A Peek Under The Hood

November Project Members embrace at Pre-Boston-Marathon workout

In the past few weeks, we’ve made an announcement about adding new sponsors to the global November Project family. We also stated that November Project will start accepting donations as we are now a non-profit organization. Since then we have received requests for more details regarding how we will allocate the funds donated. Hopefully, the following breakdown will help answer those questions:

Leadership Support and Training:

Our leaders are our most important assets. Their willingness to selflessly wake up before dawn and lead workouts is the only reason that this movement keeps growing and prospering. It’s vital to us that we continue to provide them with support and resources so they can continue to excel in leading their city. One way we do that is by connecting them with other leaders at our annual gathering we call the Meeting Of the Minds, or MOM for short. At MOM, the leaders have the opportunity to share stories, learn from each other’s successes and failures, and foster relationships that transcend geographical boundaries and time zones. We discuss everything under the leadership umbrella such as creative ways to recruit new members, how we can improve inclusivity, ways to plan an efficient workout, as well as addressing ‘Corporate’ topics with strategic decisions that we at NP HQ are working on. We also bring in specialists who have a unique perspective on diversity and inclusion to challenge us to shift paradigms. And even though the hashtag #safetythird has seen its fair share of usage on social media channels, we take the safety of our members very seriously and offer CPR certification classes to every co-leader interested.

Day-To-Day Operations:

November Project, Inc. has two full-time employees, Brogan Graham and Bojan Mandaric, and one part-time contributor, Laura Green. This trio is in charge of all non-workout leading operations including, but not limited to, designing and executing NP strategy, planning and operating an annual budget, communicating with leaders, growing the new and existing NP locations, and collaborating with our sponsors, partners, and local communities. As we move into this new space, the job description is now expanding into the growth of the non-profit/youth program and fundraising that may require bringing on more hands on deck.

Administrative Cost:

And finally, the not-so-sexy yet extremely valuable tools associated with administrative duties which include website hosting and maintenance, accounting, legal expertise and compliance, mailing, and printing, just to name a few.

We hope this gives you a more transparent view on how your donations are used to grow the movement we all love and appreciate. If you’re interested in supporting November Project, click here.

Brooks x November Project = Awesome

Today we’re proud to announce Brooks as the official footwear and apparel sponsor of November Project. Brooks has been woven into the fabric of NP Seattle since the early days. From the CEO down to the newest hires, they celebrate the culture of bettering the world through running and movement. Based on these shared core values, it didn’t take us long to get excited about the potential of our combined reach. The Brooks influence will be multifaceted, including financial support, access to new footwear and apparel, resources for our leadership training and the annual November Project Summit, entries into Brooks-sponsored running events, and activations on a local and global level. We’re ramping up to do some very cool things together and couldn’t be more excited.

#NPSUMMIT
This year’s annual gathering of all November Project members from around the world will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, November 15-18 at The Rock’n’Roll Las Vegas. The races on Saturday (5K) and Sunday (10K, 13.1M, 26.2M) actually shut down the iconic “Strip” and don’t start until the sun sets. There is so much more to come, but for now, plan to partake in various activities that will kick off with the workout on Saturday morning and conclude on Sunday night. We will be sharing NP-specific registration codes soon but if you’re so excited that you HAVE to register immediately, who are we to say no?

We’re stoked about all the incredible things that are ahead of us but for now, please join us in welcoming Brooks to the global November Project family!

My First Ultra-Marathon on the Playground of the Gods – Heather Bray

Today’s guest blog is brought to you by powerful athlete, amazing woman, loving mom, beautiful human & talented writer – Heather Bray ( @hulahooprunner )
Sit back, relax, enjoy the read and let the words below take you on a journey, a 53 kilometer jou
rney – an ultra- marathon!

Six months ago, I booked a flight to Cyprus. It was not because of a promise of charming villages, expansive coastlines, ancient history, mouth-watering Mediterranean cuisine, or an island encapsulated by the sun three hundred-plus days of the year, though these facts were persuasive. The reason to go to Cyprus, also known as the playground of the gods, was because a fellow November Project Tribe Member, Antoinette, had offered me a chance to run my first ultramarathon and I, as most avid runners would do, greedily accepted. read more

I really don’t need this…

When browsing the blog archives of November Project I find quite a few compelling stories… people who went through difficulties, had found love, compassion, inclusion, and support within their tribe. It seems they needed something and November Project was there to give it to them. Although I love reading those stories of lives improved, in some cases perhaps even lives saved, I really don’t see how any of this applies to me, I can’t really relate to any of these stories. read more

It Takes an Urban Village ( AMS )

When explaining to somone what November Project is, you will often here us say ‘ It’s more than just a workout ’, and we mean it!
On to many more Wacky Wednesdays together!

Guest blog brought to you by Hulahooprunner

Urban sociology theorizes that individuals embrace the anonymity offered by cities. City dwellers enjoy the large, dense, and heterogenous atmosphere provided by urban culture. Amongst the hustle and bustle background, urbanites camouflage themselves. Unlike small towns – where everybody knows your name, birthday, street address, and what you had for breakfast – cities offer isolation, superficial connections, and fleeting relationships. In the absence of intimate personal acquaintanceships, however, cities can also be a breeding ground for loneliness.

I know what loneliness feels like first hand. I moved to Amsterdam, the capital and most populous city of the Netherlands, in 2015. With a population of approximately 820,000 people, Amsterdam by my small-town, rural standards is a proper city. As a working mother, and expat, I quickly became immersed in, and shocked by, city life. Cramped into a small apartment, with maximum social distance, I began the process of self-invention and self-erasure. Instead of creating any social bonds or establishing close ties with anyone or any particular group (minus a few colleagues), I slowly detached and disengaged from my surroundings.

I had been invited to this group called November Project on January 1, 2017 by one of its members, David. It would still take me another nine months before I would finally show up. It wasn’t because I was lazy or because I couldn’t commit to early morning workouts. Those that know me, know that I am a morning person and that I am anything but slothful. It also wasn’t because I had too many social engagements or fitness groups to attend. I was deficient in both fronts.

The reason it took me so long to finally show up at the Nemo Stairs at 6:28am on Wednesday was because I was sick. My illness, however, was invisible. I had no physical ailments, injury, scars, or bruising to show. I was chronically depressed, and I was existing in the darkness of anonymity. I was simply a Jane Doe wandering aimlessly through the narrow streets of Amsterdam plagued by fear, anxiety, and loneliness. I was suffering from an imperceptible agony and I had no cure.

I was ashamed, guilt-ridden, and secretly shouldering a burden that was leaving indentations on my spirit. Somewhere between the hopelessness and nothingness, I had mustered enough energy to devise the ultimate escape plan. With the curtains drawn, body lethargic, and mind lulled by blackness, I had become a problem solver. I had designed the most effective way to eliminate the pain: suicide. It was a bullet-proof, inescapable plan. I had a date set and a fail-safe method chosen.

It was not an easy, weak, selfish, or sinful decision. It was the only way out of this abyss. I no longer wanted to be a burden to those that I loved. I did not want to die. I just no longer had the ability to live. Due to a fortunate set of events and intervention by a friend, my family, and medical professionals, I was able to step back from the ledge and get the help I so desperately needed. But this was only the beginning of what would become an intense, multi-pronged, treatment plan.

On my road to recovery, I needed to somehow find connection with my fellow urban villagers. I had for too long passed unnoticed, hiding in the dark crevices of urban spaces. I could no longer engage in disappearing acts. I needed to deconstruct the anonymity and connectedness binary. This is where November Project entered the scene. Nine months after being invited to join the Amsterdam Tribe, I finally found myself greeted with tight embraces, high fives, goedemorgens, and a whole lot of cheer. I found it uncomfortable. I felt out of place. But I was also a bit intrigued. As the Wednesday mornings rolled into the next, I found myself hugging back, letting down my guard, and even having a bit of fun (gasp!). November Project had overridden the need for anonymity in the city and created a bond of lifestyle, of shared interests, of kinship. It created urban connectedness and was my very own urban village within a larger city.

Since joining November Project, my son has also become a regular tribe member. He is the only four-year-old I know that has mastered the burpee and plank. Every Wednesday (which he calls ‘Wacky Wednesday’), he wakes up excited to workout, to give high fives, to wear his grassroots gear, and to be goofy with the tribe leaders, Saskia and Roderik. Within less than a year, November Project has become an extended family to us.

So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, Amsterdam Tribe, for saving my life each and every Wednesday morning and for allowing me and my son free entrance into your awesome urban village.

Heather and Kid X, we’re glad you are here!

Veel liefs, NP AMS

Exciting New Direction

Over the last six and a half years, the co-founders of November Project, Bojan & Brogan, have been expanding the movement while it continues to grow organically through passionate and dedicated volunteer leadership, weatherproof workouts, and supportive communities, all at the cost of zero dollars. But with expansion comes evolution and November Project is proud to announce the next chapter of the movement, as a nonprofit organization. This year, with the support of everyone in our community, the structure of November Project (NP) will be one that involves more than simply two co-founders.

The goal of NP as a free fitness movement will remain the same. At our future and existing
locations around the world, we will continue to work hard at cultivating a culture of inclusivity, and will never stop proving that fun, fierce, free, and efficient morning workouts have the power to positively change the places we live in. The new arm of the NP nonprofit is one which we are incredibly excited about. We aim to use the spirit of NP to host our first community outreach plan that aims specifically at youth. After all, the NP rulebook for accountability, human connection, intense fitness, and support for all fitness levels could make an even larger impact if we use these tools to train a younger generation, creating healthy habits from an early age.

Financial resources to support the efforts of the NP nonprofit, the ongoing movement, and to keep great humans in the NP family at an organizational level, will come from personal
donations, grants, in-kind donations, and strategic partnerships. One of those partners, The North Face, has been powering November Project movement for the last three years and will continue to support NP at a global level through access to outdoor training gear, storytelling via various media outlets, leadership gatherings, and the annual November Project Summit. NP will pursue other partnership that will broaden the opportunities to bring free fitness to more people, but The North Face will remain the exclusive apparel, footwear, and equipment partner, and just like the last three years in this partnership, will be the reason November Project is able to continue the growth. Details on how you can directly support (aside from just showing up) will be revealed in the weeks to come.

The November Project team and the Board of Directors are ecstatic to progress this movement into the nonprofit space and set even bigger goals to achieve in the years to come. Hold onto your hats, folks, it’s about to get even crazier!

Mindset is Everything – Angeline

Your mind is a powerful thing, when you fill it with positive thoughts, your life will start to change.

Two weeks ago Angeline won the NP AMS Positivity Award, time and time again Ange proves what a badass she is. In the last month of 2017 she completed not one, but two challenges. Completing a 5k a day run streak as well as doing the daily workouts as per the NP YYZ ( Toronto ) Holiday Challenge. She kicked ass and we couldn’t be more proud.

After finishing the December challenges Ange initiated a Burpee Challenge for the tribe for the month January, burpees being her hated exercise, this is an extra push to do them daily and to get better, stronger & faster along the way.
Structurally showing up to the workouts, smile radiating, the biggest warmest hugs, and as time passes by embracing the weirdness that is NP. Looking forward to the last Wednesday of this month where we all complete the final 31 burpees together!

Ange sent in below blogpost after mustering up some courage to tell her story. The mic is yours darling!

Hi guys,

My name is Angeline, short Ange. Mother of two kids (son 20 and daughter almost 18). Struggling with weight issues since the age of 16. Looking back at pictures I noticed that I didn’t actually have those issues at that time. Apparently it was in my mind. I am not a very social person, so I don’t make contact quickly.

I started running in 2009 at the age of 40. It was short after the Damloop of that year ( biggest race in the Netherlands with 50.000 participants ) . My former co-worker said let’s all do next year’s Damloop together. My first thought was OMG! I wasn’t as skinny and fit like my colleagues, so I started to run. I started with a basic schedule from the Internet. In September I was ready for my first race: Damloop 2010! In the end my colleagues didn’t run after all. I got a bib from a friend and I ran alone and finished my first 16.1k. I was hooked!
I am not fast and still not skinny (yeah that’s me, the chubby lady on the pic 😉) The ‘slow and sexy’ pace is still too fast for me, but I like to run.

In July 2016 I saw a message regarding Amsterdam Fit Project on Facebook and asked my sister to join me in August. If she had said no that time, I probably never would have showed up.
From the first weirdness and joy, we were hooked and started to show up every week. This morning workout makes me smile a whole day long!

So yes, I will be there anytime possible for #squadgoals 💪!!

Love u guys 💕.

Ange

We’ve chosen to brag little more on Ange’s behalf; after running her first race in 2010, some research shows us that Angelina ran the Rotterdam Marathon in April 2016! BOOM!

Lieve Angeline, we vinden je een topper! Op naar vele gezellige woensdagen samen!
We’re glad you are part of our NP Family!
Veel liefs, much love, nos stima bo!
