NP Thanksgiving Member Spotlight

It’s the day before Thanksgiving.

“Are you all good?” I ask.

“Fu*$ yeah,” you say.

The turkeys are about to get stuffed fatter than a Build-A-Bear at the mall (Do they even still have those?). The green beans are flowing like the Mississippi. And we started out the morning with a great workout at the Superdome. It was a little chilly. And yes, it started drizzling a little bit. But there was something very poetic about doing a workout together with the November Project NOLA tribe in the actual month of November on the day before a holiday. The air was a little lighter, probably because most folks have a short week at work. The mood was even more upbeat and fun than usual if you can believe it. And then it happens…the moment I thought I had gotten away with:

Preston calls me out, and rightfully so.

He jokingly says, “Hey, Becky, I’m finally going to get that blog from you today, right?”

I cringe because I absolutely hate it when people say they are going to do something and then don’t do it. It’s my pet peeve. They say that what you hate in others is what you hate in yourself, and this is absolutely true in this case.

Allow me to backtrack for a second.

About two months ago, #hotcheetos (aka Preston) does me the honor of asking me to submit a blog post. I am immediately flattered and pumped about it. I like to write about things I’m passionate about. I build up in my head the delusions of grandeur about my chance to write something inspirational about the #tribelove of November Project NO.

As it turns out I am no J.D. Salinger.

You’ve probably figured this out by now since you’ve seen me end sentences with prepositions, but it goes further! I sit down to write what in my head is going to be pure gold! I think I even used the words “pure gold” when #hotcheetos asked me to write the blog.

But I flopped.

I sat down and went back and forth and had nothing. I started probably about 10 times over several weeks and it was just cheesy – I know, I know, insert #hotcheetosandtakis pun here.

But it was forced. It wasn’t funny. It didn’t highlight what NP is all about. So I let it ride for two months hoping #hotcheetos would just let me off the hook, but after today I knew I couldn’t put it off any longer.

“So what is your point to all this, Becky?” you ask.

I’m glad you did.

One of the things I love about NP (besides #freefitness of course) is that it keeps me humble. NP is not about being the best. It’s just about doing your best. When I started this blog-writing two months ago, I did not have a humble attitude and the blog wasn’t my best because of that. We are all pretty much peons on this earth. None of us are going to cure cancer. None of us are going to be president. And that’s ok. Because I don’t know about you, but when I #justshowup at NP, I feel like I am a part of something bigger than myself. There is an intangible sense of community present. I know you know what I’m talking about (damn, another preposition at the end).

Moreover it gives us an opportunity twice per week to help become better versions of ourselves. This is not in a vain/superficial kind of way. My point is it takes discipline to get up at 5:00am when you don’t have to. And you know what else? NP keeps me accountable! There is something about knowing that your buddies are going to be there in the morning that makes it manageable to get my butt up…more than my own will could alone. And you know me, if I say I’m going to do something than I’m going to do it…even though it may take two months.

So in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I would like to say thank you to all of you NP tribe members.

Thank you Cameron, Kate, #hotcheetos (Preston) and #takis (Will).

Thank you to Caitlin Scanlan, one of my very best friends and the tribe mate who originally introduced me to the #freefitness movement.

Thank you NP for keeping me humble.

Thank you NP for keeping me disciplined.

Thank you NP for making me accountable.

Ok, enough of that.

On your forks, get set, EAT!

Don’t forget to #‎earnthatturkey and #justshowup Friday morning at 6:00am at the Lakefront.

Oh, and here is a little gem for your viewing pleasure:
