Today is Red dress day, a day of awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous persons. You may have seen Churchill Square and Beaver Hills House Park adorned with red dresses. In a continued effort to keep highlighting other organizations & events in the running/fitness industry, I wanted to draw your attention to a virtual event hosted by Native Women Running: “Native Women Running was ahead of the curve with transitioning in person races to virtual ones, creating a virtual run in honor of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in May 2019. This May marks the 3rd annual MMIW Virtual Event, held May 5-8, 2021. Run, walk, or hike at any time, distance, place, or pace. Participants are asked to wear red in honor of MMIW Day, as the color red has, historically, been associated with violence and anger and many of these women have died by means of violence. Native Women Running wishes to use the color red in remembrance of these women’s lives because they matter. Get more info/Register here. Check out the event Facebook page here.” I encourage you to follow the links and join the global November Project community in participating.
This blog is also the first one after the completion of the April challenge. Congratulations to everyone who participated!! I can’t believe how close this was! Team Not that Speedy has some super awesome art work made by Lazina and I coming their way. Making it made me feel like a kid again and I can’t wait to give out this month’s prize. If you haven’t already, please feel free to still sign up for the May challenge: https://forms.gle/SkJcceXRukUJjQxH7. This month is all about mystery workouts that you helped design! What could Friday be? Who knows! But seriously, it is very hard not to peak and see which card on the board is which.
Here are the final tallies from April – more than 1800kms traveled!!!

I just wanted to point out again how close our top two teams were. Yes, these challenges are focused on making connections with people from the community and holding each other accountable, but I can’t help but relish in how unlikely this outcome was. Six people all running in their own bubble and they end up only being 200 meters apart! To everyone who participated, big kudos to finding the discipline to tie your shoes and step outside each M/W/F. I know for me some days, I feel like this comic:

And some days its not as hard to get my butt out of bed. If there is anything that I am taking away from the April challenge, it is that every little bit helps (I am sure any of those people would have run an extra 200m if given the chance). Some effort is better than no effort at all – a mantra I tell myself in many of aspects of my life (like flossing lol).
Have a great rest of your day!
Keep being awesome,
Rob
