Remember to keep it fun (YEG)

I was recently talking to a good friend and fellow member of the NP community and we discovered that we both have the same anxious feelings sometimes before Friday workouts at Walterdale Hill.

Of course Friday hill workouts are a blast and one of my favourite parts of the week. But, they’re also really hard! I always want to give it my max effort and meet or exceed my personal best, but pushing like that all the time can also be exhausting, both mentally and physically. Unfortunately, it can drain the fun from this activity that’s meant to be a super positive experience.

Sometimes, both in workouts and in life in general, we feel the need to be go-go-go all the time, doing more and more, pushing harder and harder. I’m certainly guilty of this. However, life isn’t all about how far you ran on the hill or how much work you got done.

After all, the greatest part of November Project isn’t the workouts but the community of people. Looking back on my favourite NP memories, none of them involve getting new PBs on the hill. My favourite memories come from feeling part of this community and the experiences I’ve gotten to share with all of you.

Going forward, if I feel nervous about a workout, I’m going to try to remember that I’m showing up to be part of this community. Whether or not I run as far as I did last week, what matters is that I showed up and started my day with this great group of people.

I wanted to write this blog in case anyone else out there shares the same feeling. Let this be a reminder that it’s always okay to take it a bit slower sometimes and keep it fun!
