Stadium Days (BOS 3.6.19)

Wednesdays are the days for stadium stairs. We all know that. We trust it, rely on it, and show up for it, even in the craziest of conditions. This morning was a testament to the dedication of the tribe–both being completely #weatherproof, and in taking on risk and challenge just to get that badass workout we love so much. It was super cold. Like, it shouldn’t be this cold, even in the dead of winter–cold. And windy. Brutal, face-freezing, like mother-nature’s botox–windy. And the snow from Sunday night into Monday morning that pretty much shut down the city for the morning is still hanging around.

So even if we know what Wednesdays are supposed to be–when the winter throws those conditions at us, what do we do???

  1. We #JustShowUp more. The awesome assembly of volunteer snow shoveling tribe members–otherwise know as the #shovelcrew–came to the stadium on Monday evening, during that perfect window of “after work” and “before the world turns to solid ice because the temperatures are plummeting.” And in about 90 minutes, a team of roughly 15 humans moved enough snow for the tribe to complete 7 sections of stairs on Wednesday morning.
  2. We take some risks. We know that ice on stairs is kinda dangerous–but stairs that are mostly clear … or juuuust enough clear to find footing … or even though you’re stepping on top of ice, at least you can see where it is–all those stairs are worth climbing up! And yes it’s riskier than totally clear, dry, non-winter stairs, but we have the ability to assess the risk and choose to take it because we are #weatherproof. And we have the capacity to safely navigate the risks we face.
  3. We embrace adventure. Like when a couple of the stairs we use to get down a section or two were fully clear when the #shovelcrew left them Monday night, but due to the snow sliding off the bubble and then being snow-blown from the turf field below, they were SO filled with snow that they became a slip-n-slide-like ski slope rather than stairs. Did the tribe say “no way” or “I’m out…get me off these stairs?” Hell no they didn’t. Human after human grabbed the railing tightly and skied down on their feet or they sat and sledded down on their asses. But they got down, (safely) they turned, and they climbed up the big seats. Yes…ADVENTURE!! Have you ever been skiing in the stadium? After this morning, many of us can say we have!

And at the end of the day–we had another Wednesday stadium day–but one unlike any other. Thanks for showing up today, Boston. It was definitely worth it.
