If you joined our November Project family in the past year, than you probably don’t. These are the sign-in sheets, and they were used by each location to record individual scores from the workouts. Why did we go through all the trouble of recording few hundred chicken scratched, ineligible names and times, transfer them into a spreadsheet and then upload them into the blog post? There are a few reasons…
#1 Tracking our progress. As you’ve heard many times, November Project was a google doc that BG and I started as a way to track our fitness progress while training during the Winter of 2011. When more people started joining us we used manual sign-in sheets to continue this trend. The idea was that someone would be able to go back through the blog posts and see their week-to-week fitness improvement.
#2 Earning Your Swag. From pizza to running shoes, we used to give gear to people if if they just showed up to the workout. But in order to know exactly who was at the workout, we had to record names.
#3 Attendance Bragging. You can count the heads in each group photo but someone always leaves early.. Ballpark estimate is one way to do it, but knowing the exact number is much better.
So we collected sheets and sheets of names and times for way too long until one day we just decided that it’s too much work. We knew that the next step would be to develop a digital way of keeping track but neither BG nor I had the digi-skills to make this happen over night.
Enter Tony DiPasquale, NP_BOS member, a Northeastern University Husky with a formal education in computer related things. Tony offered to build a digital sign-in sheet that could eliminate clipboards, papers, frozen pens, and the odd hieroglyphs our members came up with each week. After many conversations, meetings, and emails, Tony built mobile and desktop accessible NP Tracker that is now available to all NP locations.
This tracker is designed to:
– Have NP members sign waivers. If you’ve ever signed up for a local 5k or an indoor gym membership, you’ve filled one of these out. We’re required by our insurance to ask all members to accept terms and conditions and the tracker is an easy and painless way of doing that.
– Make our Co-leaders’ lives easier by announcing the workouts and locations ahead of time. Instead of looking for a blog post, Tweet, or a Facebook announcement for the next gathering, you can now access all the workout data in one place.
– Allow members to record their times, number of laps, and PR’s where applicable, see how they stack up next to the people in their tribe, neighboring tribes, and access historical data to track their progress. There is something really powerful at looking at your score from the first workout and comparing it to your score a year later.
– Take verbals. We want to know that you’re coming to the next workout. Your friends want to know that you’re coming to the next workout. So “drop your verbal” and set that alarm. Note: you can not retrieve your verbal 8 hours before the workout. You’ve been warned!
– Win cool things. We may run attendance based incentives in the future just like we did back in 2012-2013. Signing up and keeping track in our new system is the only way you’ll be on our radar to win anything ever (other than the #PositivityAward – Which, for the time being, isn’t a part of the tracker).
How are we using information that you share?
Even though one option to sign up for a tracker is via email (the other one is Facebook), we will never use your emails to contact you for any reason or to sell your contact info to third parties. We think that our inboxes are filled with shit we don’t care about, so adding more shit to your inbox is not our intention.
Information as it relates to workouts will be used and analyzed to make the November Project experience, a better one. We’ll gather data to create maps of the locations that we visited, to calculate interesting things like how many times we collectively climbed to the moon and back, to figure out how long it takes a person to drop 5 minutes of their tour of the stadium on average, and other similar analysis. That information (without identifying anyone by name) may be used in a scientific study, or a presentation, but we see that as a use of information to better the humanity and as something that can genuinely help people study this free fitness phenomenon that we are all experiencing first hand.
