Before this must-read Know Your Tribe blog: #verbal now for the most interesting MONDAY you’ve seen in a while. Map location here…or just meet at 6:29am underneath section 19 in good old H Stadium. (H parking rules still apply so RUN your ass there!)
George Woodward is one of the older members of the tribe, but don’t let this old man fool you. He’s somehow got wiser AND faster. It’s like he’s Benjamin Buttoning race speed. Dude is like a hundred years old, but still throws down sub-30 minute stadiums all the time (with his eyes on sub-25) and makes us young clowns look like chump change. If you’ve ever been passed by George, you know that even though he’s competitive, he brings the NP spirit in spades to every workout — cheering people on, and chucking positivity around like it’s candy on Halloween. One thing you probably don’t know is that after EVERY. SINGLE. WORKOUT. George comes up to each of us three and thanks us for the workout, and tells us how grateful he is. He’s a class act all the way, and if you don’t know him yet, now’s the time…

Name: George Woodward
Alias/Nickname: GW
Date of First Workout: Fall 2013
Why’d you Just Show Up? After Boston 2013 running was not fun. I thought this gang might just make it fun again. I still have not gotten over it – but running is fun again.
Bostonian or Transplant? Small farm towns in Minnesota and Iowa, then high school in Cincinnati and college in Chicago. Moved to Boston after college and never left. Been here 40+ years – so now a Bostonian?
Tribes Visited: MSP (many times) and SAD
Tribe Crush: Anyone smart, funny, and hard working.
Favorite NP Day of the Week: Wednesdays
Favorite Recurring Workout: Stadium #PRDay
Least Favorite Recurring Workout: anything with Burpees
Favorite NP Workout EVER:
- February 2015 at The Stadium – snow, cold and dark – and it was incredible
- Sardines
- Chris P. driving solo at the Institute of Contemporary Art
I’ll never forget… Brogan’s Newbie meeting, “I’m from Wisconsin and I’m nice, you’re from Boston and you’re not. But you’ll be nice for 60 minutes while you’re here.”
I laughed hardest when… Whenever Chris P. tries to give the instructions.
Anyone inspire you at NP that you haven’t told yet (now’s the time…don’t make it weird)? Larry Anderson, Anderson/Klawiter, Lauren Padula, Corinne, John, Caleb, Kristen, among many.
Why do you keep showing up?
- I meet (new hash tag: #NP_Know) the most interesting and amazing people. People I never would have met if not for NP.
- I love the competition. It is mainly competing against myself, just get faster. However, nothing better than passing some young person on the steps and know their saying, “the fucking old man just passed me.”
- I’ve told this endlessly but, Brogan told me, “nobody as old as you ever runs sub-30.” Wow, really? Took me a year, but I did. Sub-25 is the current goal.
What do you do for a living? I write code, help the sales team sell things, discover connections, motivate people and help make people’s lives a little better. I work for a medical device company.
When you were a child, what did you “want to do when you grow up?” Helicopter Pilot
What is your superpower? Super high metabolism
What’s a question that we didn’t ask that we should’ve?
Q: What are your racing superstitions?
Answers:
- Never wear Race gear before finishing.
- Get a haircut one week before the race.
- Rub the toes on the Johnny Kelley Statue
- Never cross the finish line before race day.
Who is your favorite NP Boston Co-Leader?
Remember, they are all volunteers. Nothing happens without them giving of their time. Say thank you, often.
Do you have one interesting NP factoid:
Erika and Eric meet in a, graduation mandatory, dance class in college.
