The United State of November Project Women (LAX)

Hi! I’m Tara Wall and I’m a co-leader of the November Project here in Los Angeles, a #FREEfitness movement. We meet at 5:27/6:27 a.m. Wednesdays and 6:27 a.m. Fridays to sweat our way through an ever evolving, cardio-based, but geographically contained, workout. As a co-leader, I get to plan fun stuff, let you drop to the ground when I yell “burpees” during the middle of a Roxanne song, and most importantly, I get to watch each of you grow and evolve into stronger individuals both in and out of our workouts. Here at November Project, I see women of all walks of life: mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, friends, best friends, lovers, women who love running, women who hate running, bad assess, inspirations…and I get to see them all giving 100%, all the time.

So, when I found out that something really special is going down with the women in DC next Tuesday morning, I wanted to get our LA girls to join the fun. But hang on, what’s happening in DC? Here’s a blurb from DC co-leader Kaelen:

First Lady Michelle Obama took to her Insta account – you know the one, you check it first thing in the morning to see if your triceps are like her triceps, find out what veggies sprouted in the White House Kitchen Garden overnight, and read inspirational messages off graduation caps to get your day started? Oh, no? That’s just me? Cool. Let me update you – to announce, along with her Woman Squad (sometimes we refer to those people as “friends”), the first ever United State of Women Summit. No, no. Not United States. The United STATE of Women.

That’s right, the FIRST EVER United State of Women Summit. And DC is spicing up the already spicy and fierce summit by throwing down an all-women NP pop-up workout right outside of the convention. Great idea, right? Kaelen thought so; and we agree. Here’s Kaelen’s original post for DC, oh and Philly’s doing it too! Yeah Suzanne!

So, after we heard about DC’s all-women pop-up, FOMO got the best of us and we decided to make something special happen in LA too. Inspired by the wonderful women of our tribes on the East Coast, I’d like to welcome all the women of our tribe and the entire community of women in Los Angeles to join me in an ALL-WOMEN WORKOUT! Let’s dedicate a day to US; to run, sweat and simply be… because women are pretty great.

Here to talk more about the United STATE of Women and why we here in LA need to be excited about it is our very own legal advisor, political guru, feisty feminist and fellow NP_LAX tribeswoman, Danila Toscano.

Hi guys… errrrr gals I mean. I’m Danila. When Tara asked me to co-host this blog I nearly peed my pants, because whenever I get to drone on and on about social justice I lose all control. And even more so if it’s about an issue that affects not just me, but 50% of this planet’s population! Here are a few not-so-fun facts that our bad-ass women have to face on the daily and that will be major topics of discussion at the United State of Women Summit next week:

  • Women make only 79 cents to a man’s dollar [insert angry emoji face with smoke coming out of mouth here]: That’s 21 cents less per dollar that women have to use to pay for a race entry bib, student loans and to provide child-care. Ummmm…. Wtf? We want equal pay for equal work! Hollywood… we’re talking to you too…
  • One in five women is sexually assaulted while in college: Do I even need to hyperlink to a “Brock Turner, The Rapist, formerly known as a Stanford University Swimmer article?” Didn’t think so. Violence against women globally is a big problem. If you want your wife, daughter, sister, lover, bff to be safe, get on board with putting a stop to this nonsense!
  • Educational opportunities for girls are lacking: In the U.S., access to affordable child-care and fair maternity leave policies are shameful. Many women that would otherwise continue their education are forced instead to stay at home with their children or get a job to make ends meet. Globally, 62 million girls around the world are not in school. Is this a world you want to live in?
  • Women are woefully underrepresented in leadership and civic positions: When we look simply at the numbers, we just have to cringe. Women are only 14.6% of executive officers, 8.1% of top earners and 4.6% of Fortune 500 CEOs. In 2012, over 60% of women voted, yet females make up less than 20% of Congress, and the statistics for women of color are even more dismal. It’s high time we are allowed to break the shit out of those glass ceilings. And thanks for shattering the ever-impenetrable glass as the first major political-party nominee and first woman to be within striking distance to the Oval Office, Hillary!

The United State of Women Summit will be comprised of a bunch of doers and shakers, make the world-go-round type women. They’ll be addressing these issues and more. They’ll be facing barriers and looking for solutions. They’ll be returning to us with a game plan and calls to action. This is when we jump. This is where we act. We all know that NP is more than just a workout group. It’s a community, a village, a tribe. It’s our duty and responsibility to #dogood not just in our workouts, but also in this world. Let’s answer the call to action, be the voice of justice, the energy of change and #justshowup to declare loud and proud, equality for all. [Raises fist in the air.]

So, in the words of one of my favorite feminists of the moment, “Hey! I’ma keep running, ‘cause a winner don’t quit on themselves.” Thanks Bey… you always know how to drop that mic.

Oh, and Tuesday, we’ll be running.
