50 First Dates

530 shredders, big and small

DENVER NOTES:

The following may be considered all the reasons for FOMO/FIMO/FUMO/FAMO/FEMO, or whatever Stacey Cha calls it:

  • Brand spanking new workout, fresh outta the NOLA swamplands, courtesy of Mia Fredricks (look her up, she’s awesome)
    • Run a hill, grab a question from the hat, answer question with partner, run to the other side of the hill, run down, lather, rinse, repeat.
Who wins in a flightless bird bar fight: penguin, chicken, or dodo?  Discuss. Melissa’s building painters saw her naked this morning.  No dates or exchanges of information resulted from this.  She seems fine with that. Perry Wang came to Colorado thinking we have the same weather as SF.  Sucker. Dan Turboletti did not grace us with the #mulletvisor this morning, only musings on sustainable rubber factories. Ryan Nagel’s last meal is a DQ ice cream cake.  All of the ice cream, none of the guilt…because you’re dead? Robyn Mayer listens to Broadway musicals when you’re not around. Alanna’s first NP workout EVER was Summit 5.0.  Holy.  Shit. Speaking of shit, Amy Bell waddled her way to the end of 530.  No one has seen her since.

This was maybe one of the most fun weeks we’ve had at NP5280 for a minute.  #Thecrateescape on Saturday was a huge success, mostly because no one died and it ended in tacos – and we learned a little bit about each other.  Wednesday’s water balloon fight wasn’t so much of a fight as it was being pissed that balloons kept ricocheting off your targets and exploding on the grass.  This morning’s First Date workout was all about working hard and getting to know your tribe just a little bit better. read more

Integrity (DEN)

If you watch Sportsball like our mutual friend, Mike Bell, you’re probably familiar with this meme from this rant.  For those uninitiated – team plays (really) poorly, coach is (really) mad, goes on rant in presser.  Poor Dennis and the Cardinals knew exactly what they were getting into.  The Bears’ D was really good that season and they intercepted Arizona’s QB something like 13 times that night for 6 baskets (still writing as Mike Bell in 3rd person).  In this situation, you might say the Bears had a sense of integrity.  Everyone knew they played great D, then they came out and delivered. read more

Shelter from the Storm (DEN)

Ever one for thoughtful and careful reflection, lady leader of the day, Julia, gives us some wisdom on just what the hell it is we’re actually doing here.  Don’t let the workouts fool you, this is a global family.

There’s nothing I can say about Ben’s passing that isn’t already being said more eloquently by the tribes who knew and loved him. I encourage you to get to know him by reading what has been posted by NP Boston, NP Worcester, and beyond. When I try to put myself into the shoes of his wife, Jenn, I feel like NP would simultaneously be the only and the last place I would want to be without my husband. I hope that she and everyone who loved him can be lifted up by knowing that people from across the world care and are thinking about them. I hope they can feel that tribe members in Denver, who they’ve never met, are holding the family in their hearts. read more

Give and Take (DEN)

AnAlbumCover for 530, please, Alex

We’ve been getting a little deep with our blogs lately, examining the meaning of life, the meaning of NP, how the only difference between a waffle and pancake is the available syrup:batter ratio.  Our resident philosophizer, Uncle Mike Bell, has kept a working mental journal of this thing that is NP.  If you’ve never had the opportunity to sit down with Mike to discuss his thoughts on his experience with NP, I strongly encourage you to do so – bring booze, because shit gets reeeeaaalllly interesting when you add booze.  If you don’t have a chance to sit down with Mike, make it someone else.  Why did you start?  What kept/keeps you coming back?  Let’s dig deeper in 3…2…1… read more

Denver Notes:

  • This morning we witnessed the triumphant exodus of our medical student friends, Jake, General Molly, and Cam from their study caves.  More haggard than before
  • 4 rookies – Gabriel, Ryan, Holly, and Walter tried to figure out exactly what the fuck it is they’d gotten themselves into this morning.
  • Matthew offered to buy Morgan crab legs…for breakfast.  WTF is this, NP-Baltimore?  Unless they eat crab with green chili and inside a burrito, I’m not having it.
  • 1080.  That’s the number of reps you got through if you finished the workout from top to bottom.  In dollars, since it’s tax season, this is also exactly $1080 more than it will cost you for a 12 month membership to NP.  Stick that in your adjusted gross income and smoke it!

Listen, I’m a married man.  I (thankfully) don’t have a need for dating websites or apps anymore.  Honestly, I couldn’t hack it at this point.  Listening to a few of you talk about your dating adventures that began via app or website is enough to induce mild-moderate chest pain.  It makes me anxious. read more

I quit Strava (DEN)

I quit Strava. I feel like that may be going against one of the cardinal rules of runners in the information age. There is the old adage of, “If it’s not on the internet, did it really happen?” When I hear something like that, all I can hear is, “If other people don’t know about it, does it really matter?” read more

DENVER NOTES:

  • We got booted from Union Station…again.
  • The security guard even called up 2 of his doughnut munching buddies so they could stand there grumbling to themselves about millenials (shout out to my Gen-Y crossovers!), while stifling raging jealousy that we were having such a great time on their property.
  • There were birthday hats, birthday doughnuts, birthday songs galore.
  • Cards were flipped and war was waged to see who was doing burpees or pushups.
  • A little team relay with sitting V-trains for spice and a crowd surf to finish.

In the past few months we’ve been fortunate to hear thoughts from a handful of tribe members who’ve been willing to share their stories.  I love these – all of them – and I want more.  While many share a lot of the same general qualities, each has their own little wrinkles that makes it special and pulls us, hips in, just a little bit closer to the author.  In the context of this ever-growing world takeover, it’s easy to #justshowup, give some sweaty hugs, grab your coffee, and head to work for the day.  This is the bare minimum, in my opinion.  We know this movement was founded on #freefitness, but it’s easy to forget that we’re working to build a community – a community whose stories are now so intricately intertwined, that you no longer know where one story ends and the next begins.  Our lives are a function of each others’, and although our stories may be different, they are dependent, to a degree, on those who stand at our left, to our right, and in front or behind us.  As our friends’ stories change, so, too, may our own. read more

Mama Pace Always Said… (DEN)

Even though there was no verbal given from Pace (not Mama Pace), you can think of this as a “We Missed You” written by Mama Pace:

So I come 2000 miles to surprise my amazing daughter at one of her favorite early morning activities, November Project, but alas she was nowhere to be found!  The weather was mild by NE standards.  Are you becoming a lightweight?  Hope you enjoyed your extra rest!  Missed you Kaitlin, but I had a great workout with your NP5280 family. Thank you all for welcoming me to my 3rd Denver workout. read more

Kleenex, Please (DEN)

“Where do you find these things?” Courie texted back this morning after I sent her yet another dank meme.

Reddit, of course. Same place I find cat gifs (exhibit one: http://i.imgur.com/tCVqM8O.gifv).

But somewhere nestled between the Kitty Olympics and photos of Mr. Steal yo’ Gurl (exhibit two: http://i.imgur.com/GtTIpBH.jpg), I’ll occasionally stumble upon profound commentary. Below is one of those Reddit passages concerning grief and loss. read more

All-Out-Takeover Kindness by Eric Einstein (DEN)

My first day working out with November Project, Woody told us we had homework.

Homework? On my first day?

Our assignment: 5 acts of kindness. Not just any kindness, but 5 acts of all-out-takeover kindness.

For me, the past year has been all about this. The all-out-takeover of kindness of NP.

You might know my dog Kiwi. I’m Eric Einstein. read more
