On November 17, 2019 I will be running the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is the destination of this year’s November Project Summit. This adventure began a few months back when my son, known as Kid X, and I decided on a whim to submit a photo for a contest put on jointly by Knockaround Sunglasses and November Project.
After an open voting period, where anyone worldwide could vote on one of the six finalists, we excitedly, and unexpectedly, won the competition, which included a round trip flight and accommodation to Las Vegas and 52 pairs of sunglasses.
When you win a free trip to Sin City, a chance to attend NP Summit, sport a different pair of sunglasses every week of the year, and run down the Las Vegas Strip at sunset, you have no choice but to be bold and press ambition to its limits. I decided to test my luck by dressing as Elvis Presley and compete for the Guinness World Record for the Fastest (Female) Marathon Dressed as Elvis.
From his filming of ‘Viva Las Vegas’ in 1963, to his wedding to Priscilla at the Aladdin Hotel in 1967, all the way up to his 1969 iconic comeback show, Elvis’ karate kicks, crooning voice, thick side burns, swaggering hip moves, and lip snare saturate every part of the city from wedding chapels all the way down the famed Las Vegas Boulevard. He is a part of Las Vegas history and is the embodiment of rock ’n’ roll.
Dressed in a white, high collared jumpsuit with a cape and flares, a pompadour wig, and gold vintage sunglasses, I, like Elvis, will be sweating and downing Gatorade, moving somewhat erratically (with fogged sunglasses), and putting on a performance. But, instead of singing on stage, I will be running 42.2 kms of Las Vegas road and I will be doing it in a jumpsuit made from 100% sustainable fabric made by Unsanctioned Running.
I can’t wait for a weekend with my worldwide NP community, running through the NP cheer zone, kissing Kid X (who will also be wearing an Elvis costume), and crossing that finish line as the King of rock ’n’ roll. As Elvis sang, “I’m gonna keep on the run. I’m gonna have me some fun.” Viva Las Vegas, baby! Long live the King.Share via socials:
