Fill Your Cup Too (YEG)

To set the stage for this conversation there is an analogy we should review. Imagine that you have a cup that you fill with all your joy, happiness, and contentment. You cup is emptied by various activities, you can replenish your cup, and you can poor from your cup into another’s cup. The severity and ways that you you do all of this is personal and its different for every person but the important is if your cup runs empty then you can’t function anymore.

I love this analogy because it encompasses many aspects of life while acknowledging that there is only so much you an give before you have to replenish your cup. In our world of fitness for example I think the need to replenish your cup is a hard lesson we experience quickly but the extend of which is a continual lesson. When you dedicate yourself to a fitness goal you learn that a huge chunk of your time is spent planning out how you will complete your goal and training your body in conditioning/weightlifting which is all in service of protecting your body not just so you can be cardiovascularly fit. Then on the way to your goal your spending huge chunks of time recovering and recuperating – stretching, yoga, getting proper sleep etc. You learn and relearn this lesson over and over again until it sticks (even if just somewhat). An ex-NBA player used this analogy (my apologies I can’t think of the person’s name but all the credit to him) and compared it to when a a professional athlete has a shitty game and we find out that they partied the night before. We’d question what that person was thinking “how could they do such a thing.” There are so many factors that go into our day-to-day choices and by no means can we also “be on” or goal focused all the time but be it fitness or in the workplace you just can’t take it all on. You have to put as much effort into emptying your cup as you do replenishing your cup. Today I needed to remind myself of this lesson. This weekend I’m going to do my best to replenish my cup as much as I can and I hope you can too. That way when next week comes around we can give it our best – until we need to fill our cup again.

Also thank you to all the words of encouragements after today’s bounce! It was very “buzzy” as Lazina put it haha. I needed that hype this morning. Your comments and support are always so welcomed. Can’t wait to see you on Monday for the NPCan classic: 12 days of Christmas workout.

Rob
