Wake me up when September… begins (YWG)

It was cold and dark when my alarm went off this morning. I was away for two weeks in a country a little further north (Reykjavik is the northernmost capital in the world apparently), so I was used to it being light out at 5am. It was colder and darker than I expected it to be here, and it was a struggle to get out of bed and get to the workout.

But then I got there, and everyone started showing up and I forgot about how I felt when the alarm went off. Because while it’s nice to get a few extra Z’s in, it’s even nicer to get moving, to get sweating and to have some fun with great friends.

Some workouts that we do, we can tell right away afterwards if it was a hit. Others, we can tell right away if it was a flop. Every now and then after the workout I think to myself, ‘Was it a good workout? Or was it terrible?’ Today was one of those days. We made sure it was different to what we’ve done recently, we made sure to throw in some spice, to do some partner work, and to end with a burnout. But still, I wasn’t sure that we nailed it. But then a few messages came in from people that they’d enjoyed the workout, and it gave me some confirmation that we were on the right track. It’s good motivation to keep planning new and improved workouts.

Finishing with a time trial is a fun burnout. Someone who has been getting really fast at the time trials, both on Wednesday and Friday mornings, is Olee Olee Octopus, Oliver Silastre. I was chirping him this morning that he could go a little faster, but truthfully, he’s been pouring it all out there every time we do a time trial. It’s fitting that he should receive the Shabooya Award, especially as it was being passed from one Spartan to another. And yes, as Jessica mentioned, he has a great voice.

It’s going to keep getting colder and darker as we head into winter. Don’t let it stop you from showing up. This is when the real magic happens. We have a few things in the works for the fall that we will keep you posted on as we finalize details, including the infamous lumberjack workout, some NP social, and another charity drive as we join all of the other tribes in the month of September’s #NPgivesback campaign for the bettering of the world.

It’s great to be back.

Stay weatherproof Winnipeg.
