Another turn of the earth around the sun and here we are on the eve of Lunar New Year!! For those who don’t know, Lunar New Year celebrates the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year in many Asian cultures. There are many many amazing traditions that culminate in the Lantern Festival on the 15th and final day of the celebration. So we thought it would be great to spend some time together celebrating in our favorite way with some #freefitness! Let’s get hyped to celebrate the year of the dragon!!
It’s a big year for Dragons
In the Chinese zodiac, 2024 is the year of the dragon. The Chinese zodiac is a repeating 12-year cycle of animal signs and the Lunar New Year marks the transition from one animal to the other. So let’s bid the year of the rabbit farewell and say hello to the year of the dragon!

The Year of the Dragon Workout
Here we go!!! For this workout, you’ll repeat the same round twice but don’t worry you’ll have plenty to do. We’re celebrating each of the twelve animals of the zodiac, and since each one is unique we’ve got a unique move for each one. You’ll do each move for 1 minute before moving on to the next round. Make sure to take a few minutes in between the rounds so that you can catch your breath, hydrate, stretch, and give as much effort as you did the first time around!!
The Year of the Dragon Moves
Rat – Rat (aka bear) Crawls
Ox – Squat Hold
Tiger – Bird CATS
Rabbit – Bunny Hops
Dragon – Dragon Sit Ups (spread those WINGS!)
Snake – Slithers
Horse – Donkey Kicks
Goat – Mountain Climbers
Monkey – Break Dancers
Rooster – Single Leg Squats (but make sure to put your hands on your hips for your wings!)
Dog – Fire Hydrants
Pig – Down Pig Toe Taps (Give your tail a wiggle each rep!)
Nice work!!
No burnout on this one! Rather we’d like to encourage you to find out what your town is doing to celebrate Lunar New Year (assuming you aren’t already celebrating)! Many museums and cultural centers, and local libraries have a lot of really great things going on!!
