Get Connected (LAX)

I’m proud of my tribe. When I scan the group in front of me at the end of the workouts each Wednesday and Friday I see the faces of people who have gone outside of the realm of what’s expected and what is “normal” and have shown up consistently for themselves and for each other. This group has grown from an amalgam of strangers with nice smiles and good hugs into a like-minded force of goodness and positivity.

15541659_1318359904882408_4831079878917558732_n-1There’s a saying Brogan said: “You’re changing the chemistry of the cities you live in.” We’re certainly doing that here in LA and you can see it first hand on a day like Friday when we showed up for the first time in a new area and people stood at a distance with puzzled smiles, trying to understand what we are. It’s nice to say “Good morning!” to those people and receive a bewildered smirk and bashful wave back. Those are the people who this is going to sit with all day. They might sit at the desk they work at and from time to time, remember those people dressed in black who invaded their neighborhood or that neon tie-dye of people swarming on the beach below the Santa Monica Pier. Those who are interested will ask what we are and then it’s easy to recruit. Maybe they’ll come, maybe they wont, but we know we tried our best. But what about everyone else?

What about the people that used to come but we haven’t seen them in a long time? What about the people who came once and said they loved it but we haven’t seen them back? What about the girl in the checkout line at the grocery store who has an air of sadness about her? What about the older guy, pushing his hardest up a hill on his evening run, not fast, but slow and steady and determined? What about that woman who streaks past your table at the cafe and then gets stuck at the next light before she can cross? Do they deserve to be a part of this too?

We’re an amazing group and the things we do for ourselves and for each other are commendable accomplishments that we should truly be proud of. But a closed system eventually burns itself out. In order for a chemical reaction to continue on, new energy has to be folded into it so that it can continue to grow and fire on all cylinders. It’s not even just a matter of spreading out to touch others, in order to stay alive ourselves we need that new spark and that new chemical to start things up all over again.

We’ve had a challenging few months. I wrote a while ago that I loved the home we were relegated to, and I do, but it’s a tough place to feel inspired. Part of our plan for finding a new home is to find places that inspire us and remind us how great this city is and give ourselves more reasons to get out and connect within it. The Observatory will be a place where we can see our city from above, where we can re-charge and tell people “We’re killing it every week in one of LA’s most beautiful places and we want you there.”

15390668_1318359604882438_4032258174067980621_nSo in the next month and a half, GET CONNECTED. Reach out to those phone numbers you got today and let them know you think they’re badass. Get into your homework and search some of those old group shots and ask people who have faded out how they are doing, tell them we miss them. GET OFF YOUR BUTTS and tell a stranger to come to this thing because it’s great! Tell a person you think would never come in a million years because you might be wrong. You were all given this gift of NP by someone else and it would be a shame to be selfish about it and keep it for yourself.

I can’t tell you enough how proud I am to be a leader of this group that mobilizes in a way that no other tribe seems to do. There’s a fire in all of you that is going to keep this thing alive and strong for a long time. Let’s share that fire because the best thing about a flame is that when it’s shared, it never diminishes, it only grows. Let’s grow stronger for ourselves, for each other and for the great people who are about to join the ranks of our tribe.
