I had a really cool interaction this morning. As I was doing my 30 reps, I think I was just wrapping up my tricep dips, I started chatting with a bench neighbor also doing dips. Our conversation went something like this:
- Me: Good morning
- J: Good morning
- Me: Good to see you. Glad you’re here. How are you?
- J: something to the effect of ” Well, I’m here, I got up and I made it. How are you, Jen?
- Me: Amazing!
- J: Tell me why
- Me: pause…Ummm…because I always marvel that people show up to do this thing…I wonder if it will ever end, if there will be a day when no one shows up, but look at this! I mean the stairs are crowded! How can I be anything more than amazing.
And then I ran off, with the biggest smile on my face. What a gift it was to be asked why I felt amazing. I know I sometimes answer the “How are you?” question without much thought. It can become one of those automatic responses…oh, I’m good or …oh, I’m fine but if you have to answer why it takes that question to a new level.
Those 3 simple words…tell me why…allowed me to stop and verbalize what it was about this morning that made me feel amazing. It gave me the opportunity to really appreciate the feeling and the reason for that feeling. It also allowed me to share with someone else my gratitude for our community.
My challenge to you: the next time you ask someone how they are take it a step further. After they respond, follow up with a “tell me why” and gift them the time and space to share with you. You may be met with an awkward pause like the one I gave, but it is worth it!
