Why? Why not? – BAL

I’m about to tell a potentially embarrassing story, but it’s a story that has come to dictate a good many things in my life (and honestly, at this point, who gives a shit about embarrassment). It’s also the story I was thinking about while I was holding a plank in damp sand surrounded by 130+ other people. read more

A letter to the veterans of the tribe- #NP_BAL

This is an open letter to all of our NP vets, those of you that have been around for months or years, rarely missing a workout, always working hard, always saying yes. Thanks for being there.

Now do something most of you don’t do that often ( I only say this as one of your fellow, speed through life at 100-mil per hour type folks) and stop. Think back to the first moment that you realized you had friends and community waiting for youIMG_9559 at 6:30 am. Think about what that moment looked like, and what it took to get you to that point. What was the moment that took you from an outsider to someone who was truly a part of something. read more

A Challenge: From Baltimore to All The Rest of You Catz: BAL

Dear other tribes members,

This letter goes out to all you tribe members, the gazillion of you all over the country and world. Baltimore has something for you. And no, it’s not proximity to DC or easy access to I-95 so you can go visit “college friends” in NYC. It’s also not Harvard Stadium so stop asking. It’s a very simple workout we call “15×15.” read more

Screw it, just jump in puddles- BAL

We’re going to keep it short and sweet today. Let’s do this Wisconsin Notes Style.*

*Wisconsin notes are a way of abbreviating the most important lessons learned from our workouts. This does not mean we are going to Wisconsin, that any workout will ever be in Wisconsin, or for that matter that we even like Wisconsin. It’s just the name…ok!? read more

Skin is In & why saying yes is important (again)-NP_BAL

That’s right ladies and gents, warmer weather means that “Skin is In.” Just a few short weeks ago you cats were allIMG_8308 bundled up in your Nordic chill wear. But now the weather is starting to turn, the less than weatherproof are crawling back out of their hibernation pods and Skin is this season’s biggest fashion accessory. The next few months are going to be golden, so start bringing your friends, your family and anyone else you think needs a little love in their life. We’re serious. NP is way more fun if you have someone to text later in the day, moaning about how sore your calves are. read more

Mayoral Candidates and The remains of Light City- Baltimore

Wisconsin Notes ( What we call it when we’re kind of tight on time and need to get up a blog. Maybe we’re tight on time because of work or maybe we’re tight on time because Mr. Tastee is now serving up sweet treats in the neighborhood.)

  1. November Project now has a book. You should check it out…maybe order yourself a copy. It’s kind of dope. Not as dope as our workouts or the people at them, but should you ever be stranded in some godforsaken city where November Project hasn’t yet blossomed, it’s a reasonable substitute.
  2. Mr. Dave Warnock was at our workout this morning. In case you didn’t know, Dave is running for Mayor. It also just so happens that Mr. Warnock eats stairs like they count towards the election. Anyway, if you didn’t get to meet him this morning, hunt him down, tweet at him, ask good questions, read his platform…challenge him to 7 minutes of burpees (AKA: 1 SEBASTIAN!). IMG_8094
  3. It got a little chilly this morning and some of our numbers dwindled.  In particular, 5:30 was just the hardest of the core. Listen guys, if you’re going to wrap yourself back in your superman fleecy every time the thermometer drops below 35 it may be time to reevaluate how weatherproof you are. Weather happens and if it’s something you let dictate your day to day routine, it’s going to just do that. So go ahead, unwrap yourself, quit asking your co-workers when they think spring is going to get here ( no matter how many times you ask they still won’t know and still only kind of think you’re funny), and take on the weather.  People in the world and in our tribe are battling through way harder stuff than chilly temps. Great, see you next wed.
  4. Hey MATAN, Welcome back!
  5. The girl pictured below won this week’s positivity award. Her name is Anna and i’m really stoked to be able to call her a friend and i’m even more stoked to have been able to give her this award today. All of our positivity award winners exemplify some wonderful trait and i’m privileged to know all of you, past, present and future. But for a second i’m going to talk about Anna. Anna works hard. Really, really hard. Anna is a reminder  that NP isn’t always easy, that progress takes time and that fast is all relative…hard work, however, is not. Anna is funny and goofy and a joy to be around, but what has always impressed me about her is her willingness to be uncomfortable.  It’s her desire to actively pursue goals, get her shit kicked in along the way, get back up and keep on moving. The first time Anna came to NP I was 90% sure she was never going to come back. Months later i’m here hoping she never leaves. Get to know her, follow her. And if you have goals and you really want something, just shut up and go get it.

BUILD A WALL!- #NP_BAL

Today, a wall went up.

IMG_7399

Sometimes, a huge barrier to your spectacular workout plans erects itself in the middle of your park. You wake up, get yourself in the car with a large pitcher of coffee ( I drink coffee in pitchers only!), make your way down to Rash Field only to find out that the wall that was SUPPOSED to be along the border of Mexico is actually in the middle of your workout location. So what do you do? Your co-leaders are off gallivanting through Ecuador, riding mules and getting matching butterfly tattoos. You sit down and cry, that’s what you do. read more

The “haves” and “have nots” of fitness- BAL

worcester

From the first icy mornings of November Project, our fitness movement has pushed the limits on what “fitness” should look like.  Since the first days when Brogan and Bojan were up in Boston, freezing their tails off through the bitter New England winter, this “fitness movement” has been surely but slowly toeing the line on the way “fitness” looks in this country.  NP is not simply about having fun with your community, it is representative of a much larger conversation that needs to happen about the way people are permitted to be fit. It is that conversation that makes this movement so damn important. read more

One Last P.R Day : BAL

WIIISCONSIN NOTES:

  • Congrats on your P.R. I’m going to assume you P.R’d so if you didn’t, please just smile politely and roll with it.
  • Pat, Sydney and I have decided that P.R day needs to be shaken up a little bit. It’s everyone’s least favorite thing in the world and we know it, so we’re going to make some changes. We may be calling on a handful of you for insight and advice, so don’t be alarmed when we come knocking on your door with Mike’s Hard Lemonade and a bag of Hot Cheetos.
  • Recruit everything: So, I know hearing me say “recruit people,” sounds phony, so I apologize in advance. However, the fact of the matter is that NP is best when all sorts of crazy, ridiculous people are there. We don’t want normal runners, we want people who will take a stand for egg custard snow balls and argue the merits of binge watching Battle Star Galactica. Furthermore, you never know who may need NP but would never know it unless you drag their ass out of bed! Recruit everyone, the weirder and more diverse the tribe is the better.
  • In regards to the above point: 2 years into this thing November Project no longer belongs to Sydney, Pat and I. It never really did, but at this point it’s truly a community organization and what it looks like is really up to you guys. While the co-leaders will always be the ones with the final say on workouts and whether or not your tags can be diagonal (y’all are savages with a spray can in your hand), we want to hear from you guys. There are several ways to make this community truly your own, the biggest and best being your ability to populate it with your friends. SO RECRUIT EVERYONE! Likewise, come to us with suggestions, concerns, grievances and all sorts of baked goods.
  • Friday: Get yourself to the hill. It’s going to be wild and wonderful.IMG_8180
