Doing It Right (NOLA)

Something important happened this morning. Something we all needed to hear. Something I clearly need to remember. It pains me to say this, but Louis, you’ve done good.

As I finished explaining the main part of the workout (for anyone who was wondering: side lunges & frog jumps up the stairs, 10 burpees at the top, a run down the ramp, 10 dips at the bottom, a skip back to the start, and 10 sit-ups before you do it all over again), Louis interrupted me. Now, typically this is the point where I begin to roll my eyes because he always gets the attention, but today, his interruption was welcome. His interruption was important.

“When you’re doing these exercises, make sure you are doing it right. Think about your form and listen to your body. Or else you’ll end up like Mia who is suffering a back injury for not doing it right.”

*cue eye roll*

Now while Louis may not be accurate on why I’m suffering a back injury (honestly, I have no idea why I’m hurt), he’s right about one thing…. Doing it right: It means keeping your form proper. It means keeping your core tight and your knees slightly bent. It means keeping your back up and your hips tucked. More than anything, it means listening to what does and does not feel right.

I wanted to write this blog to reiterate one thing – no matter how much you like to compete, how fast you would like to be, or how stubborn you want to seem, nothing is more detrimental than ignoring your body. NP is one huge fucking family. We have each other’s backs day in and day out (not just Monday, Wednesday and Friday). No one is going to think less of you if you decide to take a break for a while or opt out of an exercise; no one is going to pressure you to try something you just don’t want to try (except maybe hugs…. because hugs).  Honestly, my respect is much greater for those who choose to listen to their bodies first – it means they love and respect their bodies, and that fucking rocks.

So today when I’m sitting in the waiting room to get my back checked out by a professional (although I would like to admit, I think I got enough advice from the tribe to be fine), I’ll be reminiscing on how great this morning was and how proud I am to be a leader of this tribe. From the relay races where everyone busted their asses this morning to the never-ending love and support we show each other, I am confident the tribe is strong.

Go win your day, NOLA.
