Challenges (YEG)

Wow! First off, for each and every one of you who showed up this morning, thank you!!! The collective energy was invigorating and whether you were tackling the gristle, the old 96er, a 59-minute stadium tour, a 30-minute stadium tour, or supporting your community, you had an impact!!

These Commonwealth challenges, along with others like the Walter, were dreamed up by us to provide our community with crazy, fun physical feats. They are truly a piece of our imaginations combined with our NP grassroots roots that seem to take on a life of their own.

The first attempt of the old 96er had only 3 finishers – Andrew, Judy and Cathleen! There were more the second attempt and then came talk of strategy – “run the downs” “double step to 75 then single step to the top” “finish the lower bowl in 19, leaving 20 minutes for each upper section”. And then water stations, support crews, training programs, cheer squads, and the Gristle! It would be easy for this made-up challenge to shift one’s focus from the community to personal accomplishment – I know I need to remind myself of this at times.

Our foundational value, always, is to use fitness to build community. These challenges ask us to balance our personal goals with those of our community. I am so proud of you for holding each other up and also achieving so much. I loved watching people cheer others on from the sidelines while knowing they would have given anything to be able to have raced too. I loved seeing the elation on the faces of friends who witness other friends achieve a goal they’ve dug deep for. I loved seeing the hugs that were shared between exhausted climbers who were only sections away from the end when time was called. I loved seeing a smiling face behind a camera lens when in spite of a race day that didn’t go as planned he chose joy and showed up in another way for his community.

This is what November Project is about – sharing in each other successes, journeys, close calls, and struggles all while pushing our own personal limits. It’s about community and it’s a community that I am proud to be a part of!
