Somehow, some way

Grateful for So Cal sunrises

Grateful. Over the next month you’re going to hear about all the things that people are grateful for. It is one of my favorite times of year, and something that I wish carried over throughout the rest of the year. Today I’m going to share something that I am grateful for, and it is not related to November Project! Nope, today is about where it all began for me. My mom. Specifically, the undying optimist trait that rubbed off on me.

Things weren’t always easy growing up, but I’ll never forget what my mom would say to us. “I don’t know how, but some way somehow, it always works out.” And it did. No matter what bind we were in, it always wound up being ok. We still had each other, we still had food to eat, and we still had a roof over our heads. Sure we would fight sometimes, tomato sandwiches were a staple in our diet, and yea we lived with my uncle and his family for a few months, but my mom never gave up. She never backed down from the belief that things would work out.

Yesterday, I had a pretty rough phone call from my mom. She called to let me know that she had lost her job. The past few years she has been in a pretty big funk, and I wasn’t sure if that optimism was still there for her. Before we hung up she said, “Jess, it’s like you always say. ‘Mom, I don’t know how or why, but things always work out in the end’.” Excuse me, what are you talking about, is what I thought. I reminded her that that was what she would tell us when we were kids. I could hear the smile in her voice when she said, “well then I guess I taught you well.”

So today, I am grateful for the unwavering belief that somehow, some way it’ll all be ok. The road isn’t always the smoothest, and sometimes there are some big ass hills to tackle, but that’s why we have Hillvember. Either way, no matter the road, we always get to where we’re going.
