From quitter to (q)onfident – Guest blog [MTL]

Jemal is a PhD student studying neuroscience in Montréal, originally from Ethiopia. Despite the 6 months of snow and ice here, he is a skillful runner, an excellent high-fiver and an adventurous NP member. He took his first trip to the United States for this year’s inaugural Snow Globe event! Jemal greets everyone with a sincere smile and easy laughter. He is an essential part of our Wednesday morning NP crew. Jemal, we’re so happy you’re here… even if you’re late 😉

The Speed Project 5.0 [MTL]

Our favourite Frenchman, Laurent Caudrelier, is part of a 10-person team running The Speed Project in March. Laurent is an impressive runner, cyclist, and all-around powerhouse of good vibes. As the clock ticks down, we wanted to know more about his experience taking on this ambitious goal. Laurent answered all 5.5 of my questions below. I think you’ll appreciate the balance of smart strategy and humourous honesty that Laurent brings to this challenge.  read more

Introducing Silvana – Guest blog [MTL]

Silvana has been a consistent member with NP Montreal for over a year. She us well known for her exuberant laughter, warm smile, and early morning enthusiasm. She has a personality like caffeine, perking up all those around her and as a co-lead, I know I can count on her to keep the vibe high each week. In today’s blog, Silvana tells her story of how she came to NP and what it has come to mean to her. She reminds us that we all come to NP for different reasons, but once there, we all belong.

Today I forgot to wear pants [MTL]

My upstairs neighbour plays jazz guitar… with his amp up… usually around 11pm (or 23h as they say in the Q.C.). Sometimes that makes sleeping tricky. Last night, I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, wishing a number of ills on a stranger I have yet to meet. My Wednesday morning wakeup call is a non-negotiable because I need to show up for the people that show up for me at November Project. I take this responsibility very seriously, which is why today, I forgot to wear pants to the workout.

I’m really bad at math [MTL]

Yesterday, I went on a run. I planned 8 kilometers, because this is Canada and that’s how we do things. I’m in the countryside which runs on a grid. I thought that grid was 1kms by 2kms… I was wrong. My 8km turned into 14km, because I didn’t notice until I was halfway through my route that the grid is actually in MILES. Dammit. Canada. Get. It. Together. read more

Shame, shame, shame [MTL]

Last week, I had a shaming experience at a gym… right after it made my stomach drop and my throat prickle, it put me in to a white hot fury. Nobody makes me cry, but me, dammit! Fitness via running, lifting, head-standing, meditating, etc. is a pursuit that makes me feel powerful and empowered. It also makes me feel nice and human, fallible and in progress. So when that feel good vibe got messed with, I got pretty indignant. I thought that perhaps I might share in hopes of starting/continuing a conversation that I’ve had with numerous friends and community members. My aim is that we get a bit more curious about how we show up to fitness and for those we fitness with. read more

Dressing for snow [MTL]

  • an extended response to Mia Fredricks (NP New Orleans)

In discussing the upcoming NP Snow Globe event (previously Snow Summit – in Syracuse, NY this January 18-20, 2019), some prospective participants identified that dressing for a winter event felt daunting. Now, I’m from the prairies where we like to extol our “dry cold”, but the fact of the matter is, I’d rather run in the sunshine, dressed in shorts, with a cool spring breeze. But I live in Canada, so those ideal running conditions have a restricted window. read more

AirBNP: traveling with NP [MTL]

This summer I had the pleasure of driving from Montreal to Edmonton. I dreamed up this solo road trip in the midst of a research internship in Ethiopia, looking to explore some new cities on my home continent. In plotting my course, I assumed I would stop in Chicago (on a Wednesday) and Winnipeg (on a Friday) so that I could attend their November Project workouts. I specifically shifted other legs of my journey to make it to these locations in time to work out with a bunch of strangers… except they don’t feel like strangers. read more

Tricks AND treats [MTL]

Today was an excellent day to be a kid again, embrace adult recess, appreciate our bodies, and strengthen our community… all before 8 a.m.! What a thrill! For Halloween, the tribe showed up in costume this morning and it got me introspecting into all we get from CHOOSING to be a part of November Project. read more

In defence of autumn [MTL]

The weather is getting cooler, and I don’t need to remind you that the days are getting darker (literally, not literarily). I find myself stating the obvious each day, and it’s stealing my joy of the wonder that is fall time, people! It’s majestic, and it’s beautiful, and I’m going to convince you to embrace this and all that is to come! Because there are no bad months, and no bad seasons (and while I respect your right to have preferences and your individual opinion) – Autumn is awesome and here’s a list to prove it. read more
