Forecasts (YEG)

I know that regardless of the weather when I wake up, I will roll out of bed and make my way to November Project. Even knowing that the weather doesn’t impact my decision to just show up, I will still check the forecast the night before to see what conditions I can expect at 6 AM. There’s a practical purpose for this as I lay out all of my clothes the night before so that there is minimal brain activity required at 5 AM. There is also a psychological purpose as I want to know what to prepare myself for. The sunny forecasts are easy, the cold not quite so much, and for me, the rainy forecasts are the hardest to prepare for. I hate being wet! Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised in the morning when I wake expecting rain and it’s sunny and sometimes somewhat disappointed when I plan for a sunny morning and I get wind and snow.

Nadim on the other hand never checks the forecast the night before. He rolls with whatever presents itself in the morning. He also knows, regardless of mother nature’s gifts, he will also just show up. I guess he doesn’t get disappointed by the weather because he hasn’t counted on anything one way or the other.

While Nadim and I prepare differently for the weather what we do share in common is a commitment to showing up regardless of the weather. I am glad that I don’t base my decision to run stairs or hills or do Monday circuits on the night before forecast. If I did I would have missed out on some amazing mornings! Think of all the mornings lately that we’ve beat the rain!! This morning was another glorious morning! I don’t know what the rest of the day will bring but I know that the sun on my face as I ran with my community was perfect!

This weekend there are a lot of events happening – Edmonton 10K, Great White North Triathlon, Sinister 7. Whether your competing, cheering, supporting, or none of those things and just doing your own thing, don’t let the forecast get in your way. We can’t control the weather but we can embrace the experience and run (bike/swim/cheer/crew) with whatever presents itself.
