Today’s post is going to be different. Instead of talking about how amazing we all our for training in the cold (keep in mind that Edmonton is still kicking asses and taking names) or trying to be witty by talking about the strength of gorillas, or BG’s infected toe, today I’ll give you Monday’s location up front (Donnelly Field in Cambridge) and will have our friend Brett Vankoski take it from here. Brett is smart, wise, and deals with distress better than most of us would. Brett, you and your family are an inspiration and we wish you all the best!
Ooooops! I May Have Accidentally Run 13.1 Miles – Guest Blog by Tommy Layman (BOSTON)
I’m proud to revive a routine that we’ve put down for the last few months. Today’s Guest Blogger is a man who, not only gets from one end of town to the other for each Monday-Wednesday-Friday workout we host, but he rarely misses an NP gathering of any kind, ever. Tommy Layman is still within his first year #NP_BOS membership but has already made his name known as he plasters the city with our shared story in an attempt to explain the power of what we’re building. Now it’s time to hear a little piece of his story, so without further ado, we give you… (intense pause) Tommy Layman!
Some 18 Year Olds Have It Figured Out
Any of you that have been to a NPSD workout know this girl. And her mom. They are weekly regulars and have been since the beginning. To the naked eye, she’s a positive, fit, smiling chick. Cool, you may think to yourself. But once you discover that she’s really an 18 year old kid (I know I wasn’t doing voluntary 6:30am workouts in high school) who graduated high school 6 months early and is going to play Div 1 soccer at Oregon next year, you see her in a whole new light. I present Twist, our very first guest blogger:
The Man Behind the Rise and Shine (YEG)
Calvin Delisle is an ambassador of the tribe. He is a protector of our country and a loving father. Calvin is the type of guy who finds something, and falls madly in love with it. In his first workout, we crashed a multicultural food festival, and after that, he proclaimed that he would get a tattoo. We’re not even sure if he knew that there would not be a festival every time. The only thing you really need to know about Calvin, is that he has your back. He’ll be there to do whatever you need, before you even know you need it. He had multiple copies of our stencils and way too many cans of spray paint before we knew what #grassroots gear was. I think he can read my mind.
The Tale of Two Tribes
With the Tribe expanding to the #PowerfulX, this blogpost comes from a two city staple, Celena Dopart. Celena was born and raised in the Nation’s Capital and is currently getting her master’s in aeronautics and astronautics at MIT (Turbo-fucking-Smart) doing a thesis on astronaut jet packs and how to best levitate from stadium section to stadium section. Celena made a big impression on the DC tribe during holiday break, continually bringing energy, smiles, and New England style hugs (still pushing for the hips to be in here in DC). Now that tribes are popping up to the left, right, north, and south (maybe Celena will get us to the moon on day as well), #justshowup on vacation, or on business, or to see the SD hotties. Whatever the reason is, keep sculpting your ass and supporting the world take over movement. Here’s Celena’s take on the life of a two tribe woman. -DM
Trust him, he’s a doctor.
In some circles, he goes by Dave “Make Love Not” Wargowski, but we call him “Dr. Dave” since he’s a doctor and we love alliteration. More technically, he’s a “medical geneticist”… I don’t know what that means or if it’s even a real thing, but I’d trust him with anything from brain surgery to delivering my child. In any case, I was thrilled to receive the following unprompted blog submission from the good doctor himself. He’s the paternal figure of NP-MSN (due to his wisdom, not age), and he epitomizes the spirit of our huggy and awesome community. Enjoy! – Teddy G
November Project…Meet Paul! (YEG)
November Project tribe members, we would like to introduce you to an Edmonton Tribe member named Paul. As Paul prepares to take his daughter to her first Edmonton Oilers game as a result of tweeting his verbal for tomorrow’s workout we invite you to take a little time learn about his November Project journey thus far…Paul sent out the following tweet about a month ago…
How Long Is Frogman1? Science (Ari) Has The Answer
Ari Ofsevit is one of those dudes that works hard, does crazy races of all kinds (trail, road, cross-country, with or without skis), sings Canadian National Anthem at the stadium, but when presented with a challenging question will do whatever is takes to find the answer. On chilly December day, when asked what’s the distance of #Frogman1, he whipped out his calculator, wikipedia, and MS Word, and went to work. Now he claims that if you were to do stadium 17 weeks in the row, it will equal summiting Mt. Everest. Is this statement true, we have no clue, but his arguments are very compelling. Ladies and gentleman, we present Ari Ofsevit.
Ho Ho Ho!! Merrrrrry Christmas! Guest blog post by Marisa Levine
Today in SF Ted Gurman, Co-leader of the MSN tribe, led NPSF through their paces. They ran, they jumped, they awkwardly laughed at Ted’s not-so-funny jokes. Big thanks for TG coming through so the SF tribe didn’t miss a beat. For today’s blog post, we asked Marisa Levine to write about her intro to NP and how it has changed (or ruined?) her Wednesday/Friday mornings. We hoped for the former, but promised not to edit if she chose the latter. Marisa is another Northeastern University graduate (Go Huskies!) and has been one of our leading recruiters with her genuine enthusiasm, that she lightly mixes with a twist of sarcasm. Something all NP leaders appreciate. Take it away Marisa! And a MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!
Just KEEP Showing Up, With a Smile
Washington, D.C.’s first guest blog post is being written from 13,767.9 [km] away from the District by our very own Lauren Bateman. Lauren is currently in the Philippines (where she has been knocking out deck workouts) working with the Red Cross in Typhoon Haiyan relief. I personally knew Lauren was a special person back in October when I announced at the Wednesday workout that I would be scouting hills the next Friday and anyone was welcome to come. Lauren was the lone person who came out and pushed me to be better. Her dedication and constant positive attitude is infectious and we cannot wait to get her back state side to see that smile again. Here is Lauren’s message to anyone thinking about coming, experiences so far in NP DCA, and how good hugs feel at 6:30 am (really f-ing good).
