A Follow-Up…already (YEG)

Ok, it’s only been a couple of days but I am already checking in. How are you doing with choosing that feeling for 2019? Already chosen? How are you doing with making choices that align with wanting to feel that way?

I’m asking already because if you haven’t yet decided how you want to feel/continue to feel for the year/month/week/day, you may already be missing opportunities to do so. You see, there’s something about setting an intention, declaring an attitude, choosing a lens you want to view things from, that shifts the way we move through our daily routines. Deciding how you want to feel will allow you to set goals to help you achieve that feeling. Also, it may allow you to see opportunities that you might have overlooked before. And maybe, even more so, it can shift your mindset.

Sometimes there are some things that we have to do, like heading back to work after Christmas break, (Ok, I guess you can choose not to but there are drawbacks to that decision for most of us). Knowing that I want to focus on doing things that bring me joy and health, I look for what will bring me joy as I head back to work Monday. Instead of focusing on how busy it will be, on the longer days, the meal prep that will have to happen, I am looking forward to how nice it will be to see everyone and hear about their break, to greeting students at the door and seeing their smiles back, to getting back into a routine (yes, routine brings me joy and health 😉).

Deciding a feeling for 2019 isn’t all that different from thinking about your choice to show up to November Project. Like me, I am sure you have had conversations with people who have a difficult time understanding why one would get up so early to run/workout in the cold/dark/rain/snow/wind. That’s the lens they see November Project through. Your reply likely includes words like community, hugs, high fives, smiles, and fitness. It comes down to your mindset. Of course, it can be challenging to set your alarm for 5 AM, put on multiple layers of clothing and run up and down a hill but when you’re focussed on the positives that come with getting past those challenges, it makes all the difference in the world. You’re choosing to feel connected, happy, healthy, or whatever other reason brings you to NP.

When you declare how you want to feel to yourself and, if you choose, to others, you’ll likely be able to see the feeling in other areas of your life as well. And if you can’t find that feeling in what you are doing, it might be important to reflect on why you’re doing it. Just some food for thought 😉
