I Don’t Strava Often…(SF)

I’m not a big Strava user. Unlike Mr. O’Leary I don’t have a cult following in the app (disclaimer: this is 100% an assumption with no research done). I prefer to just get outside and run. I don’t want to know that I was faster today or slower today. Guessing slower anyway. I don’t need CRs when I can just pick someone out in front of me and try to race ahead of them. read more

What Are We? Mobile! Agile! Hostile!

I seriously love Remember the Titans. Such a good movie. When I was asked to join the SF leadership all I could think to myself was “cannot replace a Laura McCloskey.”

But just like the Titans played on, so shall we. And man, today was incredible! First of all, I could have gone home happy after we nailed the Remember the Titans bounce. Mitch was ready to hit something afterwards. Thankfully we let him loose on a killer workout and saved some poor guy from a crushing hit from the Left Sideeee (Strong Side!). read more

The Best Workout You Never Had

DSC_2349

This morning it didn’t rain. And it was the best workout of all time. Oh, you weren’t there? That’s really too bad. Let me tell you how great it was. At the end we’ll compare the workout’s greatness to your cozy bed. Spoiler alert: NP > Bed every time.

Let’s start at the beginning. We showed up. We #JustShow(ed)Up. Step 1 to making a great day. We made some new friends. Alex, a newbie from Emeryville and friend of Malcolm (from the Mothership in Boston), showed up and crushed it. Patrick, a newbie also from the East Bay quietly showed up late, pretended it was an accident, and then did his first ever hoistees like a bawse. Anand visited us from DC and Patrick Canfield showed up to do his backbends. How do you even do those Patrick?? read more

You Look Amazing Today

_DSC9476

Today was one of those days where my alarm went off and I had to double check that I actually had to get out of bed. I was really comfortable after conking out last night following a boozy game of Settlers of Catan. That is a great game by the way. I never knew I wanted sheep so badly.

This morning we crushed a trail right under the Golden Gate Bridge’s nose. You wouldn’t know the bridge was there by today’s photos though since Karl the Fog was all up in our business. Objectively, if you were not with us today, you might say the weather was shitty or not that nice. But today I thought it was so beautiful out. You guys (almost!) nailed the Remember the Titans bounce first off. We’re getting there. Then there was just so much positivity. High fives were flying, Weston was shirtless (standard), and people were running hard. read more

The Weirdest Safari Ever (Tommy’s 4th Bday)

tommy bday

Hello and welcome. Welcome to the NPSF Golden Gate Park Jungle Safari ride. Please keep your arms, legs, and running accessories inside the vehicle at all times. Make sure to give our friendly bus driver Braden a funny stare or awkward hug on your way in. I’m your dinosaur tour guide, Mr. Zip. I know, I have a big head and little arms, I get it all the time. read more

The Tribe Plays Tic Tac Toe

DSC_2267

Everyone loves games. I especially love them. Have you ever played Noughts and Crosses? No? Wrong, you did this morning! Man, I wish I would have looked up Tic Tac Toe on Wikipedia pre workout. I could have been making all kinds of Irish jokes about that.

Other things I found when I Wikipediaed (new verb) Tic Tac Toe:
-The setup time is listed as “minimal.” Clearly whoever wrote this has never chalked 50 tic tac toe boards.
-The skills required are “strategy, tactics,” and my personal favorite, “observation.”
-An early variant of the game was played in the Roman Empire around the first century BC.
-Clayton’s grandfather was one of the pioneers of the game in the US. Talk about a legend. read more

#RippedByZip Vol. 1 (And lots of announcements!)

Photo Feb 10, 6 55 07 AM

A lot of people reached out to me after I became a leader. Here are a couple of common things I heard: “Zip, will we be able to get strong now?” “Does this mean I don’t have to watch Paddy and Dan do pushups?” “Can we become the most jacked tribe?” The answer is yes, obviously. Sure Brogan has a twitter account for his abs, but who doesn’t? This is a mantle I’m willing to carry. To get the SF tribe ripped.  Here’s how #RippedByZip was born. read more

Super Bowl Friday

_DSC8839

This morning at NPSF was our opportunity to get further into the Super Bowl spirit. San Francisco has been on fire this week. Celebrity sightings and traffic jams and uber surge prices out of control. It’s the best!

The tribe got into real football mode this morning though. Braden wore his old high school jersey, John Flinn brought a football that got tossed around, and people did burpees like they were trying out for the NFL Combine. Man, I wish burpees was a part of the NFL combine. Just imagine those 350 lbs linemen doing them. No videos I could find. Believe me, I searched. read more

We Still Miss You Sam

Today’s post is written by Sasha Teninty. AKA Sasha Fierce AKA I’m Faster Than You. Written on the one year anniversary of Sam Dweck’s passing (and after the Monday workout). Read on.

I was nervous about this workout. It felt like it needed to be perfect in some way, encompassing everything that Sam Dweck meant to our tribe. A workout that would kick your butt with a wink or slap on the ass. A tribute to the girl who lit up when describing her time farming, pumpkin granola, and vegetable temporary tattoos. And so Laura and I found ourselves in Safeway at 5:30 AM, dazed and paralyzed over the unexpected selection of carrots that the store offered. Our under-caffeinated brains were overwhelmed by the sheer array that carrot market offered, so we grabbed six bags of baby carrots and dashed to the register.

The workout ended up being simple: grab a partner, dodge the local skunk slinking around, do some exercises, and collect a carrot from the heap whenever you completed a lap.
There were backwards hats, veggie tats, and big smiles that Sam would’ve appreciated. She had an infectious smile that lit up dark morning workouts, gave hugs that made everyone feel like an old friend, and provided encouragement that propelled her tribe through burpees.

Sam and I shared countless commutes to NP. She liked mellow, quiet music while we drove… she was alert and awake, but it took a bit of time for her trademark enthusiasm and bubbly nature to kick in. By the time we arrived at NP, she was in the zone –  radiant smile, bouncing curls under a backwards hat, huge hugs and goofiness. Once she told me that she always tries to be conscious of new people… she remembered being intimidated by the crew when she first started attending NP and how it seemed that everyone knew each other so well. A hug, someone remembering you, or sticking by your side in the sea of unfamiliar faces was significant. She was always aware of this and wanted to pay it forward to the new people.
I think that the word “community” is thrown around all the time and is a buzz word, but I can’t think of anything that encompasses it as well as NP(SF).

Sam possessed a genuine enthusiasm for life and the NP community. I remember her calling me the day after the bike progressive. I was parked, sitting in my car. We talked on the phone or texted most days, but this memory stands out because she was so happy. While up to this point Sam had enjoyed SF, she was still slightly uneasy in the city. Was she doing the right thing? She missed her friends and family on the east coast, didn’t have a full-time job, and was feeling a bit out of place. And then she found NP and something clicked. On this phone call she said “I think I have friends now”. At the time, I was thinking “Duh you’re amazing why wouldn’t you have all the friends?!”, but I didn’t understand the power of NP until I experienced it firsthand.
Along with many others, Sam’s death taught me that the tribe was family. We can count on each other, and we come together to provide a foundation that has been a haven for many. The tribe is a beacon of resiliency to me, and I will forever be grateful for the community, family, and friends that NPSF was to Sam.

Thank you Murph, Michelle Obama, America

MichelleObama_PushUps_Reuters_380

Today we did a version of the Murph. The workout is named after Michael P. Murphy, a US Navy Seal who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service.  A stud and an American hero. The workout was challenging but the tribe was up for it.

We ran a mile (close to a full one at least) then did 20 sets of 5 burpees, 10 leg lifts, and 15 body weight squats. Then ran another mile. The tribe is most likely sore. But also, look how happy! read more
