Meet Josh (YEG)

Josh, the bearded giant, a two wheeled aficionado, a runner, an Old 96er finisher, a friend, a member of this community, a Positivity Award recipient, and much more. Be it flying down some hills or crushing some stairs you’ll find Josh putting in the work and passing out words of encouragements to those around him. He embodies community and we are better with him around us. Do you have someone who just isn’t sure about coming out to a workout? Send them this blog! Meet Josh through his words below and then meet Josh in person at a workout, I promise you wont regret it.

Interestingly enough, on the same day both Jen and Nadim said I should write a blog post for NP to share my story, so I took that as a definite sign that I should! It has only been a year since I first started coming to November Project, and what a busy and life changing year it has been! To be honest, I’m not sure many would even recognize the Josh (100lbs heavier) I was a year and a half ago and I’m still getting used to the new Josh!

As long as I can remember I was overweight, hated physical activity, and loved my couch. Diets? Tried them. Personal trainers? Gave it a shot. I couldn’t commit long enough before depression, or emotional eating caught up with me. In May 2018 I attended my first ever November project workout after a friend invited me. It was the Commonwealth upper bowl challenge… oh that first workout. The sore legs lasted almost a week making me miss the Friday workout, but something else strange happened that first day. For once I enjoyed being physically active?!?!?!  Who would have thought??  That day was eye opening for me because as self conscious as I was about my lack of fitness, I felt accepted and a huge sense of belonging in this group of happy people! There were no judgements from anyone around me, and all I heard was “good job” and “great work” between peoples’ gasps for air in the upper bowl. I was hooked after that and every week I made it a challenge to climb more stairs and more hills. Now running has become something I turn to when I’m stressed, upset, or just plain bored. That is something I NEVER could have imagined saying before NP.

After this kickstart to a healthier lifestyle, eating properly started to fall into place, and I’ve begun to feel more confident. I’ve tried new sports and even completed some races!! Now I’m just hoping to finish the Old 96er this year [he did it 🙂 ]! For me this is all absolutely new territory and it is like there is a world of fitness I’ve missed out on my entire life, now is the time to get out there and try them all. So please, if you’re like me and want to try some new adventures/workouts, give me a shout. Or, if you ever want to talk fitness journeys, I love to hear other peoples stories, so just come find the tall bearded guy in the mornings.

Which leads me to a favourite workout day of mine, and blog post of recent. In the blog Rob talked about how every morning we can come across to each other as either inclusive, exclusive, or not being exclusive. This rang home for me as I’ve been in the last group. I’m never exclusive, but also never active at being inclusive. It helped me realize I should be making sure I’m giving others the same welcomeness and encouragement that I was shown. I’ve never been great at being the first person to start up a conversation, but I guess November Project has been pushing me out of my comfort zone in more ways than one!

As much as this is my story, it never would have become a reality without the amazing group of people that all of you are in November Project. Every tribe that I’ve visited in other cities carries the same love and joy for life and fitness, but NP Canada will always be home.

Thank you Jen, Andrew, Nadim, and Rob for your commitment and for sharing you’re love of running with us.

Josh
