NPHQ Update 4/2/21

“Going Beyond the Land Acknowledgement”

On March 27th, November Project held a webinar with Elder Dr. Dave Courchene, a respected Elder and Knowledge Keeper of the Anishinaabe Nation who has devoted his life to sharing Indigenous knowledge, carrying a message of hope, peace, and environmental stewardship. In 2002, he founded The Turtle Lodge International Centre for Indigenous Education and Wellness, a sacred lodge recognized internationally and by Indigenous Knowledge Keepers as well as the Assembly of First Nations and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs as one of the most important gathering places for Indigenous Peoples in Canada. read more

November Project members crowd surfing after the workout

Continuing with our Next Steps, here is the January 2021 update:

If you missed the last two posts by The Board Selection Committee (BSC) president and NP DC, Co-leader Emma Cowan-Young, please check out the December and January updates. If you’re in tl:dr mood, here’s are some highlights…. a group of volunteer Co-Leaders and NP Co-Founders formed a Board Selection Committee that was tasked with creating a process to identify and approach potential candidates for the new Board of Directors. We’re pleased to report that we currently have eight confirmed Board Members. Since we’re looking for an odd number of members, the courting process continues. As soon as all the Board seats are filled, we will be making introductions with the whole November Project world. Please join us in thanking our Board Search Committee members for their fantastic work on this project. We couldn’t do it without them.

$13,000 Charitable Donation from NP + Knockaround
As you may remember, the NPSUMMIT gathering was supposed to be in the Twin Cities in the fall of 2020. At the same time, our friends from Knockaround were supposed to drop custom “Just Show Up 2’s” sunglasses on their website and in person at the summit. Due to the global pandemic out plans changed but we still looked for a way to give back to the Twin Cities community. As a result, we asked the Knockaround team to donate 50% of all proceeds from JustShowUp2 sunglasses to Juxtaposition Arts in North Minneapolis. This organization was picked by NP MSP Co-leaders (Nat, Erolf, and Emily) because of their great mission and their commitment to support Black & POCI youth artists and designers in the area. We’re incredibly thankful to Knockaround for their excitement to participate in this outreach and grateful to November Project community that contributed to this $13,000 donation to help “Jxta” folx get closer to their $2M fundraising goal. For more information on this organization, please visit the Juxtaposition website.

Human Resources Hiring Process
November Project will soon add a Human Resources Representative to its leadership ranks. In addition to managing Co-Leader transitions, leadership onboarding, conflict resolution, and the management of the pledging cities, this part-time position with the potential to grow into a full-time role, will conduct Co-Leader training and help develop and execute a long-term HR strategy. From well over a hundred applicants responding to this publicly posted opportunity, we are quickly approaching the final stages of the interviewing process and are looking forward to announcing the newest member of NP HQ in the upcoming weeks. In the meantime, we’ve been lucky to have NP Atlanta Co-Leader and longtime NP member Winnie Lok helping out with internal communication efforts, Co-Leader check-ins, as well as streamlining our current HR processes and information tracking systems. Winnie will be staying on board to help with the transition while the new HR Representative is settling in. Winnie, we’re thankful for all your hard work and support!

What Was Vegas? What Wasn’t Vegas? Where is Minneapolis?

When the promotion for the 2019 November Project Summit first began, many of the people in our global community scratched their heads in confusion. “I’m not going to Las Vegas that place is not my scene”. At the same time, many jumped right on in, thankful that it was in the west for the first time and they are huge fans of Las Vegas. Others were between these two camps. Either way, we knew this was going to be a different year for #NPSUMMIT for sure. For starters, we were transitioning from an all trail relay race we were known for completely taking over, to a race weekend with 30,000+ road runners that would likely gobble us up. But this is November Project, and nothing needs to make sense, as we need to keep changing & trying new things. Like it or love it, our 7th Annual #NPSUMMIT was unlike any of the previous gatherings that came before. read more

A Future So Bright We ALL Wear Sunglasses

Coming off the November Project leadership gathering in Seattle, we’re feeling great! We set out on this trip with a few goals:

  • Give our leaders tools and ability to understand certain powerful topics
  • Share important NP stories
  • Listen to the many voices of co-leaders and members
  • Connect more deeply with Brooks Running
  • Simply share space with one another.

We did all of that and then some and we’ll make sure to share the learnings and takeaways with the whole movement in the upcoming weeks and months. But for now, we want to share this combined all-time high energy inside leadership with the rest of the movement.  read more

The North Face Chapter Closes / Thank You for 4.5 Years of World Takeover & Exploring

This blog isn’t easy to write because, in many ways, it is the end of an era. It was one that was extremely colorful, full of great humans, and a time that I’ll never forget. And although I’m the one holding the pen, I’ve cleared all these words with Bojan and Laura and I can assure you they’re on the same page. The official relationship between November Project and The North Face has come to an end. The shift comes with the most respect, love, and full transparency from The North Face. This is technically a breakup, but there were no hard feelings or less than positive chapters in our story – just a clean end of an era.
