Oh lady luck, how you hated some of us this morning. For some of you lucky yahoos, you pulled a Red 4, then a Black 6, then a Red 2, and so on and so forth through a morning of single digit bliss. The rest of us…well…I have one word: Hoistie. Yes, Hoistie. It all happens in slow motion. Like a scene out of horror movie. You reach the top, Rocky style, Eye of the Tiger blaring in your ears…or maybe it was just the beat of your heart, about to burst out of your chest. You stumble over to one of the three fortune teller stacks of cards. Breathless, you bend down amongst the sea of lucky bastards doing push ups and leg drops. Slowly, deliberately you pick a card, flipping with caution only to discover the smirk of that damn Queen of hearts. Hoisties. Again. You rise in defeat, looking for a partner to share in your misery. No one makes eye contact. Alone in a sea of people, you look, and look, and then catch the eye of the unsuspecting tribesman who has just come up the mountain of stairs, in the midst of their own Rocky themed cardiac arrest. Done. Partner, found. You hoistie together, your legs burn together, you muster the “hoistie” with as much umph as you can. And for that brief moment between hoistie 9 and 10, you’re the luckiest person on those stairs. No one else’s legs burn like yours and you’re still standing. That is, until you go home and your legs give way on the stairs in your apartment…and you curse that damn Queen of hearts the whole way down.
Regionally Weatherproof…fuck yeah!
Winter has arrived in San Diego. The beanies are out. The spandex and long sleeves have been pulled from our closets… and may I be the 50th person today, to say: Some of our tribespeople look remarkably fashionable in their winter attire, well done! Now, our 48 degrees this morning (yes, it was FORTY-EIGHT degrees when I left my house), may not hold an icicle to our Canadian friends up north, or our Denver brosephs to the East…but for people who live in a constant 70+ degrees during the daylight hours…fuck it was chilly this morning!…oh…wait…yup, there they are…Ok. Now that I’ve officially heard the “scoffs” echoing in from around the globe, lets get to the real reason you’re sitting at your desk, sitting at the kitchen table, in your bathtub and at that coffee shoppe reading our little blog…you are one of two things: 1. PSYCHED you went today and can’t wait to re-live the experience through our literary prose or 2. WISHING you went today and are actively fueling your FOMO while downing that triple, buckeye, snowstorm latte with sprinkles on top. If you’re the latter, drink up, use that caffeine, scrub those toes, procrastinate a little more at work and make that commitment to yourself that you will FOMO-no-more! The end of the year is upon us – go out of 2014 with a bang, a boom, and a bravo to yourself for beating all those new-years-resolution-do something-good-for-yourself hypes! You don’t have to make new years resolutions if you’re already kicking ass and taking names, enjoying life and surrounding yourself with good people! Have an epic and balmy Wednesday tribe – you earned it! And don’t forget: when you see a playground, ignore the age restrictions sign, and let that little kid inside shine!
That extra something.
How do you define November Project? How do you quantify this movement? Why do YOU keep just showing up? Is it the workout? That’s probably part of it, sure. But there’s more to it than that. There’s something else that drives thousands of people to get out their beds at 5, 530, and 6 am, to just show up and workout. There’s something else that pushes people to step out of their normal routine, step out of their comfort zone, and to keep coming back. And it’s that something else that inspires people to tell more people, to tell more people, who in turn, tell even more people and without realizing it, a community is born. And then suddenly the product of that “something else”, that little extra, becomes the definition of the driving force behind it. A year ago, something extra was missing in San Diego. Today, for 150+ of us, and hopefully many more to come, the community of November Project is strong. Sure, the workouts are hard, we don’t go easy on you there. But it’s the tribe of people, the friendships, the love that keep us all coming back. Life is crazy, and there is a lot we can’t control. What we can have a say in, is who we spend our time with, and how we use what time we have here. So even if you’re time in San Diego is short-lived, if you’re moving, traveling, injured or have a job interview Monday morning, the tribe will always be here, because that’s what family does. We sweat together, stick together, and will always miss you when you’re not here. And if you do have to leave, we will all wear your favorite color, we will all repeatedly bear hug you during the workout, and Ashleigh will personalize a rap song just for you. Because again, that’s what family does.
We can dance if we want to
We can dance if we want to
We’ve got all your life and mine
As long as we abuse it
Never gonna lose it
Everything will work out right
I say, we can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
Because your friends don’t dance
And if they don’t dance
Well they’re no friends of mine
Rappers Delight
Get it. Get it. Get it.
So many stairs! Anyone else leave Monday’s repeating things over and over in their head? Got it. Got it. Got it. Run. Run. Run. Burpee. Burpee. Burpee. Around 8am, this typically erupts into a pseudo rap song in my head where I suddenly speak like I write, and bust out moves Jay Z would want to steal. It’s a pretty epic moment. So as I drop it like its hot, make sure you slide to the left and stop. drop. shut em down, and open up shop. Get low and shake it. Shake it. Shake it like a Polaroid picture and crush today like you did the PR Workout this morning. Rise and Shine San Diego!
Check. What’s your Wednesday look like? Are you going to an office? Do you have kids to get to school? Do you work in your car? Will you be in charge of other people’s kids? Do you have to cook all day? Do you have a big meeting? Do you have a big date? Will you park yourself in a coffee shop? Do you work in a hospital all day? Do you work outdoors? Okay. Let’s be real. It’s San Diego, and we all “work” as little as possible. Regardless of what your Wednesday looks like, you started it off right! You and 143 of your closest, sweaty friends started this Wednesday off with a Fuck Yeah, and now you are unstoppable! WE are unstoppable. November Project world takeover is happening. It’s already happened. And like that little voice in the back of your head telling you to Rise and Shine, it’s not going away! So get up! Jump up! Get amped up! Because this is just the beginning! So go to your office, pick up those kids, get in your car, do whatever it is that you do on Wednesdays and do it with pride! Do it with the knowledge that you are part of something big, something epic, and don’t forget: you kick ass before most people take their morning piss. Be Happy! Be Strong! Be BRIGHT SD!Read It
It’s Monday. We run stairs on Monday. Yes, today is Monday and we run stairs on stairs on Monday. But stairs was not the only thing we did on this Monday. There were some particularly painful partner things. There were some solo soliloquies of sprinting. There were some ridiculous rendezvous of rapid repetitions. And what would a Monday be without the hundreds of high-fiving, happy, healthy, hippopotamus hugs. (I just wanted to say hippopotamus…). Dr. Seuss-isms aside, today kicked ass and we wish you were there. And just incase you missed it – the red holiday cups are out at Starbucks.
Out of your gourd
Halloween. The stuff that dreams are made of. A day when people can be whatever, whoever they want. We chose superheroes for our super human tribe. Our tribe? They chose us…well three of you did… and we are still speechless. NPSD, and it’s six leaders today, split up and took on each other in a battle of epic proportions. There were decks, sprints, gourds, planks, army crawls and countless capes! The capes! We had a princess handing out cornbread (Sorry Chris Moreland, not only did you miss your cornbread, you could have been the 100th man today). We had paparazzi. It was an all out gourd time! Except for the moment we realized someone stole the gourds off the lollipop loop! It’s not every day you get to say a sentence like that! But alas, it’s true. Who steals a gourd?! Honestly.
Today is Monday.
Today we ran some stairs. Up. Down. Up. Down. That is all.

Ok, seriously, when in Big Foots Basement do we just run stairs?! There were burpees! There were box jumps! There were push ups! There were mountain climbers! And like the running of the bulls in Pamplona our tribe was all over it. Literally. There were people everywhere. It was chaos (for a hot minute). But mostly it was fucking awesome. The usual suspects were all there, but the best part about these past few weeks is that there are so many new faces! Feel like you missed something? You did. Wishing you had just gotten out of bed? You should have. Does this scare you? Good. Just Show Up. It’s not every day that you can wake up and instantly feel like a member of some superhuman, superhero tribe of sleepy eyed, sweaty, endorphin induced happy people. Nope, not every day…yet… Your next shot? Wednesday!
Happy Birfday!! (SD)
Bounce Houses! Balloon Animals! Rocket Ships! Ice Cream Trucks! Music! Fireworks! Sumo Wrestlers! Trapeze Swingers! Lions! Pin the Tail on the Donkey! Donuts! Clowns! Slip n Slides! Coffee! Dragon tamers! And 116 Beautiful People doing tons of burpees and celebrating NPSD turning the big Numero Uno! We here in San Diego know how to party, and even though only 25% of the above actually happened, we may as well have had it all because it was a damn good party! We’ve had an epic year of growth, with a host of firsts for our first birthday to get excited about. The first time we hit 100. The first time we tagged 100 shirts and learned that masks are probably a good idea. The first time we were featured in print…and then TV. The first time we got yelled at for having our dogs off leash. The first time someone proposed at NPSD. The first time you realized getting up and just showing up isn’t that hard anymore, because you’re so freaking excited to see everyone. But now, it’s time to step out of our Pampers NPSD. It’s Time to pull on those big boy pants and leave infancy behind. Our Terrible Twos are upon us, and by Terrible I mean Terrific. (Does anyone say Terrific anymore?) Because Year TWO is shaping up to be not only bigger, better and sweatier than the first, its going to change the world. All because of YOU. So Happy Birthday to the NPSD Tribe, it’s been a wild ride and oh so fun. So keep on keepin on tribe – because you’re doing it all RIGHT.
