What do you get when it rains most of the night, then the temperature drops to juuuuuust below freezing so the rain turns to snow about an hour before the 5:30am workout?
You guessed it. An Ice Castle in Allston.
Our #WeatherproofAF workout this morning was brought to you by #SafetyNotThird, with special guests #SnowDayPRday and the new bubble. Don’t know what a #SnowDayPRday is? It’s the PR you set by doing sections in the stadium by avoiding the stairs with snow on them, and you only PR if you don’t fall down. Which means that our ordinary “turn-and-GO” at the bottom of every section was replaced with a “stop carefully-PAUSE-turn slowly-and-ease into that go.” Which also means that we’re not setting any speed records on a day like today, but based on the attendance in both the 5:30 and 6:30 workouts, this city knows that free fitness is where it’s at.
And we get it. Not everyone in the city wants to explore and adventure on stairs in uncertain weather and ground conditions…so we fully support anyone who prefers to go for a run on the clear and paved sidewalks around the stadium or along the river instead of stairs. For those who dared to find fitness on the stairs, we made the absolute best of it. Winter is filled with unexpected moments. Surprise ice, cold snaps for days (thank goodness we’re not in the midwest with -42 degree air temperatures, never mind the wind chill…), snow flurries, weird breaks of sunshine on the coldest days, and who knows what.
But climbing frozen stairs in the Ice Castle in Allston this morning was a good reminder that we may not know what’s out there or have guarantees about the conditions–but when we show up, with good people, (and with the right layers to stay warm/dry), we’ll have a good time.
More wintery good times coming all February long.
Every Saturday in February:November Project Boston’s co-leaders (EmSauce & Capozzi) will be hosting workouts on the Esplanade on SATURDAY mornings. MORE FREE FITNESS in Boston, which is a really really really REALLY great way to bring everyone who doesn’t want to get up for 6:30am workouts (yet) to show up to an NP-style workout and feel the vibe for everything it’s worth. Get them engaged (and hooked) and it might be a lot easier to get those family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and strangers alike to show up MWF mornings with the rest of the tribe for the rest of time. These workouts are part of the Frost Fit Winter Series on the Esplanade, and we’re happy to collaborate with the Esplanade Association to make this happen. Here’s the summary:
- All Saturdays in February. (Feb 2, Feb 9, Feb 16, Feb 23)
- 10 – 11am
- Free fitness + so much fun with NP co-leaders Emily Saul & Chris Capozzi
- Meet in front of the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade.
- Sign up here (more details listed in the sign-up) And you do NOT need to bring a yoga mat, despite what it says.
Super Bowl Sunday Racing: November Project Boston has been racing on Super Bowl Sunday for a handful of years now, in the Super Sunday 5 mile race, in Cambridge. There is a November Project team, and everyone who signs up from any NP tribe can register to be on the NP team. We love having a gigantic NP team!! Get ready to race on Feb 3, 2019. (sign up for either the 5mile or 5k distance and be sure to join the November Project team)
MONDAYS IN FEBRUARY WILL ALL BE ON BRIDGES!

Frances Appleton was married to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. How poetic that the Appleton bridge is partnered now with the Longfellow bridge!
