Just Show Up… and Show Out

This blog post is brought to you by November Project Atlanta tribe member Allison Lerer… she’s a hype lady. Always there to help out a tribe member in need, checking in with regular texts if she knows you’ve had a rough week, cheering you on at a race. Here she is!

So when I was asked to write a blog post for November Project Atlanta, it was pretty nerve-racking for me as I am not much for writing and blogging (this is my first blog). However, after my race yesterday I was inspired on a different level that I wanted to share with whoever reads this. read more

Peachtree Road Race & July Events for the Win! (ATL)

June was a crazy month. I mean, we had a stretch of 7 days of straight NP ATL action. So in July, we’re taking a step back and slowing it down.

…just kidding. It’s already the first week and we have events happening non-stop!

We kick off the first week of July with a handful of events around one of the world’s largest 10ks – the Peachtree Road Race. If you’re in town visiting ATL for the 4th, running the race, or cheering at the race, come work out with us!

July 3

Peachtree Road Race Expo | 12 -2 PM | Georgia World Congress Center

We’re teaming up with Back On My Feet Atlanta, who has graciously allowed us to work at their expo booth during their Treadmill Challenge. From 12-2pm, we’ve got a group of NOVEMBER PROJECT runners on the treadmill running to raise money for BOMF. If you don’t know much about them, they are a great, national organization that combats homelessness through the power of running, community support, and essential employment and housing resources. You’ll hear more about them soon, because we’re hosting a workout with them later in July!

If you can’t run but want to donate money to their cause, here’s the link to our page, listed under Tribe Leader Alexa’s name.

Stein Esser – NP Came During a Time in my Life When I Really Needed It (ATL)

The below is a guest blog post from one of our longtime members, Stein Esser. He won ATL tribe’s Positivity Award, and has an amazing story to share.

This week, I won the November Project Atlanta Positivity Award for being So Chill, So Popular™.

If you had told me a year ago that I would win something for being a positive influence on others around me (and have a catch phrase), I would never have believed you because I was in the midst of a particularly brutal, year long bout of depression. I’ve touched on it in a previous blog post,=&0=&but In light of recent events with the passing of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade, I feel like I would be doing a disservice to this award if I didn’t share my own history with chronic depression.

I should first say that I am incredibly fortunate to have grown up with a loving family and friends. I had an amazing childhood and upbringing. If you ask people that know me, they’d say I’m kind of an oddball. I’ve always loved comedy and goofy humor. But at the same time, depression is something that I think I’ve always dealt with in some capacity. For me, I think it emanates from a deep fear of rejection and failure. As a pretty introspective person, those feelings of self-doubt could snowball into a constant barrage of negativity. As a result, I’d go through periods of depression that could last any amount of time. If I had to describe it, it’s like constantly hating yourself so much that your body hurts and you’d rather feel nothing. And so, to get by, you check out mentally and emotionally. While all of that is going on internally, to the outside world, you’re either a robot that’s going through the motions or an asshole that’s projecting negativity. It really fucking sucks.

Depression is really hard to talk about. The stigma of it all puts you in a shame cycle. Ideally, you could say, “Hey, my brain feels broken. Who can relate? WHOOOOO” (shout out to Logic). I’ve always been fortunate to have had people support me and help pull me back out of my depressive episodes.  They may not have known it, but their simple act of kindness or just reaching out really went a long way.

I am so grateful for all of the meaningful connections I’ve made and positive experiences I’ve felt this past year. I feel like my genuine self again and am more present than I can remember. Depression is something that I don’t think will ever leave me, but it’s more manageable. A philosopher named Sean Francis Early once said “Fuck them, Be you.”  For me, that’s a powerful message about being true to oneself and telling that negative self-doubt shit to fuck off. To win the Positivity Award means so much to me not only because of all I’ve been through but also because I’ve made it a goal to reciprocate those good vibes.  When a person seems checked out/low/sad/tired/depressed, just be there for them. It matters.

Here’s Stein’s speech that he gave for the Positivity Award.

Global #SportsBraSquad Day | 9 AM  | Big Peach Running Store Midtown

Join us at 9am on Sunday, June 24th at Big Peach Midtown for a 3 mile fun run and/or walk to celebrate Global #SportsBraSquad day! The #SportsBraSquad started as a way for women to ditch their shirts along with their insecurities, and show the world what strength looks like. In 2015, the National Eating Disorders Association found that 70% of women don’t like their bodies. 70%! That’s a disappointing and frustrating statistic and the only way we can combat the self-loathing and hatred women feel towards their bodies is to change the way we see strength.

But ditching your shirt for the first time can be terrifying! That’s why on June 24th, Sports Bra Squads all over the world will be coming together to show the world that our bodies are strong as hell!Do you need to run in a sports bra? NO WAY! Only if you’d like to!

#GlobalRunningDay – 175 Strong! (ATL)

You guys…. WE DID IT!

Through a collaboration with 3 of Atlanta running community’s top ambassadors, we rang in #GlobalRunningDay with more than 175 people!

First, we have to thank our partners for this event because we couldn’t have done it without them! Thanks to your strong communities in Atlanta – Atlanta Track Club and Big Peach Running Co.! Also, we had a huge group from Back on my Feet Atlanta come out. We are so stoked and can’t wait for future collaborations!

This is what November Project is all about – working together and building a community centered around FREE fitness that is inclusive for everyone, all ages, all fitness levels. For #GlobalRunningDay it seemed like a no brainer to do a staple NP Sunrise 6k.

Big Peach, the experts at hosting races in ATL, planned a 6k route around Georgia Tech. 6k=3.72 miles. WHY? Because why do people run 5ks? You know NP likes to be different. As the Sunrise 6k can sometimes be a competition, all who recorded the route on Strava will see their time –> https://www.strava.com/routes/13286724.

Thanks to the incredible pull of Atlanta Track Club spreading the word, the run even got a shout-out in Runner’s World!

The bounce was EPIC… we didn’t bother that we would potentially wake up people at 6am. (You live in the city, and this is one day a year!) After that, the group took off for their run (we were so big we had to go off in WAVES like a race. #goals)

As everyone finished, we brought them in with the cheer tunnel!

The day ended with a presentation of the Positivity Award to someone who’s life has changed through November Project… Stein Esser. We’ll get him to write up a blog post so he can shine in the spotlight… he’s a pretty hilarious guy!

See all the photos from the morning here.

Bring Back the 80s! (ATL)

Wisconsin Notes

ATL Tribe took a time machine to the 80s this morning with an 80s inspired aerobics workout!

Tribe Leader Alexa looked like she literally time traveled from 1985, wearing her mom’s neon jacket and normal attire that owns and wears on a regular basis.

Christian AKA Richard  Simmons had a bleach incident with his afro and it turned out yellow.

Kyle wore a crop top.

There were plenty of thrusts incorporated into “Love Shack.”

“Relax” was the perfect song for glute bridges. There were also pelvic thrusts.

It turns out more people were born in the 80s than we realized.

Ben did birthday push-ups and was talented enough to blow out a candle at the same time.

In other news…

The Positivity Award was given. Ben Nantasai was the winner for being an incredible, dedicated tribe member! He ran through his first marathon with a fractured foot! Then continued to show up to workouts and create an #injurydeck.

We got a #traverbal from Jeremy from NP Chi – hopefully he only brings back rad praise to his tribe.

Hungry for more pics? Check out the album.

How to Run a Kick Ass Cheer Station (ATL)

The November Project ATL tribe ran what was possibly the best cheer station ever seen at an Atlanta race. (Okay, WE think so, there was no official award.) We spent 5 hours spreading good vibes and cheering on runners for Atlanta’s biggest spring race, the Publix Georgia Half and Full Marathon. The runners loved it and we were greeted with smiles, words of thanks, high fives and more! Thanks to all the tribe members that came out to help us make it a memorable race for everyone – Ben, Stein, Niamh, Julia, Andrea, Emma, Maddie, Tim, Gabi, Dara, Alexa, Danielle, Courtney and Chris (WHO CAME ON HIS BIRTHDAY!!)

CONGRATS to all our Tribe members who ran!

Half marathon – Coco (PRed today wooo!!), Courtney, Stu, Shauna, Carol

Full marathon – Andreas (first marathon), Ben (first marathon), Colin (first marathon), Allison, Casey, Jessica, Matt Taylor

So here’s how we did it, with the help of our many other NP tribes and their ideas…

Music

We have an epic speaker, and had tunes rockin’ all day! 90s hip hop, house music, 80s jams… the playlists kept rotating out. As long as we could dance to it, we kept the music bumpin’.

Costumes

Tribe leader Alexa just happens to have a chicken costume that she likes to bust out on random occasions. This was the perfect opportunity. A little clever signage kept everyone laughing – “I just want to cross the road” (because WHY did the chicken cross the road.) Tribe member Ben Kora wore his “hearts” suit with the sign “I like Fast women.” He also put his number on his abs…we’ll see what happens with his dating life!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BgeM2bSHjTy

Funny Posters

Back to the posters… We stole some pretty funny (and punny) ideas from Kelly Roberts (SUP!!!) Our “Did you poop?” poster was a success and we actually tallied a handful runners based on their responses… a majority DID poop before the race, but surprisingly almost 20 people didn’t. HOW can you even run??

Treats

The race did have plenty of rest stops, but we wanted to offer fun treats to racers. Twizzlers were especially popular for the half marathoners. We even had a few takers for the beers. Jelly beans and Swedish fish in little dixie cups are other good options.

Piñata

A few of the NP tribes had a great idea for a piñata. The poster “PR Piñata, it’s a big hit!” was indeed a hit with the runners! We encouraged them to take a swing as they ran by.

Good Vibes

Overall, we were LOUD! We read the names off the bibs of as many runners as we could so that they felt like we personally were cheering them on. We gave high fives to anyone that would come near us and we yelled until we got hoarse. For other spectators, we had flyers ready because… #alwaysrecruiting.

We saw random people taking photos of us. Runners took photos of us. We’re not sure if they ever will remember when we yelled “We’re with November Project ATL!” or if they saw our shirts. But we felt good being out, spreading the word about free fitness!

20 Seconds (Turned) On – Partners Tabata (ATL)

Our original Valentine’s Day Partner Workout was obviously too easy for Christian – a classic speed dating circuit, where partners would switch off every certain number of times. You’d only get about 30 seconds to 1 minute before finding a new partner. You’d switch exercises, so your muscles wouldn’t fatigue.

But no.. Christian wanted to do a Tabata workout. If you’ve never heard of Tabata, it’s a HIIT (high intensity interval workout) where you do 8, yes 8, rounds of the SAME exercise. 20 seconds on, 10 seconds rest.

The workout went down like this:

We had 6 exercises planned, but time ran short, so we only got through 5 rounds. We had a photo shoot to do after all at the end, so going over was not an option! (see part 2.)

We made everyone partner with someone they didn’t know that well each time, and during each exercise we gave a topic of conversation. You kept the same partner for each exercise, so everyone ended up 5 partners and hopefully learned 5 new things about 5 different people. After one full cycle, 8 rounds, of the exercise, everyone jogged to the end of the field and back for “recovery.”

Exercise 1 – Bojans

Topic of conversation – Worst First Date

Exercise 2 – Salsa Lunges

Topic of Conversation – Favorite Rom Com (or any genre) Movie

Exercise 3 – Shoulder Tap Push Ups

Topic of Conversation – Dream Honeymoon Destination, or Favorite Vacation Spot

Exercise 4 – Partner 1 holds out hands in a squat, Partner 2 does high knees hitting the hands

Topic of Conversation – What is Your Spirit Animal?

Exercise 5 – High Five Sit Ups

Topic of Conversation – What is Your Dream Job?

At the end of the workout, an anonymous NP ATL tribe member brought roses for everyone. We announced our NP ATL couples – Danielle and Steven, Sandra and Michael,  Gabi and Tim, and (while half was not here) Niahm and Joe. For our singles, we offered to take “model pics” that they can use for dating profiles. We did have a few takers!

On this day, we remind everyone, all you need is LOVE! (Especially the lady who came down from her apartment building and yelled at us about being loud and cheering by saying “Who is running this show?!” It’s a workout lady. Chill.)

Tribe Member Spotlight- Keith Steenlage (ATL)

**TRIBE MEMBER SPOTLIGHT**
Keith Steenlage

=&0=&: Lake Forest, Illinois

=&1=& Ponce City Market, Atlanta

=&2=&: I grew up on a farm in Wisconsin. When I was 14, my Dad suffered a serious injury in a farm accident. Faced with the prospect of losing the farm, my 16-year-old brother and I dropped out of school to take over my father’s farming responsibilities. We also both got full time jobs to supplement the farm income and support our six younger siblings.

Without an education, I didn’t have many opportunities when I turned 18. But knowing I needed to do something with my life, I applied for admission into the Diesel & Heavy Equipment Program at the local technical college. Without the required prerequisites, I was immediately rejected but I literally begged until they made an exception and let me in.

The next summer, in between the two years of diesel school, I was working at the local John Deere dealership as a mechanic. One day, several weeks before the end of summer, I was laid off without any warning because they had hired another full-time mechanic. I was devastated because I was a very good mechanic, but I knew that crying about it wasn’t going to change anything. Instead, I focused on moving forward.

A few days later someone who knew me well said, “You like history and politics, and you love to argue. You should go to law school.” At that moment law school became my new goal, even though I knew that they didn’t let junior high dropouts into college, let alone law school. I also set a goal of someday working as a lawyer for John Deere or Caterpillar, so I could put my mechanical background to good use.

Over the course of the following 12 months, I finished diesel school and completed four years of high school through correspondence courses. I then applied for admission at the University of Wisconsin-La Cross (a local university) and was once again immediately rejected because of my low admission test scores and lack of requisite high school classes. “No” wasn’t an opinion for me and my goals, so I needed to find a way to change their minds.

Several years earlier my older brother had taken the GED and was admitted on probation at the same university. Fortunately for me, he had done very well and had just been accepted for early admission into Yale Medical School. Armed with this information, I marched into the office of the same Admission Director who had rolled the dice with my older brother and begged him to take a chance on me as well.

Four years later I graduated from that university and was accepted into law school at Rutgers. Today I am an Assistant General Counsel at John Deere.
