorge, have a brilliant time in Wyoming, but we will keep coming back to NPSF with more energy, spirit and gusto in the coming weeks than we ever had before. Time to turn to dial back up! GFY JORGE!

Think The Crazy Schedule Is Over? We Are Just Getting Started (SF)

Sad the Endurance Challenge weekend is over? There’s no time to be sad! We have too much to plan! Check out the schedule below and get ready for a fun December.

Let’s Get A Bounce, One Bounce, Going (SF)

So it’s been 4 and a half years since we started NPSF. After all this time, coming up with new workouts for Monday and Wednesday mornings can be quite the creative struggle. I look through old blogs, talk to other NP leaders, and scour my brain desperately for a new morsel of intelligence (I take fish oil for this purpose) just to come up with a new idea for the tribe. But when I am really at a loss, I resort to my fool proof plan…going to Party City.

At Party City, there is aisle after aisle of candy (all color coded), balloons, props, hats, and workout inspiration around every corner. Remember that pinata? Party City. Homerun derby? Party City. The hobby horse? Well, that was the pinata head on the baseball bat but still…Party City. There is also the added treat of handfuls of candy while you are waiting in line, so I stuff my pockets for my hourly sugar refuel.

This morning, team Red and team Green raced for guts, glory, and colorful little chocolate balls to add to their teams bowl. In the end, Team Green won (heh, I didn’t realize that before, but happy team Green won…get it? Laura Green? Anyways..) with an almost 30 point victory, which gave them control over Team Red’s burnout. In the end, everyone got a blistering workout in, and Jide ate 42 chocolate balls to warm himself up for breakfast.

Coming Up:

Friday Hills: Mount Davidson, 6:26 AM

Next Week Hills: Hawk Hill, 6: 25 AM

#NPGIVESBACK (SF)

Proud. Proud. Proud.

I know the last few days of smoke and ash have kept most of us inside and off our fitness ‘A’ game, but I am immensely grateful you all gathered donations and headed out the door this morning anyways. I was concerned the numbers would be low today due to the continued air pollution, but the generosity of those who did show up was astounding. You came with bags, boxes, carloads and bike loads, full of new clothing and bedding, medications, first aid materials, and food for humans AND pets. The world has been a dark and scary place the past month, but NP restores my faith in the goodness of humans each and every week. So thank you x 2 million. Just 2 though, because more than 2 million would be ridiculous.

Announcements:

  • I really thought the workout today would be pretty chill and I think I burned everyone out in the first 15 minutes. My bad.
  • Virgin Sport: There are 20 free bibs offered to anyone who is willing to volunteer from 10 AM-11 AM on Saturday morning. If you put your name on the doc here you will sign up for either the Style Mile or the Vertical Mile for free, which go off in the 9 oclock hour before you volunteer. **Keep an eye on social media, as the air quality might determine if this race will carry on as planned
  • Friday hills: Chinatown, unless the air quality is poor and Paddy wants to go south. Keep an eye on facebook tomorrow afternoon
  • Special shout out to Mitch Westwood for filling his car up and driving up to Marin with me this morning to drop off all the goods! And to all the people who offered their vehicles! Lifesavers

    I’m With Her…And Her…And Her (SF)

Sorry fellas, this morning was all about the ladies as they took home all the gold, glory and…helmets. From the sound of the gun, Kadala was on a mission to take down the women’s course record on the PR Wednesday course. Not to let her get away too easy, Mitch stayed hot on her heels, flying through burpees like he was 100 pounds lighter and nimble as a kitten. The two battled it out with others close behind but Krysten emerged victorious, winning the race outright as well as lowering the CR from 20:40 (Emma McCune) to 20:04. What. The. Fuck.

    That’s really fast.

After everyone settled into their sweat soaked clothing on the front stairs, Raena passed on the O’Meara Helmet to the always deserving Ali Fauci for, well, being Ali Fauci. Ali is the most consistent human on the NP globe and comes to both 5:30 and 6:30 each week, Mondays AND Wednesdays. She buys the tribe donuts (with Gil) on Mondays. She is never standing on the side, always going hard, never complaining. Can you tell how much we love Ali?

And last, but certainly not least, we say a tearful goodbye to our friend Cassi who is moving to DC! Since they have given us 10 tribe members over the last few months, I suppose we can send you their way :(. Try and stay warm, California girl! We will miss you!

Friday hills: Battery to Bluffs trail, 6:25 AM. We are going to start RIGHT on time and knock out 40 minutes of trails so get there right on time! https://goo.gl/maps/EwTVMCWYUa32
