Most of this post is written by the tribe, filtered through our very own Nathan Fisher. But first, a little context from Alex and Rebecca for why we worked out in a grocery store this morning:
We’re getting pretty stir crazy in Oakland. But being forced inside does force us to get creative, and we’ll be honest, we’ve had some pretty memorable workouts lately. For NP Oakland’s popup workout this morning, the awesome management team at the local Safeway let us work out in the aisles. All we can say is that it was a blast. Take it away, Nathan. (We’ll be over here crying happy tears.)
An Open Letter to BarBath:
With Bay Area air quality still poor, you two spent your Sunday convincing Jim, the manager at Safeway, that he should let your “tribe” come exercise in his store the next morning at 6:30am, his corporate overlords be damned. You then prepped a produce-friendly-workout / Alameda-food-bank-fundraiser, got in your own exercise (since you’re the only two people–besides Tommy and Pach–who don’t break much of a sweat at NP) and presumably headed to bed at 4:55pm PT in order to be absurdly cheerful at an ungodly hour the next morning. And then you do it again. And again. And again.
And you do it simply because you want to build something beautiful for and with us. So, as we head into Thanksgiving week, your tribe took pen to paper and said thanks in our own words. While most of what we wrote in that Safeway bag of thank-you cards is just for you, here are a few anonymous highlights:
“I like watching the year change from the Lake Merritt Boathouse. It’s dark for months, then light, then dark again. It’s cold, it’s rainy, it’s cool and clear, now it’s getting cold again. Soon it will be December and we’ll be where we started with East Bay Free Fitness. I also really like things and people I can count on. Every Wednesday, no matter what is going on the world, Alex and Rebecca will be there at 6:28. Alex will be kind, Rebecca will be supportive. They’ll both be happy to be there. They’ll make us all happy to be there, and happy to be together. I’m thankful for them.”
“You two kick ass and make Oakland an even better place to live.”
“I really am grateful for your endless energy, your positivity, your welcomeness to us newbies, your approachability, your impressive name-knowing skills, and all of the time and thought you invest in making this special community.”
“..thank you for all the hard work you put into NP_Oak every week, from conception to leading the movement in Oakland…you are helping to take over the world with your positivity, energy and hype!”
“Thank you for making NP Oakland happen and for expanding my community! I look forward to positive Wednesday mornings and meeting new friends…fuck yeah!”
“Having somewhere to go, with people I wanted to be with, once a week every week, really helped make my transition to moving to a new coast easier, and now I feel so fortunate to have a network of such amazing people in the area…long story short, you two are amazing and I’m really proud to be part of the Oakland tribe!”
“Thank you for all the early mornings, late nights, hanging out by people’s stuff, and all the other things you’ve done to foster this community. It’s been a real source of encouragement and positivity in my life.”
“Thank you for the time and energy that you put into helping all of us to build a community of friends through NP Oakland.”
“I know that I can come any time and you’ll be there with smiling faces and a LOT of energy.”
“You’re both superstars! I feel incredibly lucky to have met you and am thankful all the time that you share so much of yourselves with us every week. November Project is so much more than just a workout and you embody that so completely. Thank you for giving so much of your time, energy, and positivity. You guys are killing it…”
“Dear Alex and Rebecca…will you both marry me?”
When I sat down last night to write you two my letter, I was thinking back to our first small pilot of an #EastBayFreeFitness workout, and at the time, I had no idea how deep were your reserves of energy, creativity, openness, patience, fitness, silliness and stretchy tights. And with each bounce since that Wednesday last winter, you’ve both just gotten better and better. Five to ten years from now, when you’ve long since handed off the reins to new tribe leaders and are probably elbows deep in dirty diapers, I’m convinced that you’ll #JustShowUp on a Wednesday morning to an even more diverse and tight-knit tribe than the 40-strong group that put on their N95 masks this morning and assembled to run the aisles of Safeway with you and Jim. NP_Oakland is incredible, and what’s so cool is that it’s still just in its infancy.
Thank you, Rebecca and Alex. For all that you’ve done for me, for my family, for our friends, for this beautiful tribe…please take a comp day this Wednesday.
And Happy Thanksgiving, Oakland tribe!!
