NP Strikes Back (Ottawa)

Good morning, NP Jedis. After this morning’s workout, Phase I of your training is now complete. But before you start ordering your light sabres, there is an important educational component that follows Phase I. You might call it Phase II.

Phase II consists of effectively useless information and fun facts about Star Wars!

Did you know…

→ In the very early writing stages of The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda was originally named Buffy, which is amazing because it instantly evokes an image of a badass Yoda fighting vampires.

→ When Star Wars was being filmed in the Redwood forests of California, the actor playing Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) had to be constantly chaperoned by bodyguards in bright vests in order to protect him from hunters, who could have easily mistaken him for a bear. Bodyguards were also tasked with protecting the actor from people searching the forest for Bigfoot.

→ A few members of the boy band, NSYNC, were cast as Jedi Knights in Attack of the Clones. Apparently, director George Lucas’s daughter was quite a fan of the band (one can only assume that this was a thinly veiled cover-up so that George Lucas didn’t have to admit that he was into 90’s boy bands). Tragically, their scenes were cut. Bye Bye Bye indeed.

→ It took 7 different puppeteers to move JABA the Hutt (photo below for those who aren’t familiar with JABA’s figure). Three puppeteers were inside: 1 for the right side, another to control the left side, and a third puppeteer in the tail. Puppeteers 4 and 5 were outside with radio controllers for the eyes, number 6 was under the stage blowing cigar smoke up a tube, and number 7 worked bellows for the lungs.

It’s kind of hard to segue out of a picture of JABA the Hutt into something that has a larger, NP-related theme. So let’s just say, when your body feels heavy, we are here to help you move 🙂

Sole-fully,
The Chewbeccas
