Like it, love it, want more of it! (ORL)

This week we we shared the love with several first timers to NPO. We planked to near perfection in order of birthdates; then Cupid shuffled our way through a workout of heart racing bench jumps and Vday ups, regularly taking relationship breaks to pair up with a new partner and bust out some burpees, partner pushups or curtsy lunges. Once our hearts were sufficiently racing, we were led through a relaxing cool down by one of our beloved members who regularly shows up for her community, her friends, her loved ones and herself. Let us introduce you to Lara. read more

Trouble is our middle name (ORL)

Nothing good happens after midnight. That’s why we encourage you to get to bed early on Tuesdays, and set your alarm clocks for early Wednesday mornings, where we meet in Baldwin Park and see what kinds of trouble we can get into before the sun rises! This week, the Trouble was real as we turned the classic board game into a team challenge to see who could get through the board of burpees, squats, pushups, leg lifts and planks with out being landed on and sent back to the start. Only one team managed to elude the others and, in doing so, elude the run to Jake Street and a quick trip back to the start where they were faced with #moreburpees. read more

Going all in (ORL)

Wednesday morning, the group was dealt a wild card right from the start, by being given a burnout to warmup with. ACDC’s classic, ‘Thunderstruck’ set the ante at 19 burpees and everybody called that bet. The main workout was a multiple choice card game and players partnered up to choose their fate. Each person drew a card and then had the option of choosing which exercise to complete depending on which suit they drew. Hearts had the upper body working, diamonds were decidedly difficult leg exercises, spades crushed our cores and clubs were our cardiovascular conditioning. I saw lots of people drawing face cards, which gave them the opportunity to run a happy little lap by the lake. And, I saw no one choose more burpees as their cardio-which is fine, I guess– because no matter what, you have a hand in this game as long as you just show up! read more

Birthdays, birthdays and more birthdays (ORL)

Wisconsin notes:

    • Orlando celebrated 3 years
    • USA celebrated 243 years
    • Watermelon 5k
    • Another NP city is born

This past week was full of celebrations! It was 3 years ago on Saturday that the Orlando Fit Project held their very first workout. They hoisteed their way to building a successful #freefitness community, becoming the 33rd official November Project location in a mere 6 months! We celebrated that success with a birthday social at Soco restaurant where memories were shared, southern inspired cuisine was consumed, drinks and conversation flowed and helium was inhaled. A helluva party it was! And it was the perfect precursor to a workout that celebrated the Declaration of Independence being signed a mere 243 years ago. We memorialized the year 1776 by teaming up in groups of 3 and attempting to accumulate 1776 reps that encompassed 10 different exercises. Not every team made it all the way to 1776 reps, but every team worked nonstop (besides a patriotic salute to the flag during Whitney’s rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner) to get as close to reaching that goal as they possibly could. The Wednesday morning workout that included liberty lunges, star spangled squats and holiday hoistees had our legs properly prepped for another year of kicking off the 4th of July with a Watermelon 5K through the beautiful streets of Winter Park. The Florida heat and humidity did not disappoint as we flew like firecrackers over the red brick roads. A special thanks to everyone who participated-whether you were running, walking or cheering; it was great to start another morning with YOU! read more

I think we’ve found it, the rainbow connection (ORL)

Red and orange, green and blue, highlighter yellow and purple, too. Those are the colors of our community spirit. Community is what this whole thing is about, connecting with and supporting our neighbors is what we are continually trying to achieve.

NPO had a lot to celebrate as we got our sweat on at sunrise. We were ready to welcome Global Running Day with long laps and a colorful workout. I met up with Lara, Sylvia G. and Jennifer at 5:45am to add a couple of more miles toward the Brooks/Strava Run it Forward challenge that ended Wednesday night. For me, running is more of a social activity, and thanks to November Project, I get many opportunities to log some miles. Our workout this week was inspired by the phenomenon itself, Roy G. Biv. We Reversed lunged, Oblique crunched, Y-raised, Glute bridged, burpeed, Inchworm push-upped, and V-sat our way into tip-top physical shape! Of course, being GRD, we threw a long lap in between each exercise. That also gave each colorful character in the group a chance to head over to the photo station where they got their individual shots for the NP yearbook, 2019 edition. It was really great to see some faces that we haven’t seen in a while… Nobody wants to miss out on yearbook photo day! The colors of the rainbow really suited all skin tones present in the early hours, and the smiles enhanced your looks even more! Like Kermit once said, “rainbows are visions and only illusions and rainbows have nothing to hide.” So don’t hide, come out and join us every Wednesday morning and see what this group can offer you. read more

My handshake brings all of you to the lake

This week we made our homework into class work by getting 22+10=32 pushups out of the way-so we could have fun on the playground with our friends.

This gem of a workout originated in Minneapolis and had made appearances in Grand Rapids, NYC, and Baltimore before making its way to Orlando. The idea is simple, straightforward and fun while allowing your creative and silly sides to shine through. Partner up with a new friend; one person performs assigned exercise while the other runs, when the runner returns, the fun begins by creating move #1 of their new secret handshake. The new found friends had just begun their journey to something beautiful. They then swapped activities and continued on their journey to a refreshing, newfound friendship bliss. Dozens of squats, dips and lunges later, they had a new bond with their new bff, as well as their very own handshake that each pair demonstrated for the rest of the group. An enthusiastic round of applause had Erik and Chelsea brushing off their shoulders in a triumphant Round One victory. The second half of recess had everyone making a new friend and an inventive new shake. Lara and Todd’s smooth moves including the running man, the Carlton and some persuasive pelvic thrusts won the crowd over as they were hailed as the title holders of the first NPO handshake shakedown. Their grand prize was a choice between a Roxanne, Sebastian, or Bazzi burnout. You don’t turn down a Bazzi when the opportunity is presented. 16 burpees and a fast lap later, the tribe proved that they are excelling at their challenge to better their burpee technique, and can’t wait to relay those improvements to the Headmasters. Solid work, students. read more

Squad goals (ORL)

The depths of the SNL sketches is where I found my inspiration for this morning’s bounce. And, a dynamite bounce it was. I love that, with this early morning group of friends, I’m able to bust out my inner cheerleader every now and then. What better time to try and squeeze my late 30s self in to that red, white, and blue NCA uniform one more time, than in the days after the collegiate Cheerleading National Championships. read more

Barkley Schmarkley (ORL)

Well, after a couple of blog tests, #angelface and I have determined that no one in our beautiful tribe reads these witty weekly posts that we publish. We are coming up on our 1 year leaderversary, and with all the fun we’ve had this year, I must say-(and I speak for myself) that I have stressed out about writing this blog, that nobody reads, on multiple occasions. So, with that being said, we are going to keep doing this blogging thing- who knows, maybe there’s someone we don’t know of, in the woods of Bangladesh, who looks forward to our witty weekly posts on what’s happening in Orlando. Maybe they couldn’t be there to give us a flower last week, or tell us the secret code phrase this week. Well, this one is for you, mystery reader. And, we’ll keep blogging as a way to keep track of what we did week to week and anything out of the ordinary that may have occurred at Harbor Park on Wednesday mornings. read more

March Madness (ORL)

When Wednesday rolled around with another threat of rain this week, some of you posted up in bed and some of you made a fast break for Harbor Park, where you know you can always find a little morning madness. We got bouncing to Kurtis Blow and the team was hyped for the games to come. We split into two groups, and showed off our proficient(ish) ball handling skills in a warmup game that had us making some clean chest passes followed by a single burpee and squat hold. The only foul was committed by Rob, who seemed to be a little lost at the end of the line. He was quickly called out by the officials, and stepped up to the line to make up for his violation. read more

6 o’ one, 1/2 dozen of the other (ORL)

Springing our clocks ahead an hour this week was perfect timing for the elusive leprechauns of central Florida to come out and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day a wee bit early. We got things rolling with a magically delicious Lucky Charms relay warmup. Even though Ray was caught rainbow handed- illegally using those mitts, his team still could not overcome Team 1 who came out as the victors in this exercise. illegal use of the hands ⬆️proper form ⬆️⬇️Would they be able to keep the momentum up as we moved right in to the main competition? Teams could choose any three out of eight exercises, and complete 17 reps of each action. Then, they got to run-following a rainbow route that led them back to the main deck and directly to a pot of coins. There they drew one at random, and if it was gold, they had the luck of avoiding the 3 burpee penalty and banking that gold coin for their team. If they were just as lucky, they choose blue, purple or silver, threw it back in the pot, got to do the three burpees and start fresh from the top with another set of 3/17. Depending on your outlook, all teams could be considered winners on Wednesday. While Team Three brought home the most gold coins, thus doing the least burpees and winning chocolate, Teams One, Two and Four got to do bonus burpees and avoid the temporarily satisfying confections. No matter how many Blarney Burpees, Shamrock Shuffles, Dublin Dips or Jameson Jumping Jacks those lucky little leprechauns did, they were all eligible for a Tubthumping burnout of half burpees, planks and squats that left the lads and lasses quite knackered! So, it’s hard to name real winner, when it’s 6 o’ one and a 1/2 dozen of the other! As always, we are thrilled that you show up week after week to improve yourselves and encourage others to do the same. The shenanigans and friendly competitions that we come up with would not be possible without your participation. Now, get out there this weekend, celebrate your roots-have some corned beef, taters and Guinness-you earned it and, well, everyone’s a wee bit Irish this weekend! read more
