Quick anecdote: This morning right before the 5:30 workout Steve asked me, “How do you want to split into groups? Last time was by DC Neighborhoods. We could do favorite ice cream flavor?” I said, “STEVE we ALREADY did that one TOO! Last summer, I remember it!” And then Steve said to me, (the plot is totally about to thicken, wait for it…) “But, Kaelan, do you remember who was in your group? Do you remember their names?” I said, “WHOOAAAA STEVE.”
If you know the name of 511 tribe members, the rest of this blog post is probably just a snooze fest for you, but if you, for some CRAZY reason, don’t know 511 names, please, read on.
(CRAZY reasons may include, but are not limited to: You were a solid winter tribe member and now when people just leave their buffs at home and show their faces off, you’re like who even are you?? OR 511 is a LOT. Like a LOT a LOT. OR you don’t have Facebook so when you get home you can’t asap add the people you met that AM and commit them to memory, it’s hard. OR you’re brand spankin’ new to NP!)
We are a community. We are wide-reaching, loving, encouraging, and supporting. We are a flash-mob community where the fitness flashes, but the community sticks. Or something like that. I guess what I mean is, no matter the day, location, or logistics of the workout, the community will always be there. There’s something to be said for hearing someone cheer, “Yeah ladies, you got this.” It works, it motivates. We move when we hear it. There’s something else entirely to be said for, “Yeah Maria! Push it to the top,” or “Alright Alex, looking strong!” Hearing your own name, said by someone who is working right along next to you rocks. They’re already busting their butt through their workout and want to get YOU to keep going, get moving, to race it out, push yourself, and push them. Remember the names you learned this morning, hold those people accountable for getting to the workout, you might be the difference in their 5:50am decision to hit snooze or roll out of bed. Cheer them on, push them harder. They’ll cheer and push right back. Cause that’s what communities do. Or at the very least, what free fitness communities do.
I promise you, this is not just an elaborate plan to get people to yell YEAH KAELAN YOU GO GIRL WORK IT KAELAN. (Where my mint-chip peeps at?) Community is FUN. Gotta get to know the city that is fitter (dominating those charity miles, BOOM) than the other city. #FITTERCITY
AND, PS. Don’t be afraid to re-introduce yourself to people. Just do it with a hug, cause really you already know them.
ALSO, PS (p.p.s?). My FAVORITE place to meet new people is at the bottom of the last two sets of stairs at Lincoln, racing it out. Challenge someone. Push Someone. Meet someone.
