Bad Jokes and Good Vibes (DCA)

So Spiderman, an angel, and a rookery of penguins walk up to the Lincoln Memorial…

Ok, sounds like the start of a really bad joke. Or who knows, it could be a fantastic joke. Either way, the good vibes were flowing this morning at NP_DC. It was PR week, people were all costumed up, and we saw yet another incredible sunrise. All of this is great. But it wouldn’t happen without moments like the following:

It’s cold. It’s January. We’ve just finished a great Wednesday workout at Lincoln. #EarlyMorningAbe is in full swing. Danny and I are on our way to scope out a possible Friday location. As we jog along, we come to a stop light alongside a woman who appears to be out on her morning walk/jog. As we all meet eyes, a bright ‘Good Morning!’ rolls of the tongue from Danny. We both smile at her and chat about the weather, slipping November Project into the conversation. She’s interested, says she’ll check it out but we can’t get a hard verbal from her. We wish her a great day and keep moving.

Fast forward roughly 10 months. Halloween workout, costumes, we’ve grown from 100 to 400+ souls sharing the same positive community since last January. Things are chugging along smoothly. We finish up and a woman approaches me. She was that woman. After 10 months, the worries of being able to keep up had been set aside and she and a friend had come to check us out. THEY LOVED IT. In fact, I can guarantee that we’ll see them back here. Recruiting success.

The moral of the story? Plant the seed. Some people will be all about it right away. Others will take time. But spreading the word about the positivity, love, community, family we’ve created here at NP does wonderful things. As we near the 3 year anniversary of founding of November Project, there’s a big recruiting push. We want to see 3,014 people attending a workout somewhere in North America on a single Wednesday. Here in DC, we want to see 500 people at a single workout. But don’t do it for the numbers. Do it for the smile that you know you’ll see on that person’s face after a MWF workout. Do it to change lives, change this city, and change the world.

  1. Danny and Steve: I am the girl you mention above and I remember that day so well! I went to Facebook and have been following you for the past ten months and looking at all the gorgeous pictures and awesome workouts. I used to hike Squaw Peak, a small mountain in Phoenix, every morning before work, but after moving to DC, there was no early morning “mountain to climb” and I definitely lost my cardio-capability. It did take ten months and a friend to accompany me to get me down to Lincoln – and it was wonderful! Thanks for bringing me my new mountain – it’s a pretty spectacular view and I will definitely be back. Thanks to both of you for your incredible spirit and ability to bring so many people together in such magnificent places for such great workouts! THANK YOU!
