Avocados, barriers, and mouth-to-ear ratios

Avocado Recruiting (YEG)

Edmonton is super cold. Like shake-your-bones cold. They also apparently like avocados there (?). At least Nadim does.

I experience the same thing that Nadim does quite often. I forget to listen. To try to understand the person before I sell them something. To understand their barriers, their fears, and the things that make them jump out of their beds, feet hitting the floor with fury, to run into their day, uninhibited and open to learning new things.

Those things are motivators. The first two things are barriers. And if we can find a way to ease those barriers, to make them a little smaller, and to highlight the things we have that they love… that’s how you catch the fish (i.e. new tribies).

I heard a quote in one of my classes about motivational interviewing – finding out what challenges people and keeps them from pursuing changes that they know are good for them. Everyone has ambivalence. Everyone has doubts. Everyone has fears. And if we don’t hear them, how do we ever speak to them?

Here’s the quote: “You have one mouth. You have two ears. Use them in that proportion.”

Listen first. Then listen some more.

Then speak.
