Dude, do you even play?

We cannot say it enough.  If you’re not going to Mondays you’re totally, really, like-seriously missing out.

If ever there was a day to remember what it feels like to play…to run around and just explore the shit out of a playground…to feel like a grown-up adult with a total child’s-mind…to live that hashtag we throw around all the time #AdultRecess, it was today.

There’s this baller playground out at the tip of Charlestown, in the Thomas Menino Park which is adjacent to the Spaulding Rehab center, overlooking Boston Harbor and the amazing skyline of Boston.  We took full advantage of it today.  The workout was called “Explore Your Own Adventure.”  Which is a combo of that old school 80’s book series “choose your own adventure” and the catchy TNF phrase we try to live in full force “never stop exploring.”  The basics were that you could choose your fitness today by making up your own stuff for the first 10 min, and then by selecting from some options we threw at you for the second session.  But the exploring part was all about seeing what you could do.  Finding out what’s fun?  What gets your body to move?  What elevates your heart rate?  What is an interesting and unique way –or even just a different way– to use the stuff we see and walk by every day?  Can these things truly be fun, playful, AND give us a killer workout?  Well as my relatives back in Minnesota would say, you betcha!

It was so much fun that after the workout was over, we stuck around and kept playing–kept inventing and exploring new ways to move on that playground.  It made me remember how freaking fun movement is.  It doesn’t always have to be a part of a training plan, or moving us toward some fitness goals (though goals are good too!), or measured and counted for reps and sets.  Sometimes just moving in a way that feels good, that lets us be curious and to discover the environment around us, is both good for our bodies and our souls. It’s called play and dude, do you even play anymore?

So, my conclusion from this morning is that you can either start “exploring your own adventure” more on your own, or #JustShowUp on more Mondays and we’ll do it together.  And no one will judge you if you do both.

Next workout is Wednesday at Harvard Stadium.  See you kids there.
