The workout is called The Baby. Because #Raceman and #Relayman had a baby…and today’s workout is the product of such a mash-up. The basics are: you and a partner each do 2 sections at a time, leapfrogging each other around the stadium. You only have 2 sections to do, so you get to kind of have to do them as fast as you can. After all…it’s only two sections! You work darn hard, then have barely enough time to catch your breath (maybe) and shuffle over two sections to where your partner is finishing up their brutally fast 2 sections, and you do it again.
Sorry if you got lost (BOS)
This morning was a little tricky. It was the third of our four Mondays we’re partnering with the Esplanade Association and their Frost Fit series of workouts and events. And for all of these Frost Fit workouts — besides today– we’ve been at the Arthur Fiedler Statue. Today we met at the Esplanade Workout Station, which is way down close to the BU Bridge, and quite a hike away for anyone who showed up the Fiedler statue, expecting to see us at 6:29am.
That Was a Lot (BOS)
It’s not every Friday that you get up at 5am and run more than a handful of miles and do a full tour in the stadium and throw in some hills…and then toss in some 50 burpees. It’s definitely not every Friday.
It’s one Friday each month. Just one Friday. Just for the winteriest of months (Nov through March). And just because it’s a little crazy. A little unusual. A little fun. A good dose of team and hard work. Which is necessary, because it’s all that, and it is also A LOT. It’s a lot to do all at once. It’s a whole lot to commit to. It is a lot to finish once you’ve started. And it’s a lot to be proud of when you finish.
More Cowbell (BOS)
Despite Will Farrell, Christopher Walken, and Saturday Night Live making cowbells more famous than we could ever hope to be, we love to bring out the cowbell from time to time, to make a little ruckus in the stadium. Today’s shenanigans were #firedrills, during which everyone did a set of something other than climbing stairs. One set was 10 pushups, alternating with 10 squats.
Kick Monday in the Face (BOS)
I know some badass human beings who are tough, strong, fierce, hard core, and just really good. And even those people wake up on mornings like today in Boston–cold enough to be super undesirable to go outside, raining, not cold enough to make beautiful, fun snow, and overall shitty–and even they don’t want to do it. They don’t want to brave the elements. They don’t want to battle through the wind, rain, cold, puddles, wet feet, wet faces, wet bodies, just to get to the workout. And let’s not even think about if the co-leaders make you do full-body to the ground burpees, or a thousand pushups, or some other hand-freezing, misery-inducing movement. Even the toughest can stare right at those conditions…think about it just long enough…and decide to not do that.
"Thank You" Guest Blog by Adrienne Pereira (BOS)
Adrienne is one of those long-ago members of NP_BOS, who remembers the “early days” of the community being small…and starting to grow…and has a pretty cool perspective on how valuable it is to show up, and keep showing up, no matter how often or frequently. The community is powerful, and it’s always there. Thanks to Adrienne for the following reflection after showing up for PR day in January.
November Project People: Diane Kaplan Broomell (BOS)
This is the 8th installment of the regular feature on NP_BOS blog called November Project People (NPP). NP members interview other NP members, and we all get to know each other a bit better. #community
Interview of Diane Kaplan Broomell, by Abi Moldover.
I first met Diane shortly after I joined November Project, so about two and a half years ago. She was the first person I saw receive the Positivity Award.
Take a Trot (BOS)
How are you doing?
No, like really, how are you? I know, I know, “fuck yeah” to the question “ARE YOU GOOD?” Of course, yes that. But also, how are you?
It seems to be that time in the winter when winter feels long and the days aren’t yet really feeling longer, even though they’re getting longer, and everyone is talking about the cough/bug/”thing” that everyone else has…wondering if they’re coming down with it too. It’s that time when the wear and tear of cold, dark, sickness, and that drawn-out hangover of the holidays hits you hard.
January #PRday (BOS)
It’s official. New PRs for everyone in 2020. All you need to do is show up and race on the last Wednesday of the month, and you’re pretty damn likely to PR. And those Personal Records really mean something–they matter–when it comes to the journey of developing fitness.
Here’s how it tends to work: when you believe that you can make progress, like get faster or go farther, you feel way more motivated to keep working at the day-to-day, week-to-week effort of training, pushing through challenge, and getting fitness shit done. The more motivated you are, the more consistently you show up and work hard, and then the more likely you are to see results from a day like PRday, which amplifies your motivation to keep the whole cycle going.
The Sneaky Sebastian (BOS)
You know our old friend Sebastian, the 7 minutes of heaven burpees. That 420 seconds of glory. Well we made it just a little more fun and spread out today.
We raced the crosswalk lights on opposite islands at the Porter Square T stop. The sweet SIXTY seconds of intense movements, the dirty THIRTY seconds of burpees and then 30 seconds to get across the street to dive right back into it.
