#raceeverything guest blog post by Myles Fennon

As we step into the week of one of the biggest races in New York we asked Captain Myles Fennon to write a blog post about how you can join the team.

Many of you have probably heard of New York Road Runner (NYRR), they’re the great folks who put on the NYC Marathon along with more than 50 other running related events throughout the year. You may also have heard stories of John and Paul, former NP_NYC leaders and NYRR alumni. Back when NP_NYC was still in it’s infancy, some of us would get together before races to take a picture. Soon enough, we realized that many of us were running unaffiliated, but most of us were racing in neon clad, spray painted shirts. So in 2015, team NP was born as a club within NYRR. read more

lets get it started …..

Today was a little different for the Brooklyn crew of November Project. When the tribe members arrived to Fort Greene park they were welcomed with the usual sweaty hugs but a big camera crew from Strava. They are in town to film a short film about the running community and how diverse and different the running community is. Often times runners are intimidated about running and starting for the very first time. Theres always every excuse in the book why not to start.  It is very common for us to compare ourselves to others especially with all the forms of social media out there. A few excuses are listed below read more

WE WILL MISS YOU, PAUL AND JOHN: 3 YEARS OF NOVEMBER PROJECT MEMORIES

The tribe has never been about just one person. Anyone who has been to one workout or 100 workouts will tell you we are better together. It’s the November Project NYC community as a whole that makes it so special. But today, it’s about two people.

We’re talking about the two people who brought us all here in the first place. The two people who thought it was a good idea to start this thing in the dead of winter. The two people who recruited a wonderful, supportive, and kick-ass group, day after day, week after week, year after year. The two people who helped us find other weirdos just like us in the greatest city in the world. read more

Never under estimate the power of a hug

  • IMG_0472some of you may know last Sunday tragically my father fell and hit his head that caused a hemorage on his brain. He went under emergency surgery and when he awake was in an induced coma.  In a flurry of events my mom rode in the ambulance and when arriving to the hospital her cell phone was dead. She was instructed to go to the waiting room outside the ICU where she will be given further notice if his condition post surgery. That is where she was welcomed open arms by the Lopez family. They extended cell phones, weather updates offered food and water. It was shocking to me that this family was so willing to help us.  Over the next 48 hours my dad remained in ICU for observation and was in an induced coma till that evening. This was terrifying seeing someone you love more than anything powerless. Throughout the night we saw the Lopez family come in shifts their was about 30 of them that we could see. All taking turns to spend time with Mr.Lopez who was also in a coma. He had been in a coma for about a month. Mr.Lopez had cancer and it has spread all throughout his body.

By by that evening my father started squeezing our hands and finally opened his eyes. He was awake ; surgery went as plan and my dad was on his way to recovery. Last Friday my mom, sister and myself all went to the hospital as my dad was finally coming home! This was such an exciting moment for my family we were so excited to scoop him up. On our way in we saw about ten members from the Lopez family.  My sister smiled largely at the family and inquired on Mr. Lopez there response was, he’s about the same.  My mother instinctly wrapped her arms around Maria who is Mr.Lopez’s daughter and Maria smiled ear to ear and said I love hugs.  My mom held on to Maria for what felt like fifteen minutes.  Tears were welling up in my eyes 6 days ago we were all complete strangers. We then as a group hugged every single member of the Lopez family and engaged in a lot of promising of prayers and sending healing vibes to Mr.Lopez.  The power of a hug is often under estimated.  It can change someone’s entire day.  In that moment I thought to myself how did we all know this is what we all needed. read more

Goals and Gratitude

Now that 2016 has come to a close and things have slowed down a little. It’s time to reset and charge up for an amazing 2017.  We want to start off by saying whole heartily that we are extremely grateful for your kindness and generosity.  From the AMEX gifts, to the spray painted sunrise photos to the personalized photo books  to the polaroid photos with hand scripted quotes on the back ; we are Thankful.  We know it took a lot of time and dedication to put it all together. #Paulleak plans on using the money to backpack his way through Europe and camp out in a cozy North Face tent. Coach John plans on going to Hawaii with his beautiful wife for 10 whole days and will promise to post photos on his instagram the whole time.  Jeanie is going to buy herself a fresh new fanny pack with a top of the line speaker so she can scoot around gracie mansion with the sweetest tunes bursting out of her hips. So again Tribe we are all extremely Thankful and November Project would not be what it is today if you all did not decide one day to simply #justshowup. read more

Abby Reisner -NYC

I rolled up to the Brooklyn Half with cried-out eyes puffed to the size of inflated queen-sized air mattresses. I’d been dumped by my long-term boyfriend over the phone a few hours before start time, and was feeling less than social. I saw some NP faces around, but I mostly kept my head down. I didn’t want to talk, I wanted to cry: so I ran the race, got on the subway, went home and went to sleep at noon. read more

Remi’s Randal Island Birthday Bash

At 5:15 this morning Paul and I were discussing the strategy for the workout today. We were both a little sleepy , Paul had some drool crusted on his cheek as he got a sold 9 hours (because he lives so close to the workout and got a new “job”). Out of the corner of my eye I see a wide awake pearly white smile carrying what looked like three huge boxes of baked goods. It reminded me when I was kid and my mom would buy hostess cakes cup cakes and shove jelly beans in the center and frost them to make people think she home baked them. She would them load them in the car and park illegally by the dumpster while we carted them into the school.  Sure enough there were home baked scones with hand printed labels on them to distinguish cranberry from chocolate chip. I was shocked mostly at the fact that he brought those baked goods all the way from Marine park Brooklyn. He must of woke up at 4:30 to get to the workout and he looked fresh as a daisy and had a smile that could light up the room. read more
