Thank you, MSP

I’ve tried tying up all my feelings and memories into this blog post a few dozen times. I’ve decided it’s impossible. November Project has given me enough good times for several decades’ worth of recollecting and memory swapping. And I know that those decades will be filled with friends who have come into my life because November Project brought them here. My world has collided with the most brilliant, beautiful humans, and I am forever grateful.  read more

NP MSP Bingo! (MSP)

Introducing… NP MSP BINGO!

What: A week-long exploration of beloved NP MSP workout locations.

When: Monday, May 25 – Sunday, May 31

We have created a one-of-a-kind, week-long bingo game featuring 25 NP MSP workout spots (well, 24 and a free space, of course). Looking Back, Looking Ahead: Introducing Office Hours (MSP)

It’s been a good year so far. I’m feeling nostalgic, so for kicks, here’s a list that I’m calling “November Project Minneapolis 2019 in Six Chronological Moments, According to Nat.”

  • Tubing at Theo Wirth. Our 5th birthday in the frigid, pre-Polar Vortex cold.
  • The Polar Vortex, AKA “Layer Up and Just Do the Damn Thing.”
  • E Rolf’s first bounce.
  • Ben’s last bounce/Week of Wonder (this is a million moments in one).
  • Beach Day. There’s just something about Beach Day.
  • Yesterday’s sweaty, sweaty Sixer.

The common denominator? You. NP MSP, you are the happiest, most energizing people I know. These moments are sources of strength, goodness, connection, energy, and courage.  read more

The Workout is the Gateway: Guest Blog by Sarah S. (MSP)

November Project: The Workout is the Gateway

Here, meet NP MSP’s resident pro footballer, Sarah Stuhr (they/them/theirs), and learn what got them to their first workout (spoiler alert: it involves tags) and why they just keep comin’ back.

As I come up on my one-year anniversary of just showing up to November Project/Minneapolis, I’ve been reflecting on my time with the group and a time in my life when I wouldn’t have been…couldn’t have been…anywhere at 6:27a.m.. read more

Before Coffee (MSP)

In a poem written, as I understand, mostly during the workout itself, Lauren shared what moves them to show up. Snaps be damned, this slam had us all yelling, “FUCK YEAH!” Thank you, Lauren. We’re glad you’re here.

Before Coffee

by Lauren Johnson

The alarm buzzes, and all is still dark.
I leave my girlfriend in bed, fumble for some clothes I laid out,
and sneak out with my bike.
I have all of 15 minutes on the ride over
to get psyched.

Circle up, move in, and bounce
Wait for the rallying cry:

Y'all good?
     Fuck Yeah
Because even if you're not good you're here
     Fuck Yeah
Because sometimes you're hopelessly lonely
and you just want to put your phone down
and be surrounded by people
     Fuck Yeah
Because people are at least trying to know your name and will tell you good job no matter how you're doing
     Fuck Yeah
Because sometimes you're about to marry
the girl you love, which your younger self never thought possible
and you need somewhere in the city
you can go to yell loudly
     Fuck Yeah

Because cancer is slowly wearing away at someone we love
and God doesn't show up
But we do — As sure as the sun rises in the East,
some yahoos will be running hills and yelling
EVERY Wednesday of the whole year

From beast mode to portrait mode
From burnouts to whiteouts

Whether you're a couch potato
or a couch potato chip
Or you workout so hard that Wednesday is your rest day
NP is a place where we can be proud to show off our sweaty bodies like no one's watching

Except that everyone is watching and your body,
covered in sweat,
or with frozen sweat-icicles hanging off of your face,
will definitely end up in photos on Facebook
Sweat-icicle hair
Don't care
Woke up like this
Showed up like this

hashtag just show up
Forget that it sounds like a Nike slogan knockoff and you're not on board with nonconsensual hugs

Come run through sprinklers like you're a kid again

The fitness is free
and we'll be here

The Missing Piece: Guest Blog by Jay

One to two times a week for the last 4 months I’ve been asked a question.

It’s 6:27 AM. I’m outside, and it’s extremely cold. I’m not in bed. I’m about to participate in my least-favorite pastime: running. I’ve hugged a few people, and I’m low-key not much of a hugger :).

The question, “Do you feel good?”

My optimistic response: maybe.

I’m frugal. I would love a gym membership, but I don’t let it be part of the budget. My yoga mat circuits of burpies, pull-ups, single leg deadlifts, and little throwing of the kettlebell in the cramped one-bedroom apartment were getting very old. I needed something else.

My years after college have been a bit lonely and challenging for me. Not in a depressed, miserable way, but in a, “I’m missing something” kind of way. No longer living with my best friends. No longer surrounded by people similar to me working towards the same thing. I rent in a neighborhood full of apartments, making a challenge of meeting neighbors. I choose truancy in regards to church, a place where community is often found. I don’t go to bars too often (when I do go, it’s with someone I know and not to meet people). I feel very vulnerable talking about this, but I’m assuming this is all too common and needs to be talked about more in a world with ever increasing mental health concerns. We’re social animals seeking connection and too often that need is unmet and often exacerbated in the toxic, polarized social climate that is 2018.

So when I read about a group of people that gets together to run hills/stairs and some other workouts outside for free, it sounded great. November Project has exceeded my expectations. It’s become one of my favorite parts of the week. Do I have a new best friend? No, not yet at least. Was I looking for one? No, not really. Do I know more than half the people’s names yet? Probably not.

Am I faster? Yes. Am I stronger? Yes. I have found a community who SHOWS UP and who pushes/encourages each other, not only in workouts, but also in day-to- day life. November Project has helped meet my social and physical needs.

Getting to the top of stairs during a workout. I look down, and my unemotional self gets the goose bumps. Not from cold weather, but from the high fives, the shrieking, the laughter, and humans communing with others and moving in their natural environment with the sun coming up. It’s the magic hour.

The tribe’s answer, “Fuck yeah.” WE feel good.

Story time! (MSP)

November Project Minneapolis is quickly approaching its fourth birthday. Four whole years!! On Saturday, January 27th, we are throwing a party to celebrate. You can expect typical party things: food, beverages, music, nostalgic photo montage, meaningful and meaningless awards. But most importantly, this party is about YOU and your stories.

You are invited to share your NP experiences during the open mic portion of the party. How did you hear about November Project? What does NP mean to you? What is the funniest thing you’ve seen happen at a workout? Favorite workout? Most awkward bounce? Who at NP has made an impact on your life?

Just like every workout, come as you are. Share what you feel. If you are interested in telling a story, think a bit about what you’d like to say over the next few weeks. We can’t wait to celebrate four years with you all.
