Sh-Sh-Shake It Off

For our first official workout in 2015, the Chiberian Tribe made good on its #weatherproof promise. We took on those -17 degrees of wind chill (that’s in fahrenheit for the celsius aware among us) to stay true to our goals of maintaining a fit lifestyle and supportive community no matter the conditions. It was miserable and magical and sexy, all at the same time.

Now here’s the thing about these first weeks of January. They force you to take a moment, reflect on those moments in the previous year(s) when you might have had setbacks, or occasions for grudges. It is a time when you decide whether you’re going to let them hold you back from what you want to accomplish, or whether you will shake it off and start fresh. Today’s workout was oriented around one such occasion when someone faced a unique challenge of their own.

The year was 2009, and T-Sizzle aka Taylor Swift was on her own #worldtakeover tour. She had just won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Music Video by a Female Artist. Yeah, that’s a pretty big deal. How could such a wonderful moment go wrong? Cue Kanye West. We have included the following video to refresh your memory.

Today in the early frozen air, we used the Kanye/Tay Tay debacle as inspiration for some frostbite fitness. One partner stood at the rails of a random platform we found in the wooded area by the lake, and did rail-squats in an attempt to achieve those gazelle-like stems of Ms. Swift. The other ran as if they were Kanye when he beelined his way to the stage. Upon meeting up with your partner, you joined hands, squatted down, jumped back up, and bumped shoulders while shouting “KANYE!” as loud as your chilled vocal chords would allow. Now we like to think that Kanye and TSwizzle have since calmed any feud between them, and if they ever came to a November Project workout they would hug it out and join hands for some hoistees. It’s all about moving forward, right? I think I just thought of a recruitment goal for 2015…

Now this idea of moving forward brings me back to my original thought about these first weeks of the New Year. How will you let external events shape what you do, and how you treat people? Will you let cold temperatures rob you of your Moon Man Moment of fitness glory? Or will you warm yourself up by dancing like you’re 22 instead? Will you allow past events to dictate where you advance, or will you shake it off?
