Shorts and a T

As I make my way to Toronto, to run in the Toronto Waterfront Marathon (the half!!), I couldn’t help but notice the milder morning we had as I left for the airport.

I’m sad I couldn’t be there with you all this morning because it looked like there were a lot of shorts and Ts out there today. I guess that’s what 11 degrees calls for in Edmonton… in mid October. We know what it’s usually like this time of year, don’t we?

I thought I’d share something special that is happening on this race weekend in Toronto.

My Mom, who many of you met this past year as she crushed out some stairs and hills with us, has signed up to also race in the half marathon.

My Mom!!! I’ve shared with some of you, but certainly not all of you, that my Mom started running as a way to support me as I ran my first marathon- on my 40th birthday (#40on40 + 2.2). She had never run before Fall 2020 and with two months of training, she ran a half marathon alongside “her girl” living so far away in Edmonton.

Fast forward two years. She has found a running group close to her and has kept up some running here and there. As I talked about coming to do this race – as a way to set a goal for myself after a horrific disc herniation earlier this year – my Mom told me she too had a goal.

She signed up to run the half marathon.

She quickly turned that running here and there into a “I need to properly train for this” kind of thinking. She worked with the coach of that running group, put in the work over the past few months and is ready to run this coming weekend. My Mom!

It’s actually now turned into a family thing.

My younger sister signed up to run/walk the 5k with her 10 month old + 4 year old (the most perfect children… says this Aunty Z). My Dad also signed up to run/walk the 5k and be with these two grandbabes. My bro-in-law, who has run Boston many times, is lacing up his runners again after a few years away. A handful of our family friends – people I grew up with, love, and regularly go home to spend time with – are showing up to see my Mom, Savi, cross that finish line. Her first ever race! And yes, my Casey is also going to be there to cheer us all on too and be extra happy for me when I throw down what I’ve been training for these past couple of months.

It’s wild to me that this is happening. I never imagined that this would happen in my family.

I’m really lucky that I was raised with health and wellness; this is a core value that my family regularly lived but I really didn’t think that at this stage in our lives, we’d be doing this together.

What a treat!

Anyhow, I thought I’d share something very special and important that is taking me away from our NP famjam over the next few days.

Way to crush it this morning. We’re being eased into our collective #weatherproofness this year. Lucky us!
