It’s been a year

And what a year it’s been!

I officially said “yes” to being a NP Canada co-leader on September 11 last year and Rob dropped the news to y’all a few weeks later. So, sometime around now is a good moment to take pause and look back at the last year.

Well for starters, most of the fears/hang ups I had are not a thing anymore. They were:

  • I can’t do this. I’m not Jen or Nadim.
  • Will our NP Canada crew accept this? I’m not Jen or Nadim.
  • I’m not one of the fittest people in our NP community.
  • I’m not white (I know… you’re like, “but Nadim’s not white”).
  • I kinda know most people but I’m not really part of a group or run crew within NP.
  • I can’t imagine doing the bounce. Especially not at Commonwealth. There’s too many people there and I don’t scream very loudly.

These aren’t a fear of mine anymore. Some of that is because of you and some of that is because of me.

Because of you: Before my time, we only knew Andrew, Jen, Nadim, and then Rob as co-leaders in our city. This isn’t common in other cities but here, they were our constant rays of sunshine and morning smiles (and, they are legends in the NP co-leadership world). Of course, a leadership role in this city would be intimidating for anyone to step into. I was (am) one of you/us. I have been since June 2014. Not surprisingly though, you welcomed me. I thought it would be a much more awkward transition but you’ve been so kind, have said “hey”, thanked Rob and I for keeping things moving during covid, have shared some thoughts and feedback (which I love), and have just shown up! This past year was also made smooth because of Jen, Nadim, and Andrew who I feel I’ve had a direct line to over the past year to chat things out and ask questions as they’ve come up… true leaders.

Because of me: if you didn’t read a post I shared a while back, feel free to take a read here. I think a lot of the fears I mentioned above and in that blog post were in my own head. They didn’t have much to do with any of you really. We all do this huh- to greater or lesser degrees? We put up our own barriers to opportunities (big or small) that come our way. I think by opening my thinking and changing the script in my own head, I have been able to reduce some of the “I can’t do this” thoughts I had when I was first asked to consider taking on this incredible role.

Yeah, I’m still a bit nervous to lead the bounce at Commonwealth… if we ever get there. #hopesanddreams2022

Yeah, I need to have more of a teacher or Mom morning yell… I’m working on it and could use some practice in a big open field.

I do know though that pre-covid, during covid, and whatever we’re calling right now can only exist when we all come together. It’s never been nor will ever be about one or two or three people. As Nadim has coached me on, “our role is to create the best sandbox ever” and well, it’s up to all of you to decide how you want to play in it, just as you’ve/we’ve done since 2013!
