….being uncomfortable. When it comes to November Project, and athletics in general, this contradiction is one of my favourite. Its interpretation can be projected onto so many different scenarios and it is the mantra in which we find solace together.
To me it means understanding that your body and brain aren’t always working in tandem. That you can do extraordinary things should you be willing to take one more step, and that you know and learn where your limits are.
The first time I felt like I understood this was actually while swimming a few years ago. Having heard the phrase from Leaders in the past it came into my brain as I was dealing with an annoying situation. Lap after lap in the pool a small water droplet had made its way into my goggles and ever so slowly began to drop down the rim. All I wanted to do was stop and fix it, brush it away, stop the nagging feeling it was causing. I knew that it wasn’t going into my eye (haha I knew that would have been my limit) but I also knew that its presence wasn’t interfering with the task at hand. Call it a little challenge to myself, a silly goal, or a completely unnecessary situation; whatever you want to call it this event made the phrase click in my brain – I can push further past where my mind says stop. Since then this has been applied to so many other other aspects of my life and I am sure that upon reflection you too could name a few times where something clicked in your head and you decided to continue.
For everyone that showed up today I think that you lived this mantra. With all the struggles put in front of you, all of the excuses you could have used, you said no. In the end you took another step. You showed yourself and you showed others that you can take on hardship and that you can persevere. This is a life lesson that you can project onto anything and I hope you do. You can persevere.
A special congratulations to Eric the newest recipient of the positivity award. The man lives ‘perseverance’ – he shows up, puts the work in, and we are all better for it.
As always my dear reader – keep being awesome,
Rob
